Poisoned water, damaged earth, and elevated cancer rates: environmental clean-up sites are one of the legacies left behind by the American chemical and munitions manufacturer “Olin Corporation”. Its other legacy was the John M. Olin Foundation, which donated millions to pushing a conservative agenda from the 1970s to the early 2000s. As a by-product or direct effort, the Olin Corporation and other conservative think tanks have had a deep and unsettling impact on American politics, family values, and women’s health.

Working again the field of the 16mm New Left essay film, Lee Anne Schmitt connects an array of topics, books, and objects to reflect on the rise of the new conservative movement and the effects of dark money on American politics and culture. In easily her most personal film to date—as her father worked for Olin —she considers these values and their implications after becoming a mother. In the face of appalling attacks on women’s biological rights and the current dominance of the Republican party, *Evidence* is a sobering primer on the state of America today. (Berlinale)

Artist Open House: *Photography and the Black Arts Movement*

Los Angeles Rebellion pioneer and filmmaker Barbara McCullough’s documentary *Horace Tapscott: Musical Griot* is a poetic meditation on the life of Los Angeles jazz musician, composer and community activist, Horace Tapscott (1934–1999). Screened in conjunction with the Getty’s exhibition [Photography and the Black Arts Movement, 1955–85][1], the film—four decades in the making—is a loving portrait of Tapscott, Black Los Angeles, and musical history. After the screening, McCullough will be joined on stage in conversation with Kristin Juarez, senior research specialist for the [African American Art History Initiative][2] at the Getty Research Institute. 

This program is part of the [Art on Screen][3] series, which celebrates moving-image media and its intersection with art and art histories, as well as the series [Black Visions: Film as Archive][4]. In addition, Barbara McCullough is featured in the Getty Research Institute’s [oral histories collection][5] as related to the 2008 program [Modern Art in Los Angeles: African American Avant-Gardes, 1965–1990][6].

“What a Wonderful World: An Audiovisual Poem,” edited by Udo Kittelmann, is a sweeping odyssey into the depths of human experience, unfolding through film and video. Marking the first major presentation of works from the Julia Stoschek Foundation in the U.S., this audiovisual poem experiments with time-based media by placing contemporary video works in dialogue with silent films and early cinema classics. For the first time, a large-scale exhibition bridges these two universes, creating an unprecedented encounter across more than a century of visual storytelling.

Bringing one of the world’s leading collections of time-based art to a city defined by moving images sparks a rare conversation across disciplines. It dissolves the boundaries between visual art and cinema, museum and theater, white cube and black box. In doing so, it traces the evolution of visual storytelling over the past century, highlighting both the universality of human concerns and the shifting perspectives that shape their representation.

“What a Wonderful World” presents a wide range of groundbreaking works by artists such as Marina Abramović, Cyprien Gaillard, Arthur Jafa, or Lu Yang, alongside cinematic milestones by Luis Buñuel, Walt Disney, Alice Guy-Blaché, Winsor McCay, and Georges Méliès. These nine Los Angeles based filmmakers move across California to China, Norway and Argentina in an evening program that examines intimacy and spectacle, consciousness and catharsis, memory and dreams.

Elenie Chung’s *Citric Acid* traces the slow fracture of an artistic bond under the pressure of competition, unfolding with quiet tension and striking subtlety. Tempe Hale’s *Pick Up the Stick* explores sibling intimacy through road trip footage and improvisation, while Maya E. Rudolph’s *ICEBERG* captures the emotional dissonance of youth caught between music, family obligation, and the ache of first love in a hazy Beijing summer.

Several works interrogate how private lives are entangled with broader systems of power, history, and spectacle. Norbert Shieh’s essay film *Two Miles East* revisits a military jet crash to meditate on suburban life, militarization, and the myth of paradise. Alex the Brown’s *Apologia* reframes public apologies by powerful figures through analog video manipulation, exposing the hollow choreography of accountability, while Sue Ding’s *A Spectacle of Her Appetites* uses found footage to explore an emotional spectrum of appetite.

Threaded throughout the program is an interest in how memory is recorded, distorted, and performed. Trevor Byrne’s *Indelible Laughter* excavates male camaraderie through humor as both bonding ritual and mask. Sean Huntley’s *Lapse* destabilizes perception through horror and photography, while Anderson Matthew and Satira’s *Madre de los Descalzos* reinterprets an Argentinian folkloric figure through a queer lens, in a fever-dream convergence of music video as experimental film.

It’s 1938 and Paris has become the tenuous home for refugees on the run from the Nazis and French immigration to avoid deportation. Among them is Charles Boyer’s doctor who haunts the city’s cafes and recognizes a shared trauma in Ingrid Bergman’s desperate émigré. A tragic romance, Arch of Triumph does double duty dramatizing the cruelty of both facism and an immigration system that would render people stateless by denying them safe haven.

