Meanwhile, the marriage between the son, Shuichi, and his wife, Kikuko, begins to disintegrate. One night, Žilnik picks up a group of homeless men from the streets of Novi Sad and takes them home. While they enjoy themselves in his home, the filmmaker tries to “solve the problem of the homeless” carrying along a film camera as a witness. He speaks to social workers, ordinary people. He even addresses policemen. They all close their eyes in front of the “problem.”

In an allegoric manner, EARLY WORKS recounts a story of young people who took part in student demonstrations in June 1968 in Belgrade. Three young men and a girl, Yugoslava, defy the petit-bourgeois routine of everyday life. Wishing to “change the world,” inspired by the writings of young Karl Marx, they go to the country and to factories to “wake up people’s consciousness,” to encourage them in their fight for emancipation and life worth living. Being in field they face primitivism and squalor, but they show their own limits, weaknesses, incapacity and jealousy. They get arrested. Frustrated because the planned revolution has not been realized, the three young men decide to eliminate Yugoslava, who is the witness of their impotence. They shoot her, cover her with the party flag, burn her body and a dark pillar of smoke going up into the sky is the only thing that remains of the intended revolution.

Merlyn has been pacifying the Balkans, turning tricks with countless Serbian guys. Merlyn is a lighting rod sheltering Belgrade, calming violent nighthawks, swanky big spenders, miserable loners and horny young studs, taking on the charge that would otherwise befall little girls, unprotected mothers and helpless old women. Combined with guns, this unbridled energy would eventually lead to bloodshed. Merlyn cools the boiling blood of violent Dinarides and enriches it with love. Johnny comes home to Belgrade, from the war. His motives are apparently similar, he also wants to cool the boiling blood, but he does it by letting it through the holes in the human body, which he makes with bullets or knives. This film is a treatise on the different methods of resolving conflicts, resorted to by Merlyn and Johnny.

For the first time since its creation in 1979, *For Whose Entertainment *by renowned filmmaker, artist, and educator Ben Caldwell has its first public screening.

The film is a critique of Black comedians and their work, in which Caldwell asks who Black comedians are trying to appeal to and entertain most: Black audiences or white audiences? Through the use of appropriated footage and collage, the filmmaker deconstructs Blackness in entertainment in the 1960s and 1970s. *For Whose Entertainment* brings together important figures in Black film and scholarship, including documentary filmmaker St. Clair Bourne and cinema scholar Teshome Gabriel, to discuss issues around Black representation in film and television. Caldwell’s film oeuvre and life’s work is built around psychic healing for Black people, a self-mandate formed after serving as a soldier in the Vietnam War.

There will be a post-screening conversation with Ben Caldwell, film programmer Jheanelle Brown, and scholar and multimedia/film producer Robeson Taj Frazier.

*Jack Smith (1932–1989) was a New York-based filmmaker, photographer, and actor known for his pioneering influence in experimental filmmaking and performance art. Smith moved to New York City in 1953, where he attended film classes at the City College of New York, finding employment as a photographer. He studied dance with Ruth St. Denis, direction with Lee Strasberg, and worked as an actor and assistant with Ken Jacobs before shooting his first film, Scotch Tape, in 1959. His best-known film, Flaming Creatures (1963), was confiscated by the New York Police Department and banned throughout the United States due to nudity and charges of obscenity. Smith never again created a finished artwork. His next film, Normal Love (1963), was often re-spliced as it ran, repeatedly reedited, and regularly awarded new titles such as Normal Fantasy, Exotic Landlordism of Crab Lagoon, and The Great Pasty Triumph. From the late 1960s into the 1980s, Smith focused on theater and performance, and combined live happenings with screenings of films and slideshows. Throughout his life, Smith pioneered a radical artistic practice that challenged the economic conditions of late capitalism, fixed definitions of gender and sexuality, and the production and dissemination of art itself. Smith’s influence pervades experimental filmmaking and performance art in the US to this day, and is present in the works of Andy Warhol, John Waters, Laurie Anderson, and Cindy Sherman, among countless others. Flight of the Navigator

Join us in the microcinema for a local piece of musical history. This homegrown concert film directed by **Charlie Weinmann** documents the August 20, 2025 performance by guitarist/bandleader **Jeff Parker** and his **ETA IVtet** (with drummer **Jay Bellerose**, bassist **Anna Butterss**, and saxophonist **Josh Johnson**) at Highland Park, Los Angeles venue **Lodge Room**, which yielded the band&#8217;s forthcoming album ***Happy Today*** (to be released by **International Anthem** and **Nonesuch Records** on May 15, 2026).
*Happy Today* is the ETA IVtet’s first recording made outside of the now-shuttered, widely-beloved Highland Park, Los Angeles micro-club ETA. Part laboratory, part low-stakes proving ground, ETA was where the band’s collective sound coalesced over the course of a storied seven-year Monday night residency that yielded two critically-acclaimed records — 2022’s *Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy* and 2024’s *The Way Out of Easy* — the latter of which debuted #1 on the *Billboard* Contemporary Jazz Charts, and was called &#8220;a testament to the power of live jazz&#8221; by *The Guardian*.

