**Plot synopsis:**

The continued appearance of giant unidentified life forms known as “S-Class Species (Kaiju)” has become commonplace in Japan. Conventional weapons have no effect on them. Having exhausted all other options, the Japanese Government issued the S-Class Species Suppression Protocol and formed an enforcement unit, known as the SSSP. In the midst of a Kaiju threat, a silver giant appears from beyond Earth&#8217;s atmosphere. In SSSP&#8217;s report, it is written— “Ultraman (tentative name), identity unknown.”

“What a Wonderful World: An Audiovisual Poem,” edited by Udo Kittelmann, is a sweeping odyssey into the depths of human experience, unfolding through film and video. Marking the first major presentation of works from the Julia Stoschek Foundation in the U.S., this audiovisual poem experiments with time-based media by placing contemporary video works in dialogue with silent films and early cinema classics. For the first time, a large-scale exhibition bridges these two universes, creating an unprecedented encounter across more than a century of visual storytelling.

Bringing one of the world’s leading collections of time-based art to a city defined by moving images sparks a rare conversation across disciplines. It dissolves the boundaries between visual art and cinema, museum and theater, white cube and black box. In doing so, it traces the evolution of visual storytelling over the past century, highlighting both the universality of human concerns and the shifting perspectives that shape their representation.

“What a Wonderful World” presents a wide range of groundbreaking works by artists such as Marina Abramović, Cyprien Gaillard, Arthur Jafa, or Lu Yang, alongside cinematic milestones by Luis Buñuel, Walt Disney, Alice Guy-Blaché, Winsor McCay, and Georges Méliès. Together, these works form a panoramic and layered portrait of humanity and history across 120 years: altogether ironic, sincere, critical and compassionate.

Discos Rolas presents a special 50th anniversary screening of *Chulas Fronteras* (1976), newly restored in 4K and paired with the short *Del Mero Corazón* (1979).

A performance by corrido singer-songwriter Gallo Armado (Monterrey, MX) will precede the screenings, and following them, filmmaker Maureen Gosling (editor of *Chulas Fronteras* and co-director of *Del Mero Corazón*) and Juan Antonio Cuéllar (longtime archivist of Arhoolie Records’ Frontera Collection) will join moderator Alexandra Lippman (Discos Rolas and Pomona College) for a discussion of the two films. The talk will be followed by DJ sets by Sonido Sabotaje (Monterrey, MX), Trucha Soul (Austin), and Sonido Sapo (LA).

Directed by Les Blank and Chris Strachwitz, *Chulas Fronteras (Beautiful Borders)* celebrates the famed Mexican-American musicians of the borderlands, the migrant farming communities from which they come, the strong family bonds of Tejanos, and the social protest ethos inscribed in their music. From joyous, lively dance tunes to soulful, political work songs, musica norteña fuses traditional Mexican harmonies with central European dancehall rhythms. The film brims with tender affection for its subjects, the vitality of their marvelous music, and the generosity of spirit that they show in the face of hardship. *Del Mero Corazón (Straight from the Heart)*, directed by Les Blank and Maureen Gosling, is a lyrical journey through the heart of Chicano culture as reflected in the love songs of the conjunto tejano and musica norteña traditions. Originally staged by the East West Players, pioneering author [Wakako Yamauchi](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/09/obituaries/wakako-yamauchi-dead.html)’s adaptation of her award-winning play, “And the Soul Shall Dance,” for KCET’s *Hollywood Television Theatre* is a poetic, haunting drama that reveals the hardships Japanese Americans faced during the Great Depression. Set in California’s Imperial Valley, Yamauchi's moving work explores the lives of two farming families as they struggle to make ends meet and assimilate in a so-called land of opportunity defined by systemic racism.

Yamauchi’s teleplay unfolds through the eyes of a sensitive girl, Masako (Denice Kumagai), who bears witness to the challenges facing her loving parents (Pat Li, Sab Shimono) and the unraveling lives of a neighboring couple, Emiko (Haunani Minn) and Oka (Yuki Shimoda). Abused by her husband from an arranged marriage, Emiko dreams of a return to Japan to reclaim her past life, far from an inhospitable America. Her profound journey represents an indelible requiem for generations of Issei and Nisei beyond the play’s setting of the 1930s, with Yamauchi herself unjustly incarcerated as a teen at the concentration camp for Japanese Americans in Poston, Arizona, during World War II.