In this ultra low-budget B-film produced by Czech émigré Rudolph Monter, Friedrich Torberg plays a Czech concert pianist jailed and tortured by the Nazis for playing “The Moldau,” a symbol of the Czech resistance to their occupation. Escaping his captors and surviving a harrowing journey, he ends up alone on a Caribbean island where his trauma overwhelms him as he longs for his missing wife — dying unbeknownst to him on another part of the island. Imbued with expressionist shadows and told through a series of interwoven flashbacks, *Voice in the Wind* powerfully expresses the disorientation and despair of European refugees in the wake of fascist violence.

Join us in the microcinema for Suzannah Herbert&#8217;s brilliant documentary *Natchez, *an entertaining and eye-opening film about reckoning with the ghosts of the past. This beautifully composed and expertly balanced film captures an unsettling clash between history and memory in a small Mississippi town; a layered mosaic of people contending with the weight of the past in a place where it is always present. Join the eccentric residents of Natchez in their grand mansions where they present a glimpse into an idyllic whitewashed history, and the Black tour guides and homeowners that seek to bring to light the atrocities that plagued the exquisite town for centuries, and the covert and overt racism that persists today. Equal parts amusing and disturbing, we journey through an antebellum tourist destination at a crossroads as it grapples with a deeply troubled history that is so thoroughly ingrained in its present, we’re left to wonder if it’s actually past at all.

But a rival TV executive isn&#8217;t taking the success well and vows to bring down Newman and all his new programming. It&#8217;s goofy, it&#8217;s stupid, it&#8217;s beyond hilarious, it&#8217;s everything you would expect from a Weird Al movie and so much more!

Animated Short Film

*World restoration premiere! *

One of the boldest films of the postwar period to tackle homegrown facism, the independent production, *The Burning Cross*, was the first anti-Klan film to explicitly depict Black Americans as victims of KKK terror on screen. A newly discharged veteran disgruntled by the changes he finds in his small town gravitates to the brutes of a Klan front group, the American Only Association. The brutal realism of the film’s depiction of the rhetoric and tactics culminates in the murder of a Black family burned in their home. The film, however, is not without compromise as an opening prologue restored in this version suggests that the Klan was originally founded by “men of good intentions” who would be betrayed by a corrupt, greedy few.

Released the year after both *Gentleman's Agreement* (1947) and *Crossfire* (1947) made anti-semitism their explicit subject, this independently produced film noir takes a grittier approach to the social problem despite never mentioning the word, although the implications are clear. Directed by Austrian-born émigre John Reinhardt, *Open Secret* unfolds as a small town mystery with a newlywed couple investigating the disappearance of the friend they’ve come to visit. What they discover is a community so corrupted by hate even children join in victimizing anyone who isn’t “the right kind of people.” Ironically, a sweaty cabal stands behind it all with ambitions to take their violent campaign to the national political stage.

*Femme Grotesquerie* is a collection of ten contemporary experimental animation short films showcasing femininity as something unruly, excessive, and emboldened. Featuring a variety of mediums including direct animation, stop motion, and digital 2D, these films depict worlds lived, imagined, subverted, or reclaimed. Here, femininity is not decorative or contained but pushed to its edges: raw, acute, tender, funny, and volatile. From the animated porcelain puppets of *On Weary Wings Go By* to the glitter-bombed 16mm of *Moon Cycle (2023-2024)*, these films stage feminine aesthetics and narratives as something to be wielded, distorted, reclaimed, and reimagined on the animators’ own terms.

In a celebrated career spanning over four decades, Academy Award winner Gene Hackman (1930–2025) became recognized as one of the finest American actors of the New Hollywood era. A native Californian who relocated to New York to pursue acting in the late 1950s (with roommates Dustin Hoffman and Robert Duvall), Hackman toiled for over a decade off and on Broadway, and in dozens of small parts on film and television. By 1968, in between his star-making turns in the iconic features *Bonnie and Clyde* (1967) and *The French Connection* (1971), Hackman landed the lead role in the prestigious television anthology *CBS Playhouse*, in the installment, “My Father and My Mother.” 

Virtually unseen since its original broadcast, “My Father and My Mother” concerns a writer (Hackman) as he struggles to come to terms with decisions made in the care of his son with an intellectual disability. In seeking answers to his deep emotional crisis, the writer revisits his past, attempting to reconcile painful memories of his late parents (Ralph Bellamy, Jane Wyatt). An obscure footnote in Hackman’s oeuvre, the expressionistically staged drama (videotaped at CBS Television City) represents a creative high point in the actor’s television resume, revealing a performance of psychological depth uncommon to the small screen. In its review, the *Los Angeles Times* hailed Hackman as “outstanding,” noting the production was “... 90 minutes of thoughtful, well-played drama, of which there is much too little on TV these days.”

Described as the “unacknowledged love child of Walerian Borowczyk, Kenneth Anger, and Jean Cocteau,” **Bertrand Mandico** is a prolific and singular filmmaker. He has directed over forty short films, medium-length works, TV commercials, musical films, and features, and co-created the *Incoherence Manifesto* with Icelandic filmmaker Katrín Ólafsdóttir.

