*Stolen Kingdom* is a documentary that delves into the history of mischief,

scandal and theft at Walt Disney World, ultimately leading to the theft of an

animatronic valued at nearly half a million dollars. The film features key

figures from the park&#8217;s underground community, each sharing their unique

stories.
As the narrative unfolds, early pranks and antics are shown to have inspired

more recent crimes, culminating in a true crime mystery. What begins as a tale

of friendship and passion ends with one lingering question:

Marking the first major presentation of works from the Julia Stoschek Foundation in the U.S., this audiovisual poem experiments with time-based media by placing contemporary video works in dialogue with silent films and early cinema classics. For the first time, a large-scale exhibition bridges these two universes, creating an unprecedented encounter across more than a century of visual storytelling.

Bringing one of the world’s leading collections of time-based art to a city defined by moving images sparks a rare conversation across disciplines. It dissolves the boundaries between visual art and cinema, museum and theater, white cube and black box. In doing so, it traces the evolution of visual storytelling over the past century, highlighting both the universality of human concerns and the shifting perspectives that shape their representation.

*Femme Grotesquerie* is a collection of ten contemporary experimental animation short films showcasing femininity as something unruly, excessive, and emboldened. Featuring a variety of mediums including direct animation, stop motion, and digital 2D, these films depict worlds lived, imagined, subverted, or reclaimed. Here, femininity is not decorative or contained but pushed to its edges: raw, acute, tender, funny, and volatile. From the animated porcelain puppets of *On Weary Wings Go By* to the glitter-bombed 16mm of *Moon Cycle (2023-2024)*, these films stage feminine aesthetics and narratives as something to be wielded, distorted, reclaimed, and reimagined on the animators’ own terms.

In a celebrated career spanning over four decades, Academy Award winner Gene Hackman (1930–2025) became recognized as one of the finest American actors of the New Hollywood era. A native Californian who relocated to New York to pursue acting in the late 1950s (with roommates Dustin Hoffman and Robert Duvall), Hackman toiled for over a decade off and on Broadway, and in dozens of small parts on film and television. By 1968, in between his star-making turns in the iconic features *Bonnie and Clyde* (1967) and *The French Connection* (1971), Hackman landed the lead role in the prestigious television anthology *CBS Playhouse*, in the installment, “My Father and My Mother.” 

Virtually unseen since its original broadcast, “My Father and My Mother” concerns a writer (Hackman) as he struggles to come to terms with decisions made in the care of his son with an intellectual disability. In seeking answers to his deep emotional crisis, the writer revisits his past, attempting to reconcile painful memories of his late parents (Ralph Bellamy, Jane Wyatt). An obscure footnote in Hackman’s oeuvre, the expressionistically staged drama (videotaped at CBS Television City) represents a creative high point in the actor’s television resume, revealing a performance of psychological depth uncommon to the small screen. In its review, the *Los Angeles Times* hailed Hackman as “outstanding,” noting the production was “... 90 minutes of thoughtful, well-played drama, of which there is much too little on TV these days.”

Described as the “unacknowledged love child of Walerian Borowczyk, Kenneth Anger, and Jean Cocteau,” **Bertrand Mandico** is a prolific and singular filmmaker. He has directed over forty short films, medium-length works, TV commercials, musical films, and features, and co-created the *Incoherence Manifesto* with Icelandic filmmaker Katrín Ólafsdóttir.

Central to Mandico&#8217;s methodology is shooting on expired film stock (16mm, 35mm, or Super 8), relying exclusively on in-camera special effects, and filming without sound, with all sound constructed in post-production. *The Wild Boys* marks Mandico’s debut feature and sends audiences on a transgressive, gender-bending (and genre-bending) surreal voyage—what the filmmaker describes as a “Robinson Crusoe–style adventure à la Jules Verne and William Burroughs.”

*The Wild Boys* tells the story of five adolescent boys—each played by actresses—who are enamored with the arts yet irresistibly drawn toward crime and transgression. Made in France by the brilliant Spanish director Luis Buñuel and the Spanish artist Salvador Dalí. *Un Chien Andalou* is one of the best-known surrealist films of the avant-garde movement of the 1920s. It uses dream logic that can be described in terms of then-popular Freudian free association, presenting a series of tenuously related scenes that attempt to shock the viewer’s inner psyche. Its opening scene is one of the most famous in cinema history.

