Devonté has also directed work for Beck and Mykki Blanco, and composed the scores for films like Palo Alto, Queen & Slim, Passing, Mainstream, Master Gardener, and the upcoming The Invite. Join us for a program of music videos selected by Devonté Hynes, alongside a career-spanning discussion about the relationship between music and moving images.

The Directors Series is a celebration of the artistry of music videos and those who make them. As the music video continues to change and mutate in unknowable directions, we want to take stock of the directors and art we love, presenting hand-picked collections of videos in a format rare to the music video: theatrically, with a live audience, and with the filmmakers on hand to discuss their work.

Robert Townsend pens a soulful love letter to Black popular music in this film loosely inspired by Motown-era vocal groups. It follows a fictional quintet from 1960s chart success through industry exploitation, infighting and addiction.

Here Eddie Murphy stands at the center of the Black Pack as Prince Akeem, heir to the throne of Zamunda, who leaves royal luxury for Queens, New York, in search of love on his own terms. The most commercially successful Black comedy feature of its era, this blockbuster is also a case study in power and authorship, as Murphy gives a tour de force performance of multiple characters and earns a “story by” credit. I DON’T HATE LAS VEGAS ANYMORE is a real-life documentary comedy about a filmmaker who takes a road trip to Las Vegas with his father and half-brother in an attempt to prove the existence of God. He posits that if God exists, and if God is indeed omniscient, omnipotent and omnibenevolent, then all the filmmaker has to do is roll the camera and let God direct the movie. But the movie isn’t going in the direction the filmmaker would like, and so the filmmaker attempts to force God’s hand by trying to persuade his father and half-brother to take Ecstasy with him. When they refuse, things quickly start to unravel.

*“THE JOURNEY was born directly out of a collapsed project in 1982, when I tried to organize another antinuclear war film, to be funded by Central TV in England, and working with a number of peace groups across the UK. I felt that THE WAR GAME was out-of-date, and I was concerned about the escalating nuclear arms race, that was allied to the US foreign policy of a nuclear war that would be limited to Europe. My idea was to create a series of scenes, again depicting the consequences of a nuclear attack on Britain, on a larger scale than THE WAR GAME, that would allow citizens across Britain to express their concerns via their involvement in the production of this project. However, Central TV withdrew its funding, on the grounds that the budget was becoming too large, and the project collapsed. After rethinking the scale of the project into a more global film dealing with the general silence on the burgeoning nuclear arms race, I appealed for funding to a number of international TV channels. Without exception, every TV channel that I contacted refused, even though I was only requesting support for filming an ultra low-cost segment in each country, where I would ask local people what they knew and felt about the world arms race. *

*“During the time while I had no funding from the professional sector, I happened to be showing THE WAR GAME to the world’s oldest peace movement association, the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (SPAS), in Stockholm. In May 1983, during its 100th anniversary congress, SPAS unanimously decided to support fund-raising for a new film about the nuclear threat. Based in Stockholm, and with initial funding from SPAS, I immediately began to involve the network of friends and acquaintances that I had acquired over many years of travelling and lecturing, to build an international fund-raising drive for the new film, and to start research in those parts of the world where I would organize local productions groups for the actual filming.*

*“The film’s core concept started to emerge: I would visit families or groups of people in various countries, and interview them to find out what they knew about the state and consequences of the world arms race, and the effects of nuclear weapons. The interviews would also focus on the role that mass media and educational systems played in shaping a world view, and on the knowledge that these people had – or did not have – vis-à-vis these subjects.” – Peter Watkins*

Entrenched in the devastating reality of postwar Japan, Naruse’s masterpiece adapts Fumiko Hayashi’s final completed novel to trace the lives of two repatriated lovers reunited in the ruins of a defeated nation. The wartime affair of Tomioka, a married Forestry Ministry officer (Masayuki Mori) and typist Yukiko (Hideko Takamine) continues in the postwar rubble, but their bleak existence pales against the faraway romance that took place in French Indochina. Reluctant to leave his wife, the lecherous Tomioka comes and goes at his leisure to visit Yukiko, who clings to him desperately, propping up the vestiges of their long-lost passion over the course of years. Takamine’s heartbreaking performance is perhaps her finest hour, a role of sheer emotional magnitude that bears an agonizing love, drawn from the fading memory of what once was.