Central to Mandico&#8217;s methodology is shooting on expired film stock (16mm, 35mm, or Super 8), relying exclusively on in-camera special effects, and filming without sound, with all sound constructed in post-production. *The Wild Boys* marks Mandico’s debut feature and sends audiences on a transgressive, gender-bending (and genre-bending) surreal voyage—what the filmmaker describes as a “Robinson Crusoe–style adventure à la Jules Verne and William Burroughs.”

*The Wild Boys* tells the story of five adolescent boys—each played by actresses—who are enamored with the arts yet irresistibly drawn toward crime and transgression. Lightstruck is extremely excited to present a truly epic cinematic experience, as we screen Ulrike Ottinger’s nearly 8.5-hour, immersive documentary *Taiga* (1992) in a special all-day screening.

Known for her meticulously crafted experimental narrative films infusing political radicalism with a rich, surrealist opulence, German artist Ulrike Ottinger has also produced a singular body of memorable nonfiction work, though perhaps none so monumental – and mesmerizingly beautiful – as *Taiga*.

During an extended period spent in Northern Mongolia through multiple seasons, Ottinger approached ethnography in a radically different way, rejecting authoritative narrativizing or presumptuous didacticism. The extended length of the film reflects Ottinger’s larger impulse and approach in this project: to spend time – unadulterated, attentive time – with the Northern Mongolians she had befriended, and to enable their own distinctive approach to time and space in everyday life dictate the scale and pace of the film.

Over ten parts and 38 chapters, we see a seance, two weddings, preparation of foods, wrestling contests, music performances, storytelling sessions, and countless other events large and small, yet all equally defining the overall year-to-year and day-to-day experiences of nomadic life in the Darkhad Valley of Northern Mongolia. The film succeeds so brilliantly in part because of the unapologetically and earnestly fascinated gaze with which Ottinger documents what she sees, and the clear love for and engagement with people that the filmmaking reflects.

Tonight's show: THE MAGNIFICNET AMBERSONS The young, handsome, but somewhat wild Eugene Morgan wants to marry Isabel Amberson, daughter of a rich upper-class family, but she instead marries dull and steady Wilbur Minafer. Their only child, George, grows up a spoiled brat. Years later, Eugene comes back, now a mature widower and a successful automobile maker. Rio de Janeiro, 1964. After suffering the end of a love affair, G.H., a sculptress from Copacabana’s artistic elite, decides to clean her apartment by herself, starting with the maid’s room. The day before, the maid had quit. In the room, G.H. faces a huge cockroach that reveals her own horror of the world, a reflection of a society full of prejudice against beings it treats as subordinate. Facing the insect, G.H. descends into an existential Via Crucis. This experience leads to the loss of her identity and makes her question all conventions that imprison females to this day. For over four decades, from 1944–1991, Albania was ruled by one of the most repressive dictatorships anywhere in the world. For most of that time, the Marxist-Leninist regime was led by Enver Hoxha, who ruthlessly suppressed any opposition and kept his fearful population isolated from the outside world. Throughout that period, Albanians could see images of themselves and their country only as represented in the fiction features and documentaries produced by the state-run New Albania Kinostudio. In 1993, two years after the end of the regime, Albanian American visual artist and photographer Elena Dorfman began regularly visiting her mother’s home country and in 2018 she was granted unprecedented access to the collection of the Albanian National Film Archive. The result of her archival research, Dorfman’s experimental feature documentary, *THE DREAM & THE LIE* brings scenes from the archive’s film holdings together in a widescreen triptych image that can feel both epic and intimate in scale all at once. A captivating exploration of how movies were used by the regime to construct a powerful national mythology that penetrated deep into daily life, *THE DREAM & THE LIE* is also a visually arresting example of how artists can creatively and productively engage with archival material. The UCLA Film & Television Archive is pleased to host Elena Dorfman at the Billy Wilder Theater for a screening of *THE DREAM & THE LIE* followed by an in person conversation with the Archive’s 2025 Artist-in-Residence Ariel West about the film and relationship between the artist and the archive.

Drawing from Tavares Strachan’s immersive excursions into hidden histories and speculative futures in the exhibition [*The Day Tomorrow Began*](https://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/tavares-strachan-day-tomorrow-began), mother and daughter design duo Aama Studio welcome us to a film salon where they will weave cinema, textiles, and personal memory to tell intergenerational stories. 

A tour of the exhibition, short films, and discussions will explore Black liberation, arcs of migration, and evolving identities, linking ancestral memory to possibilities of today and tomorrow.

LACMA

Based on the romance written by Raduan Nassar about a Lebanese family living in Brazil’s inland, the movie is a backwards version of the parable of the prodigal son. André is an unattached son, who left family and home due to severe paternal laws and suffocating maternal affection and love. Pedro, his older brother, received from his mother the mission to bring André back home.

The appearance of the brother causes André to remember moments he lived with his family since childhood and the reasons that led him to leave home: rigid and repressive morals of the father and the relationship with an excessive tendering mother. Against his father’s sermons, André celebrates life, sex and freedom. There is also an even dire motive: the incestuous relationship between André and his sister Ana. André agrees to go back home with his brother, but such decision will shake the very foundations of the family.