Lightstruck is extremely excited to present a truly epic cinematic experience, as we screen Ulrike Ottinger’s nearly 8.5-hour, immersive documentary *Taiga* (1992) in a special all-day screening.

Known for her meticulously crafted experimental narrative films infusing political radicalism with a rich, surrealist opulence, German artist Ulrike Ottinger has also produced a singular body of memorable nonfiction work, though perhaps none so monumental – and mesmerizingly beautiful – as *Taiga*.

During an extended period spent in Northern Mongolia through multiple seasons, Ottinger approached ethnography in a radically different way, rejecting authoritative narrativizing or presumptuous didacticism. The extended length of the film reflects Ottinger’s larger impulse and approach in this project: to spend time – unadulterated, attentive time – with the Northern Mongolians she had befriended, and to enable their own distinctive approach to time and space in everyday life dictate the scale and pace of the film.

Over ten parts and 38 chapters, we see a seance, two weddings, preparation of foods, wrestling contests, music performances, storytelling sessions, and countless other events large and small, yet all equally defining the overall year-to-year and day-to-day experiences of nomadic life in the Darkhad Valley of Northern Mongolia. The film succeeds so brilliantly in part because of the unapologetically and earnestly fascinated gaze with which Ottinger documents what she sees, and the clear love for and engagement with people that the filmmaking reflects.

The first film to garner an Oscar nomination for a woman director, Lina Wertmüller&#8217;s masterful and provocative concentration camp sex comedy (yes, you read that right) is one of the director&#8217;s greatest works; magnificently weaving audaciousness and true human pathos into a masterpiece of world cinema. Wertmüller regular &#8211; the incredibly facile Giancarlo Giannini &#8211; plays Pasqualino Frafuso, known in Naples as &#8220;Pasqualino Seven Beauties,&#8221; a petty thief who lives off of the profits of his seven sisters while claiming to protect their honor at any cost. After a series of terrible choices and a stint in Mussolini&#8217;s army, he is eventually sent to a concentration camp where he plots to make his escape by seducing a German officer, played by Shirley Stoler (*The Honeymoon Killers*). Controversial from the jump, and funnier than any film about Nazis has a right to be &#8211; with absurdity at every corner along with staggering human truths &#8211; and stunning production design by Enrico Job, it&#8217;s the perfect time to rediscover this treasure of Italian cinema from one of the world&#8217;s greatest overlooked directors.

Discos Rolas presents a special 50th anniversary screening of *Chulas Fronteras* (1976), newly restored in 4K and paired with the short *Del Mero Corazón* (1979).

A performance by corrido singer-songwriter Gallo Armado (Monterrey, MX) will precede the screenings, and following them, filmmaker Maureen Gosling (editor of *Chulas Fronteras* and co-director of *Del Mero Corazón*) and Juan Antonio Cuéllar (longtime archivist of Arhoolie Records’ Frontera Collection) will join moderator Alexandra Lippman (Discos Rolas and Pomona College) for a discussion of the two films. The talk will be followed by DJ sets by Sonido Sabotaje (Monterrey, MX), Trucha Soul (Austin), and Sonido Sapo (LA).

Directed by Les Blank and Chris Strachwitz, *Chulas Fronteras (Beautiful Borders)* celebrates the famed Mexican-American musicians of the borderlands, the migrant farming communities from which they come, the strong family bonds of Tejanos, and the social protest ethos inscribed in their music. From joyous, lively dance tunes to soulful, political work songs, musica norteña fuses traditional Mexican harmonies with central European dancehall rhythms. The film brims with tender affection for its subjects, the vitality of their marvelous music, and the generosity of spirit that they show in the face of hardship. *Del Mero Corazón (Straight from the Heart)*, directed by Les Blank and Maureen Gosling, is a lyrical journey through the heart of Chicano culture as reflected in the love songs of the conjunto tejano and musica norteña traditions. The film was constructed from outtakes from *Chulas Fronteras* and additional footage shot in California.