Chantal Akerman somewhat disowned this unfinished film, in which the beautiful, lithe Claire Wauthion plays the mother of a sweet young girl, Daphné, with whom she reads Babar, prepares lunch and tries on dresses. Privately, with Akerman as a kind of mute but receptive presence, Wauthion confides her own sense of jealousy and disappointment toward her husband (“He really is such a baby”) and casts a critical eye on her body, citing a litany of physical shortcomings in a nearly five-minute single take that Akerman would repurpose for her 2007 video installation “In the Mirror.”

Six men set out on the Aegean Sea aboard a yacht, and before long, male bonding and one-upmanship give way to a loosely defined yet hotly contested competition to determine which of them is “the best in general.” As the games and trials grow more elaborate and absurd—everything is up for judgment, from sleeping positions to cholesterol levels to furniture-assembly skills—insecurities emerge and power relations shift. As in her breakthrough ATTENBERG, Athina Rachel Tsangari balances anthropological precision with a wry and wholly original sense of humor. Impeccably staged, crisply photographed and buoyed by eclectic soundtrack choices (Petula Clark, Mark Lanegan), this maritime psychodrama becomes both funnier and richer in its implications as it progresses. We&#8217;re cranking up the Elmo 16CL projector for another round of obscure 16mm rarities, this time all from the late 1940s through the early 1960s with a slate of social engineering films designed to create model citizens and healthy adults. From strangers with candy to high school dropouts, to puberty&#8217;s pitfalls and civic responsibility, these largely forgotten gems are laughably out-of-date and teeming with an antiquated morality you can only find in yesteryear. Films include ***The Dangerous Stranger*** (1949) the stranger danger film that started it all from the king of the scare film Sid Davis, ***The Dropout** *(1962) for the ne&#8217;er-do-wells, ***Molly Grows Up*** (1953) menstrutainment at its finest, ***The Meaning of Adolescence*** (1953) to guide you through those awkward years, ***Responsibility*** (1953) from Herk Harvey &#8211; the director of *Carnival of Souls*, and the incredibly rare NFBC global responsibility primer ***Our Town is the World***  (1950s, Canada), plus more celluloid rarities and a surprise pre-show for the early birds! Everything screened on 16mm film.

Sweet 16mm: Mid-Century Social Guidance Classics

Join us for a screening of *Of Color and Ink*, a documentary about the remarkable journey of artist Chang Dai-chien (1899–1983), China’s foremost painter of the 20th century. Director Weimin Zhang documents her 12-year journey to unravel the mysteries and controversies surrounding Chang’s decades of exile in South America, Europe, and the United States. In the 1940s, Chang spent a formative period in Dunhuang, studying and copying the ancient Mogao Cave murals— [the subject of a 2016 Getty Research Institute exhibition][1]—which inspired renewed public interest in the murals and refined Chang’s techniques. *Of Color and Ink* offers an illuminating, revelatory, and entertaining exploration of one of the most influential giants of 20th-century art.

The film will be followed by a conversation with director and producer Weimin Zhang, writer Carl Nagin, director of the Chang Dai-chien Research Center Yudan Zhang, and USC professor Meiling Cheng.

After the screening, join us for a reception sponsored by the Getty Research Institute Council.

導演張偉民歷時十二年，影片深入挖掘大量珍貴的歷史活動影像與文獻資料，真實呈現張大千鮮為人知的海外藝術生涯， 極具文獻價值。20世紀40年代，張大千曾在敦煌度過一段重要時期，潛心研究並臨摹莫高窟壁畫——這一主題亦成為2016年蓋蒂研究所展覽的焦點——不僅重新激發了世人對敦煌壁畫的關注，也進一步錘鍊並昇華了他的藝術技法。

透過創新的影像語言與視覺風格，《萬里千尋》通過對歷史影像的深入挖掘與分析，以及大量實地調研與紀錄拍攝，生動刻畫了一位東方藝術家對中國傳統文化理念的堅守與傳播，使當代觀眾得以感受這位具有全球影響力的藝術家的心路歷程。

On occasion of the release of her new book, *How It Feels to Be Alive*, we are thrilled to have celebrated art critic and essayist Megan O’Grady in person to present Agnès Varda’s masterpiece, starring Sandrine Bonnaire as a young female hitchhiker wandering aimlessly through the unearthly winter landscape of southern France.