In his last film, shot shortly before his death, Monteiro plays João Vuvu, a Chaplinesque retired widower who spends his days riding his neighborhood bus and conversing with old and new acquaintances in the streets of Lisbon. In his austere, elegant apartment, the light is both welcoming and seductive while playful exchanges on lust and desire occur with different women who bless a routine of poetic solitude, antifascist anthems, and the mysteries of spiritual pleasure. The film’s famous final shot—a reflection of the director’s eye—shows, like few others, that cinema, in reflecting the unseen and unutterable, is where life meets death.

Join us in the microcinema for Brittany Shyne&#8217;s breathtaking and poetic documentary portrait of centennial farmers in the geographical south. Using lyrical black and white imagery, this meditative film examines the decline of generational black farmers and the significance of owning land.

Interweaving the stories of three Black generational farmers to create a collective and intimate portrait of farming today, *Seeds* is a moving and powerful exploration of their lives, joys and struggles as well as the fragility of legacy and owning land. 

With remarkable intimacy, the film documents their everyday lives &#8211; cotton harvesting, chasing cows, dealing with broken machinery and financial precarities. The camera relishes simple moments &#8211; conversations through car windows, candy from grandma’s purse as it captures moments of warmth, joy and fulfillment &#8211; turning them into striking vignettes that honor the families’ connection to the land and each other. 

But the sobering reality underscores the urgency of their story. Black farmers owned 16 million acres of land in 1910 but today, that number has dwindled to a fraction. The farmers in the community struggle to access funding that white farmers nearby seem to secure with ease. 

Through these inter-generational stories, we see the cycles of inequity and embedded racism that persist to this present day, and the signs of hope and renewal with younger generations of farmers. *Seeds* emphasizes how human beings are innately tied to our foundational roots, roots which carry our ancestral memories &#8211; somber, bitter, and sweet.

With camera in hand, Eve-Lauryn LaFountain's Experimental Films extinguish mythical ideals of history in the American Southwest, while engaging a troth of interrelated dynamics between the land and those who hear its beauty and history. The films often bind together the very layered and enchanting awareness(es) between place and space, while concomitantly living life and critiquing stereotypical media representations of Native people and cultures. At other times, the films exhibit imagery symbolizing a liberated consciousness, free from a contaminated imagination suppressing the textures and colors of our everyday experience of land and landscapes. Eve memorializes the strained and distant relationship contemporary life has to a directly connected spirit to nature. Simultaneously she heightens the reading we have of existence through audiovisual blessings and cleansings, from legacies of colonialism(s), and cycles of ecological collision and collapse. The films leaf through dynamics of heritage and generational knowledge, juxtaposing meditations on tradition(s), with, as Eve says, a "braiding" and "resurrecting", an ascending, and descending, into and beneath time, and its reality. - Diego Robles, programmer

Eve-Lauryn Little Shell LaFountain is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. She is a multimedia artist, filmmaker, and educator. Her work explores identity, history, Indigenous Futurism, feminism, ghosts, magic, and her mixed Native American and Jewish heritage through lens-based media and installations. She is a Mandel Institute Cultural Leadership Fellow, and has received support for her work from the Sundance Institute, Mike Kelley Foundation, Andy Warhol Foundation, Cousin Collective and more. She has exhibited her work in venues and festivals around the world. She holds a BA from Hampshire College, and a dual MFA in Film & Video and Photography & Media from CalArts.

LA Filmforum: Eve-Lauryn LaFountain - Conversation Pieces

Director Fritz Lang’s post-war espionage thriller follows Gary Cooper’s nuclear physicist from his lab working on the Manhattan Project to an Italian resistance unit on an OSS mission to rescue a dissident scientist forced to help the Nazis on their own atomic bomb. Lang delivers some outstanding action sequences (no one socks a Nazi quite like Gary Cooper) while later-blacklisted screenwriters, Ring Lardner Jr. and Albert Maltz, put a progressive spin on the film’s nuclear politics — “When are we going to be given a billion dollars to wipe out cancer?” decries Cooper’s physicist — alongside its message that resistance to fascism isn’t only necessary but a moral obligation.