With *Happy Today*, the ETA IVtet&#8217;s sound — honed in such an intimate setting — is scaled up for a much larger audience and space at Lodge Room. But the essential formula of the music remains the same, and has the same hypnotic, deeply-tuned listening effect. The almost alchemical musical communication between Parker, Bellerose, Butterss, and Johnson creates a feeling of connection not only between the band but also between the band and their audience – an ongoing trust exercise that invites listeners to become part of the exchange, and experience the joy of deep listening.

A shadow-laden, almost noirish capture of the band in its full sprawling glory, Weinmann’s *Happy Today* film makes the joyful experience of Parker&#8217;s now-legendary, ever-elusive ETA IVtet – a band who only ever played at a single small Los Angeles venue for the first seven years of their existence, and have only played a few shows since that venue closed at the end of 2023 – viewable and widely-accessible for the first time.

From strangers with candy to high school dropouts, to puberty&#8217;s pitfalls and civic responsibility, these largely forgotten gems are laughably out-of-date and teeming with an antiquated morality you can only find in yesteryear. Sweet 16mm: Mid-Century Social Guidance Classics

Join us for a screening of *Of Color and Ink*, a documentary about the remarkable journey of artist Chang Dai-chien (1899–1983), China’s foremost painter of the 20th century. Director Weimin Zhang documents her 12-year journey to unravel the mysteries and controversies surrounding Chang’s decades of exile in South America, Europe, and the United States. In the 1940s, Chang spent a formative period in Dunhuang, studying and copying the ancient Mogao Cave murals— [the subject of a 2016 Getty Research Institute exhibition][1]—which inspired renewed public interest in the murals and refined Chang’s techniques. *Of Color and Ink* offers an illuminating, revelatory, and entertaining exploration of one of the most influential giants of 20th-century art.

The film will be followed by a conversation with director and producer Weimin Zhang, writer Carl Nagin, director of the Chang Dai-chien Research Center Yudan Zhang, and USC professor Meiling Cheng.

*“THE JOURNEY was born directly out of a collapsed project in 1982, when I tried to organize another antinuclear war film, to be funded by Central TV in England, and working with a number of peace groups across the UK. I felt that THE WAR GAME was out-of-date, and I was concerned about the escalating nuclear arms race, that was allied to the US foreign policy of a nuclear war that would be limited to Europe. My idea was to create a series of scenes, again depicting the consequences of a nuclear attack on Britain, on a larger scale than THE WAR GAME, that would allow citizens across Britain to express their concerns via their involvement in the production of this project. However, Central TV withdrew its funding, on the grounds that the budget was becoming too large, and the project collapsed. After rethinking the scale of the project into a more global film dealing with the general silence on the burgeoning nuclear arms race, I appealed for funding to a number of international TV channels. Without exception, every TV channel that I contacted refused, even though I was only requesting support for filming an ultra low-cost segment in each country, where I would ask local people what they knew and felt about the world arms race. *

*“During the time while I had no funding from the professional sector, I happened to be showing THE WAR GAME to the world’s oldest peace movement association, the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (SPAS), in Stockholm. In May 1983, during its 100th anniversary congress, SPAS unanimously decided to support fund-raising for a new film about the nuclear threat. Based in Stockholm, and with initial funding from SPAS, I immediately began to involve the network of friends and acquaintances that I had acquired over many years of travelling and lecturing, to build an international fund-raising drive for the new film, and to start research in those parts of the world where I would organize local productions groups for the actual filming.*

On occasion of the release of her new book, *How It Feels to Be Alive*, we are thrilled to have celebrated art critic and essayist Megan O’Grady in person to present Agnès Varda’s masterpiece, starring Sandrine Bonnaire as a young female hitchhiker wandering aimlessly through the unearthly winter landscape of southern France.

**Megan O’Grady** is a critic and essayist whose writing draws from history, memoir, and the lyric essay. Her magazine and newspaper journalism on contemporary art and literature are often extensions of larger inquiries into representation and identity, explored through immersive reading and looking. The personal and social contexts of art and the way in which it negotiates cultural conversations over time are ongoing preoccupations. A frequent contributor to The New York Times, where she created the Culture Therapist column, her work also appears in The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, and Vogue, where she was once a contributing editor. Her book, How It Feels to Be Alive: Encounters with Art and Our Selves (Farrar, Straus & Giroux) considers the influence of books and art on our attention and imagination, their rippling impact on our self-conception and the way we move in the world.