**Megan O’Grady** is a critic and essayist whose writing draws from history, memoir, and the lyric essay. Her magazine and newspaper journalism on contemporary art and literature are often extensions of larger inquiries into representation and identity, explored through immersive reading and looking. The personal and social contexts of art and the way in which it negotiates cultural conversations over time are ongoing preoccupations. A frequent contributor to The New York Times, where she created the Culture Therapist column, her work also appears in The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, and Vogue, where she was once a contributing editor. Her book, How It Feels to Be Alive: Encounters with Art and Our Selves (Farrar, Straus & Giroux) considers the influence of books and art on our attention and imagination, their rippling impact on our self-conception and the way we move in the world.

**Carolina A. Miranda** is a writer in Los Angeles who covers the intersection of design and visual culture with politics and society. Until 2024, she was a columnist at the Los Angeles Times, where she reported on subjects such as museums and race, architecture and the pandemic, and the ways in which communities are rethinking the nature of monuments. She has produced stories for the Atlantic, the New York Review of Books, Artnews, Alta Journal and Fresh Air, and is a regular contributor for public radio station KCRW. She was a winner of the 2017 Rabkin Prize in Visual Arts Journalism and a recipient of the 2024 Andy Warhol Foundation Art Writers Grant. She is currently at work on a book about culture and authoritarianism in Chile.

Join us for a special Earth Day celebration featuring ecological artist and herbalist Paige Emery, which will include a talk and brunch inspired by historical cookbooks from the Getty Library collection.

While visitors enjoy select recipes, Paige will be joined in conversation with Melissa Goldstein—founder and editor of *Mother Tongue* magazine—to explore rituals of remembering the earth. Together, they will reflect on how art, healing practices, and ecological thought can reconnect us to ancestral memory and inspire more just and embodied futures. 

Following the talk, Emery will perform a sound piece in the Getty Central Garden, weaving together the healing arts and critical ecology, ecopoetics and socio-environmental practice, inviting us to imagine deeper relationships with the natural world.

This event is part of the Getty Research Institute’s [*Tastemakers*][1] series, featuring communal gatherings inspired by cookbooks from the Getty Library.

This is a hands class on with sharp tools and Sharpies and is intended for beginners 14 years and older. Leave the class with a new appreciation for leather and take home a small finished pouch and a pattern to make more if you fall in love with the craft!

Alexandre Estrela: *RedSkyFalls *is an installation that responds in real time to Earth’s internal rumblings – an artificial ecosystem with pre-digital sensibility. In *RedSkyFalls*, the mountainous landscape of a computer desktop serves as a habitat for aquatic plants and small luminous organisms with an animal intuition, the *Réplicas*, nestled inside the grooves of aluminium plates. Alexandre Estrela: *RedSkyFalls *is on view at the Portugal Pavilion of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia from **May 9 to November 22**, and is curated by Ana Baliza and Ricardo Nicolau.

Built from a calibrated mix of animal parts drawn from a dark cauldron, each *Réplica* borrows its vital pulse from the beat of a heart in a fly’s leg, the wave of a fish larva’s tail, and the quiver of a rat’s whisker. This patchwork of movement engraves onto the metal plate a linear fossil, a path where light generates a figure that continuously fulfills its hollow-graphic fate.

From **May 9-July 5,** REDCAT hosts a reproduction of one of the *Réplicas* of *RedSkyFalls*. In Los Angeles, as in Venice, the piece reacts to live seismic activity worldwide. Other *Réplicas* will be installed in San Francisco, California (CCA Wattis Institute); Lima, Peru (Museo de Arte de Lima, MALI); and Lisbon, Portugal (Galeria Zé dos Bois). The piece is installed in highly seismic geographies, where it responds to tectonic events with higher synchronicity, building an extended relational infrastructure.