In this mystery melodrama, the legacy of a “great man” of America is called into question after his sudden death in a suspicious car accident. Spencer Tracy is the grizzled veteran reporter who starts asking all the wrong questions of Katharine Hepburn’s grieving but suspicious widow. Donald Ogden Stewart’s script comes with a few paeans to American exceptionalism — ”You and I are free men today because centuries ago some unknown guy got an idea in his head that he was just as good as the guy who was bossing him” — in a story that decidedly suggests “it can happen here” as homegrown fascists wrap themselves in patriotic imagery and rhetoric.

A tragic romance, Arch of Triumph does double duty dramatizing the cruelty of both facism and an immigration system that would render people stateless by denying them safe haven.

In this ultra low-budget B-film produced by Czech émigré Rudolph Monter, Friedrich Torberg plays a Czech concert pianist jailed and tortured by the Nazis for playing “The Moldau,” a symbol of the Czech resistance to their occupation. Escaping his captors and surviving a harrowing journey, he ends up alone on a Caribbean island where his trauma overwhelms him as he longs for his missing wife — dying unbeknownst to him on another part of the island. Imbued with expressionist shadows and told through a series of interwoven flashbacks, *Voice in the Wind* powerfully expresses the disorientation and despair of European refugees in the wake of fascist violence.

When his uncle hands George Newman (Weird Al) the keys to his flailing UHF (look it up youngsters!) station, George starts to nix the reruns and start making ridiculous and subversive content that finally brings in an audience. But a rival TV executive isn&#8217;t taking the success well and vows to bring down Newman and all his new programming. It&#8217;s goofy, it&#8217;s stupid, it&#8217;s beyond hilarious, it&#8217;s everything you would expect from a Weird Al movie and so much more!

Animated Short Film

*World restoration premiere! *

One of the boldest films of the postwar period to tackle homegrown facism, the independent production, *The Burning Cross*, was the first anti-Klan film to explicitly depict Black Americans as victims of KKK terror on screen. A newly discharged veteran disgruntled by the changes he finds in his small town gravitates to the brutes of a Klan front group, the American Only Association. The brutal realism of the film’s depiction of the rhetoric and tactics culminates in the murder of a Black family burned in their home. The film, however, is not without compromise as an opening prologue restored in this version suggests that the Klan was originally founded by “men of good intentions” who would be betrayed by a corrupt, greedy few.

Released the year after both *Gentleman's Agreement* (1947) and *Crossfire* (1947) made anti-semitism their explicit subject, this independently produced film noir takes a grittier approach to the social problem despite never mentioning the word, although the implications are clear. Directed by Austrian-born émigre John Reinhardt, *Open Secret* unfolds as a small town mystery with a newlywed couple investigating the disappearance of the friend they’ve come to visit. What they discover is a community so corrupted by hate even children join in victimizing anyone who isn’t “the right kind of people.” Ironically, a sweaty cabal stands behind it all with ambitions to take their violent campaign to the national political stage.

*Femme Grotesquerie* is a collection of ten contemporary experimental animation short films showcasing femininity as something unruly, excessive, and emboldened. Featuring a variety of mediums including direct animation, stop motion, and digital 2D, these films depict worlds lived, imagined, subverted, or reclaimed. Here, femininity is not decorative or contained but pushed to its edges: raw, acute, tender, funny, and volatile. From the animated porcelain puppets of *On Weary Wings Go By* to the glitter-bombed 16mm of *Moon Cycle (2023-2024)*, these films stage feminine aesthetics and narratives as something to be wielded, distorted, reclaimed, and reimagined on the animators’ own terms.

In a celebrated career spanning over four decades, Academy Award winner Gene Hackman (1930–2025) became recognized as one of the finest American actors of the New Hollywood era. A native Californian who relocated to New York to pursue acting in the late 1950s (with roommates Dustin Hoffman and Robert Duvall), Hackman toiled for over a decade off and on Broadway, and in dozens of small parts on film and television. By 1968, in between his star-making turns in the iconic features *Bonnie and Clyde* (1967) and *The French Connection* (1971), Hackman landed the lead role in the prestigious television anthology *CBS Playhouse*, in the installment, “My Father and My Mother.” 