The Moment

Originally staged by the East West Players, pioneering author [Wakako Yamauchi](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/09/obituaries/wakako-yamauchi-dead.html)’s adaptation of her award-winning play, “And the Soul Shall Dance,” for KCET’s *Hollywood Television Theatre* is a poetic, haunting drama that reveals the hardships Japanese Americans faced during the Great Depression. Set in California’s Imperial Valley, Yamauchi's moving work explores the lives of two farming families as they struggle to make ends meet and assimilate in a so-called land of opportunity defined by systemic racism.

Yamauchi’s teleplay unfolds through the eyes of a sensitive girl, Masako (Denice Kumagai), who bears witness to the challenges facing her loving parents (Pat Li, Sab Shimono) and the unraveling lives of a neighboring couple, Emiko (Haunani Minn) and Oka (Yuki Shimoda). Abused by her husband from an arranged marriage, Emiko dreams of a return to Japan to reclaim her past life, far from an inhospitable America. Her profound journey represents an indelible requiem for generations of Issei and Nisei beyond the play’s setting of the 1930s, with Yamauchi herself unjustly incarcerated as a teen at the concentration camp for Japanese Americans in Poston, Arizona, during World War II.

In his last film, shot shortly before his death, Monteiro plays João Vuvu, a Chaplinesque retired widower who spends his days riding his neighborhood bus and conversing with old and new acquaintances in the streets of Lisbon. In his austere, elegant apartment, the light is both welcoming and seductive while playful exchanges on lust and desire occur with different women who bless a routine of poetic solitude, antifascist anthems, and the mysteries of spiritual pleasure. The film’s famous final shot—a reflection of the director’s eye—shows, like few others, that cinema, in reflecting the unseen and unutterable, is where life meets death.

Join us in the microcinema for Brittany Shyne&#8217;s breathtaking and poetic documentary portrait of centennial farmers in the geographical south. Using lyrical black and white imagery, this meditative film examines the decline of generational black farmers and the significance of owning land.

Interweaving the stories of three Black generational farmers to create a collective and intimate portrait of farming today, *Seeds* is a moving and powerful exploration of their lives, joys and struggles as well as the fragility of legacy and owning land. 

With remarkable intimacy, the film documents their everyday lives &#8211; cotton harvesting, chasing cows, dealing with broken machinery and financial precarities. The camera relishes simple moments &#8211; conversations through car windows, candy from grandma’s purse as it captures moments of warmth, joy and fulfillment &#8211; turning them into striking vignettes that honor the families’ connection to the land and each other. 

But the sobering reality underscores the urgency of their story. Black farmers owned 16 million acres of land in 1910 but today, that number has dwindled to a fraction. The farmers in the community struggle to access funding that white farmers nearby seem to secure with ease. 

Through these inter-generational stories, we see the cycles of inequity and embedded racism that persist to this present day, and the signs of hope and renewal with younger generations of farmers. *Seeds* emphasizes how human beings are innately tied to our foundational roots, roots which carry our ancestral memories &#8211; somber, bitter, and sweet.

Tonight's show: THE MAGNIFICNET AMBERSONS The young, handsome, but somewhat wild Eugene Morgan wants to marry Isabel Amberson, daughter of a rich upper-class family, but she instead marries dull and steady Wilbur Minafer. Their only child, George, grows up a spoiled brat. Years later, Eugene comes back, now a mature widower and a successful automobile maker. After Wilbur dies, Eugene again asks Isabel to marry him, and she is receptive. But George resents the attentions paid to his mother, and he and his whacko aunt Fanny manage to sabotage the romance. A series of disasters befall the Ambersons and George, and he gets his come-uppance in the end.

Two hard-nosed NYPD officers (Ice-T and Judd Nelson) have got to go undercover to bring down the pushers and save the streets of Harlem from the crack epidemic. Rio de Janeiro, 1964. After suffering the end of a love affair, G.H., a sculptress from Copacabana’s artistic elite, decides to clean her apartment by herself, starting with the maid’s room. The day before, the maid had quit. In the room, G.H. faces a huge cockroach that reveals her own horror of the world, a reflection of a society full of prejudice against beings it treats as subordinate. Facing the insect, G.H. descends into an existential Via Crucis. This experience leads to the loss of her identity and makes her question all conventions that imprison females to this day. Based on a novel by Clarice Lispector.
