The film charts the story of the tour’s massive success, the backlash that emerged, and its ongoing legacy. Penelope Spheeris’ 1972 UCLA thesis film features Jennifer Michaels and Dana Reuben in Warholian docufiction. Fascinated by society’s degenerates, Spheeris employs loosely scripted reenactment as critique. Turning tricks, seducing trade and performing gender, Michaels and Reuben mock straight culture from its fringes. Michaels, an iconic trans actress who worked with Pat Rocco on *Sex and the Single Gay* (1970) and starred in *Changes* (1970), lends a particularly notable performance. The film was preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2012.—*Wilde Davis*

*A Little Stiff* doesn’t end where it begins so much as it ends where it’s conceived. In this precursor to Caveh Zahedi’s later autobiographical present-tense documentaries, the cast play themselves as they reenact roughly the same unrequited infatuation between Zahedi and McKim that led to the film’s own production. As Zahedi wanders around UCLA’s Arts building, feeds peanuts to squirrels with his friend Greg Watkins, and plunges himself further into a state of longing, we observe the mundanities and ecstatic moments of Zahedi’s spiral through intensely naturalistic performances. Shot on a shoestring budget, *A Little Stiff* feels like a mumblecore *The* *Sorrows of Young Werther.—Noah Brockman*

On April 24, 2002, filmmaker Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine’s car broke down in the small town of Mbirizi, Uganda. While waiting for it to be repaired he stumbled upon a small photo studio and met photographer Kibaate Aloysius Ssalongo, whose work spanned from the late 1950s to his death in 2006. This chance encounter turned into a 22-year journey documenting and exploring Kibaate’s life and photography and the profound impact it had on Ntare’s life and the lives of the entire community he documented. Executive produced by Steven Soderbergh, this intimate, nuanced documentary about the transformative power of photography was named best documentary at the Africa International Film Festival and won the Audience Award at the Pan African Film Festival.

Ethereal, superimposed images unfold across Haitian landscapes, which, despite the ambient heat, appear to be bathed in a cold light. The funeral march emerges as a distant voice, a ballad, and a song from beyond the grave that combines nature, the sea, love and life after death.

Bridgeport, 2008. A teenage girl is found hanged in her room. While everything points to suicide, the autopsy report reveals something else. Ten years later, the director and cousin of the teenager examines the past causes and future consequences of this unsolved crime. Like an imagined biography, the film explores the relationship between the security of the living space and the violence that can jeopardise it.

*“I created a short version of CETTE MAISON for the Palais de Tokyo, primarily focused on sound. I reworked the soundtrack and created a different sonic journey. In the feature-length version of the film, the sound begins with wind from the village where my cousin’s mother was born, and it ends with the same wind sounds (even if it is very subtle, since the scene was shot in a studio). For me, it was a return to the mother’s and daughter’s home. An impossible return. In the short version, with the sound, we begin in the same village in Haiti where my aunt was born, and we end in the neighborhood where my cousin passed away. A luncheon on the grass among the tombs. While the living are living, the voices of the dead are floating in the air. When lunch-time comes, the “Cimetière des Rois” (“Cemetery of Kings”), downtown Geneva, fills up with residents, workers, employees, students of the neighborhood. People come alone, in pairs, with friends or colleagues, to have a snack on the grass or to take a break on a bench. The living and the dead share a same space-time. Mixing contemporary Super 8 footage of people in the cemetery and sound archives of personalities buried there, “Noon in the Cemetery” is a short essay film, a kind of experimental documentary. If it was a painting, it could be a Vanitas, “a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death.”

The original Ghostface Killer is on the loose!  A vicious villain with an unstoppable five element technique, Ghostface is killing off all his old rivals. Meanwhile, a young student tries to learn kung fu and is taken under the wing of an old chess master. The basics of chess prove to be the same as the basics of fighting, and eventually the heroes will have to fight Ghostface Killer, who verbally insults his opponents as he annihilates them. Gordon Matta-Clark, the artist, urban explorer, and “anarchitect” most famous for the “building cuts” he performed on various decomposing structures in the 1970s, made 18 short films before his untimely death from cancer in 1978. Aside from walking through the buildings themselves, which have all since been demolished, film provides the ideal venue in which to experience Matta-Clark’s singular artistry. The power of the cut to create strange new juxtapositions, the epistemological faculty of an opening that introduces light to new planes — metaphorical connections between Matta-Clark’s work and the cinematic apparatus abound. This program collects six of his films shot between 1972 and 1976, documenting four building cuts, one formal experiment, and one car crash. In all of his work, Matta-Clark sought to expose the thinness of the boundaries that divide people, mediums, spaces, and ideas. With sledgehammer, chainsaw, and his own two feet, he punched through these walls with an urgency that has been increasingly felt in the decades since his passing, cutting new holes for light to pour in.