Virtually unseen since its original broadcast, “My Father and My Mother” concerns a writer (Hackman) as he struggles to come to terms with decisions made in the care of his son with an intellectual disability. In seeking answers to his deep emotional crisis, the writer revisits his past, attempting to reconcile painful memories of his late parents (Ralph Bellamy, Jane Wyatt). An obscure footnote in Hackman’s oeuvre, the expressionistically staged drama (videotaped at CBS Television City) represents a creative high point in the actor’s television resume, revealing a performance of psychological depth uncommon to the small screen. In its review, the *Los Angeles Times* hailed Hackman as “outstanding,” noting the production was “... 90 minutes of thoughtful, well-played drama, of which there is much too little on TV these days.”

Lightstruck presents *Tacita Dean & Robert Nelson: Acting on Film* with Tacita Dean in person!

Lightstruck is honored to welcome artist Tacita Dean for a rare cinematic projection of her riveting 2015 film *Event for a Stage*, paired with Robert Nelson’s seldom seen 1982 short film *Hamlet Act*, both screening in their original 16mm format. These two remarkable films each explore the endlessly complex interplay between live performance and cinematic construction, as the camera, editing, and even the director’s presence complicate the illusion of narrative continuity, not to mention the presumptive reality that appears to hover at the margins.

Nelson’s film is a brilliant and unusual deconstruction of Hamlet’s play-within-a-play, activated into multiple, recursive layers of artifice through its employment of film and video to extend the original text’s nested complexity. Outtakes, retakes, and the typically unseen ragged edges of live performance carry as much meaning here as Shakespeare’s precise words and stage directions, giving us an exploded view of the highly constructed nature of cinematic performance.

Also invoking Shakespeare is actor Stephen Dillane in Dean’s breathtaking film, in which the volleying interactions between actor and director frame an almost molecular exploration of live performance and its resistance and acquiescence to being captured. Dean filmed the absolutely magnetic Dillane over four disparate performances, recomposing them into an explicitly filmic thread of continuity as he navigates between themes of memory, forgetting, family, artifice, and above all, the slippery power balance between actor and filmmaker at the heart of every cinematic performance.

Described as the “unacknowledged love child of Walerian Borowczyk, Kenneth Anger, and Jean Cocteau,” **Bertrand Mandico** is a prolific and singular filmmaker. He has directed over forty short films, medium-length works, TV commercials, musical films, and features, and co-created the *Incoherence Manifesto* with Icelandic filmmaker Katrín Ólafsdóttir.

Central to Mandico&#8217;s methodology is shooting on expired film stock (16mm, 35mm, or Super 8), relying exclusively on in-camera special effects, and filming without sound, with all sound constructed in post-production. *The Wild Boys* marks Mandico’s debut feature and sends audiences on a transgressive, gender-bending (and genre-bending) surreal voyage—what the filmmaker describes as a “Robinson Crusoe–style adventure à la Jules Verne and William Burroughs.”

Lightstruck is extremely excited to present a truly epic cinematic experience, as we screen Ulrike Ottinger’s nearly 8.5-hour, immersive documentary *Taiga* (1992) in a special all-day screening.

Known for her meticulously crafted experimental narrative films infusing political radicalism with a rich, surrealist opulence, German artist Ulrike Ottinger has also produced a singular body of memorable nonfiction work, though perhaps none so monumental – and mesmerizingly beautiful – as *Taiga*.

During an extended period spent in Northern Mongolia through multiple seasons, Ottinger approached ethnography in a radically different way, rejecting authoritative narrativizing or presumptuous didacticism. The extended length of the film reflects Ottinger’s larger impulse and approach in this project: to spend time – unadulterated, attentive time – with the Northern Mongolians she had befriended, and to enable their own distinctive approach to time and space in everyday life dictate the scale and pace of the film.

Over ten parts and 38 chapters, we see a seance, two weddings, preparation of foods, wrestling contests, music performances, storytelling sessions, and countless other events large and small, yet all equally defining the overall year-to-year and day-to-day experiences of nomadic life in the Darkhad Valley of Northern Mongolia. The film succeeds so brilliantly in part because of the unapologetically and earnestly fascinated gaze with which Ottinger documents what she sees, and the clear love for and engagement with people that the filmmaking reflects.