**Carolina A. Miranda** is a writer in Los Angeles who covers the intersection of design and visual culture with politics and society. Until 2024, she was a columnist at the Los Angeles Times, where she reported on subjects such as museums and race, architecture and the pandemic, and the ways in which communities are rethinking the nature of monuments. She has produced stories for the Atlantic, the New York Review of Books, Artnews, Alta Journal and Fresh Air, and is a regular contributor for public radio station KCRW. She was a winner of the 2017 Rabkin Prize in Visual Arts Journalism and a recipient of the 2024 Andy Warhol Foundation Art Writers Grant. She is currently at work on a book about culture and authoritarianism in Chile.

Freedom is never free, no matter how stunning the scenery.  In this meditative feminist highway tale by unsung Swiss auteur Alain Tanner, an intense friendship quickly forms between two young vagabonds: Jeanne from the big city and Marie from the countryside.  Their impulsive hitch-hiking day trip morphs into an endless cyclical wandering from village to village, from roadway to mountain trail as the pair evade predatory men, the despair of hunger and the long banal arm of the law.  This is THELMA & LOUISE for the Alps, with fantastic long takes and two perfect performances from Clémentine Amouroux and Catherine Rétoré.

Join us for a special Earth Day celebration featuring ecological artist and herbalist Paige Emery, which will include a talk and brunch inspired by historical cookbooks from the Getty Library collection.

While visitors enjoy select recipes, Paige will be joined in conversation with Melissa Goldstein—founder and editor of *Mother Tongue* magazine—to explore rituals of remembering the earth. Together, they will reflect on how art, healing practices, and ecological thought can reconnect us to ancestral memory and inspire more just and embodied futures. 

Following the talk, Emery will perform a sound piece in the Getty Central Garden, weaving together the healing arts and critical ecology, ecopoetics and socio-environmental practice, inviting us to imagine deeper relationships with the natural world.

Alexandre Estrela: *RedSkyFalls *is an installation that responds in real time to Earth’s internal rumblings – an artificial ecosystem with pre-digital sensibility. In *RedSkyFalls*, the mountainous landscape of a computer desktop serves as a habitat for aquatic plants and small luminous organisms with an animal intuition, the *Réplicas*, nestled inside the grooves of aluminium plates. Alexandre Estrela: *RedSkyFalls *is on view at the Portugal Pavilion of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia from **May 9 to November 22**, and is curated by Ana Baliza and Ricardo Nicolau.

Built from a calibrated mix of animal parts drawn from a dark cauldron, each *Réplica* borrows its vital pulse from the beat of a heart in a fly’s leg, the wave of a fish larva’s tail, and the quiver of a rat’s whisker. This patchwork of movement engraves onto the metal plate a linear fossil, a path where light generates a figure that continuously fulfills its hollow-graphic fate.

From **May 9-July 5,** REDCAT hosts a reproduction of one of the *Réplicas* of *RedSkyFalls*. In Los Angeles, as in Venice, the piece reacts to live seismic activity worldwide. Other *Réplicas* will be installed in San Francisco, California (CCA Wattis Institute); Lima, Peru (Museo de Arte de Lima, MALI); and Lisbon, Portugal (Galeria Zé dos Bois). The piece is installed in highly seismic geographies, where it responds to tectonic events with higher synchronicity, building an extended relational infrastructure.

Based on a children’s essay adapted by famed Japanese screenwriter Yoko Mizuki in her first work for Naruse, Mother stars the legendary actress-director Kinuyo Tanaka as a beleaguered working class matron, whose self-sacrificing efforts to maintain her family during Tokyo’s postwar reconstruction make her a paragon of maternal virtue in the eyes of her teenage daughter Toshiko (Kyoko Kagawa). Toshiko idealizes her mother and the value system she embodies, a naive perspective that pleasantly lifts what in fact unfurls as a bitterly sad, episodic tale of slow-burn economic emmiseration. Anticipating the films of Hou Hsiao-hsien in its ironically sentimental vision of Confucian dissolution, Naruse’s film is a melodramatic tearjerker for the ages.

Hollywood Entertainment is proud to present the LA premiere of Doris Wishman’s final movie: *Dildo Heaven*, unreleased and unseen since its festival debut in 2002. This special Mother’s Day tribute will feature a conversation with filmmakers and former Wishman crew members Rodney Ascher and Syd Garon and Elizabeth Pauker, director of the forthcoming documentary *AKA Doris Wishman*. The feature will be preceded by Ascher’s 2020 short film *Doris Wishman Directs A Music Video*.

Octogenarian filmmaker and “Queen of Sexploitation” Doris Wishman was working at a sex shop in Miami in the early 90s when she met experimental musician Tom Smith (To Live and Shave in L.A.), spurring a full-blown career revival that saw her honored at film festivals around the world and featured on HBO’s *Real Sex* and *Late Night with Conan O’Brien*. Intended to be her comeback movie, Dildo Heaven premiered at the New York Underground Film Festival just months before her passing in 2002 and then was never officially widely released until now. A charming shot-on-video sex comedy that defies all description–and surely the only movie by a senior citizen to feature an original rap theme song–*Dildo Heaven* (also known as *Desperate Desires*) is a fitting swan song for one of the most beloved cult filmmakers of all time.