Premiering in 1990, *In Living Color* exploded onto the Fox Television Network, reinvigorating the sketch comedy genre by showcasing a multiracial ensemble unafraid of controversy. Created by trailblazing multi-hyphenate Keenen Ivory Wayans, the innovative series turned primetime into a cultural battlefield, uproariously harnessing satire and spectacle to explore issues of race, class and celebrity. In his book, *The Black Pack: Comedy, Race, and Resistance*, author Artel Great situates *In Living Color *within the broader lineage of Black sketch comedy, illuminating how the innovative series served as an industrial weapon, seizing time, space and cultural power, often forcing America to laugh at what it preferred to ignore. In the process, the hit series won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series in 1990.

Helping to launch a breakout cast of highly gifted comedians that included David Alan Grier, Daymon Wayans, Kim Wayans, Tommy Davison, Jamie Foxx and Jim Carrey, *In Living Color *introduced a lasting lexicon of original characters and catchphrases to pop culture, from Homey D. Clown (“Homey, don’t play that”) to Men on Film (“two snaps up”) that continue to resonate long after the series' final broadcast on Fox in 1994.

Over the course of the project’s ill-fated conception, documentary director Howard Brookner follows Wilson, composers Philip Glass and David Byrne, and several production troupes as they seek to perfect an epic that encompasses the American Civil War, the life and death of Frederick the Great, and the unification of Italy, along with imagery from Frank L. Throughout history, similar scenes repeat themselves in railway carriages: soldiers departing for war and returning wounded—or not at all—followed by waves of civilians, evacuees, prisoners of war, and the aftermath of conflict. Eventually, these moments give way once again to ordinary travel, until the cycle repeats.

*“THE JOURNEY was born directly out of a collapsed project in 1982, when I tried to organize another antinuclear war film, to be funded by Central TV in England, and working with a number of peace groups across the UK. I felt that THE WAR GAME was out-of-date, and I was concerned about the escalating nuclear arms race, that was allied to the US foreign policy of a nuclear war that would be limited to Europe. My idea was to create a series of scenes, again depicting the consequences of a nuclear attack on Britain, on a larger scale than THE WAR GAME, that would allow citizens across Britain to express their concerns via their involvement in the production of this project. However, Central TV withdrew its funding, on the grounds that the budget was becoming too large, and the project collapsed. After rethinking the scale of the project into a more global film dealing with the general silence on the burgeoning nuclear arms race, I appealed for funding to a number of international TV channels. Without exception, every TV channel that I contacted refused, even though I was only requesting support for filming an ultra low-cost segment in each country, where I would ask local people what they knew and felt about the world arms race. *

*“During the time while I had no funding from the professional sector, I happened to be showing THE WAR GAME to the world’s oldest peace movement association, the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (SPAS), in Stockholm. In May 1983, during its 100th anniversary congress, SPAS unanimously decided to support fund-raising for a new film about the nuclear threat. Entrenched in the devastating reality of postwar Japan, Naruse’s masterpiece adapts Fumiko Hayashi’s final completed novel to trace the lives of two repatriated lovers reunited in the ruins of a defeated nation. The wartime affair of Tomioka, a married Forestry Ministry officer (Masayuki Mori) and typist Yukiko (Hideko Takamine) continues in the postwar rubble, but their bleak existence pales against the faraway romance that took place in French Indochina. Reluctant to leave his wife, the lecherous Tomioka comes and goes at his leisure to visit Yukiko, who clings to him desperately, propping up the vestiges of their long-lost passion over the course of years. Takamine’s heartbreaking performance is perhaps her finest hour, a role of sheer emotional magnitude that bears an agonizing love, drawn from the fading memory of what once was.

Chantal Akerman somewhat disowned this unfinished film, in which the beautiful, lithe Claire Wauthion plays the mother of a sweet young girl, Daphné, with whom she reads Babar, prepares lunch and tries on dresses. Privately, with Akerman as a kind of mute but receptive presence, Wauthion confides her own sense of jealousy and disappointment toward her husband (“He really is such a baby”) and casts a critical eye on her body, citing a litany of physical shortcomings in a nearly five-minute single take that Akerman would repurpose for her 2007 video installation “In the Mirror.”
