In conjunction with The Broad’s exhibition *Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind*, Filmforum presents some films of hers not included in the exhibition, along with a few others that are.

The films of Yoko Ono demand that one slows down to view them. They might be humorous or rarified, reserved or unruly, precise or uncontrolled. Plot is not important; the idea behind them is, and calls for absorption in the space and time to look closer, perhaps to meditate or to dream. While a few of these are installed in the exhibition at The Broad and others are not, the opportunity to sit with them in full in a darkened room allows the possibility of a full appreciation.

“All Ono’s films are fundamentally conceptual, and are characterized by the same concerns that underpin her work in other media: the body, duration, ephemerality, seriality, measurement, language, an active engagement of the viewer as participant, a performative structure, attention to the properties of the material, and a break with the autonomous work of art. Many of these tenets later characterized both Conceptual Art and structural film for which Fluxus film is now acknowledged as an important precursor. In 1961, the Fluxus artist Henry Flynt wrote a definitive essay, “Concept Art,” in which he gave the first definition of Conceptual Art; terming it ‘concept art’ and ‘structure art,’ he linked it to the principles of experimental music being established by composers uch as La Monte Young, with whom Ono was presenting concerts in her Chambers Street loft the year Flynt’s text was written” – Chrissie Iles, “Erotic Conceptualism: The Films of Yoko Ono,” in Yes Yoko Ono (Japan Society & Harry N. Revisiting the groundbreaking feminist performance art movement in 1970s–1980s Los Angeles, one artist spotlights the inspirational, transformational, radical community exploding the narrative and status quo. Through interviews, archival footage, and personal reflections, feminist artist Cheri Gaulke revisits a foundational Los Angeles art space, the Woman’s Building (1973–1991), laying bare how a collective of artists transformed their bodies and voices through performance art into a powerful tool for activism, reshaping the cultural landscape for generations of women.
 
Join us in the Harold M. Williams Auditorium lobby from 1–3pm before the screening for a special viewing of archival objects from the Woman’s Building. After the film, Cheri Gaulke will be joined by artist Anne Gauldin and Getty Research Institute chief curator Glenn Phillips for a conversation. Following the screening, a reception will be held on the terrace.

Opening during a tense meeting between members of an underground Black Power group that leads to a stunning foot chase, Goodwin’s film weaves past and present to tell the story of the social awakening of a character only referred to as “the drifter” (screen legend Bernie Casey in his first starring role!). Shot on both 35mm and video and boasting a fierce, early performance from L.A. Rebellion icon Barbara O. Jones, BLACK CHARIOT is a fascinatingly iconoclastic revelation. Though world-premiered at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1971, BLACK CHARIOT has remained under-screened for decades — until now.

Sex ed doesn&#8217;t get any better than ***Dear Diary: A Film About Female Puberty ***(1981).  The crowd-pleasing BYU comedy short ***The Phone Call*** (1977) wants you to know that even geeky, karate and bassoon-loving Mormon fast food workers deserve love, and with a little self-confidence and a great ginger-fro, they just might get it! Plus, another sensational menstrucational treat: ***Linda&#8217;s Film on Menstruation*** (1974) complete with a menstrual game show, the mid-century mental hygiene primer ***Are You Popular? ***(1958) to gently remind you to not slut it up, and a special surprise cartoon from the **[A/V Geeks Archive](https://avgeeks.com)** that will have you rethinking everything you knew about the mouse! Arrive early to explore all the gross but necessary things that happen to the growing boy in the third edition of ***Boy To Man*** (1984). Everything screened on 16mm film.

***Dear Diary, a film about female puberty*** (Color, 1981, 26 min)

*The Welcome to the Dollhouse* of puberty primers! Our incredibly awkward thirteen-year-old protagonist offers a narrative alternative to the facts about female puberty. Our homely heroine encounters peer pressure from her boy-crazy friends, changing sex roles, and making out with a pillow with a smiley face, all while she waits to become a woman. A bonafide crowd pleaser and the absolute top tier of menstrucational film!
***The Phone Call*** (Color, 1977, 28 min)

30 years before *Napoleon Dynamite*, this BYU-sponsored &#8220;comedy&#8221; follows an awkward teenage boy with Art Garfunkle&#8217;s hairstylist and a penchant for karate and bassoons as he works up the courage to ask his crush for a date.  The Mormons want you to know that nice guys can finish first! An audience favorite starring Marc McClure (Jimmy Olson from the Christopher Reeves *Superman* series).

***Linda&#8217;s Film on Menstruation*** (Color, 1974, 18 min)

*&#8220;It means that blood is falling out of my uterus!&#8221;***

A goofy sex education classic with two groovy teens from the mid-seventies. Judy is a regular 15 year old girl going through what every woman goes through at some point, her first monthly visitor. Her 16 year old boyfriend hasn&#8217;t got a clue, and quite frankly she doesn&#8217;t really either. Thankfully there&#8217;s an obnoxious cartoon to explain it all to them! If that doesn&#8217;t work, maybe the menstruation game show will hammer home the facts. Also featuring actor Jonathan Banks from *Breaking Bad*.
