### **ABOUT THE FILM: **

Joel grew up in the church but has recently started questioning his beliefs. After sensing a supernatural presence from his deceased father, Joel becomes compelled to visit his cousin in New York. But shortly after arriving, they become embroiled in a series of mysterious homicides of local men, all of whom were last seen in the company of a mysterious and beautiful woman. Beautifully photographed by Ernest Dickerson (DO THE RIGHT THING) and starring Kadeem Hardison (I’M GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA) and Samuel L. Jackson (PULP FICTION), this sole directorial effort from child actor James Bond III is a macabre, neon-tinged portrait of late 1980s Brooklyn. An irreverent biopic vividly realized through fantastic psychedelia and handmade sets with an ever-topical feminist approach, *Revelations of Divine Love* is inspired by and adapted from the memoir of 14th-century mystic and philosopher Julian of Norwich and an account of religious ecstasy, plague, and revolt considered to be the first book to be authored by a woman in English.

The film envisions the life of Julian in the lead up to her anchorage—through her illness and the onset of her godly visions—and follows her through the years as she indulges in her desire to write and becomes a revered and holy figure to those in her town and beyond the city walls.

*“In October 1975, I was invited by Stig Björkman, a Swedish filmmaker in charge of production for the Danish Film Institute, to begin research on a feature film which was to be funded chiefly by the Institute, and two private producers, Steen Herdel and Ebbe Preisler. Together with Danish director/writer Poul Martinsen and journalist Carsten Clante, we co-wrote the script of what became EVENING LAND. Like most of my other films, this one involved extensive research, a brief outline, and almost no written dialogue. I began filming in March 1976 – with a cast of 192 non-professional actors, and Joan Churchill (PUNISHMENT PARK) as cinematographer. EVENING LAND depicts ‘fictional’ events in Europe at that time – beginning with a strike at a shipyard in Copenhagen over the building of four submarines for the French navy: not only because the financially troubled management has proposed a wage freeze to secure the contract, but because it is discovered that the vessels can be fitted with nuclear missiles. At the same time, a summit meeting of European Common Market ministers takes place in Copenhagen, and a group of radical demonstrators kidnap the Danish EEC Minister in protest against the production of nuclear submarines in Denmark, and in support of the strikers’ demands. The Danish police not only brutally attack a demonstration by the strikers, they also locate and rescue the kidnapped minister, and capture or kill the ‘terrorists.'” – Peter Watkins*

The debut feature from the great Japanese filmmaker Shunji Iwai (ALL ABOUT LILY CHOU-CHOU) is a ‘90s romantic drama par excellence, featuring real-life J-pop idol Miho Nakayama in a dual role. Set among the picturesque, snowy vistas of Hokkaidō, the film follows Hiroko (Nakayama), a young widow whose fiancé Itsuki died tragically two years ago. On a whim, she sends a letter to his childhood address, and is surprised to receive a response from a female Itsuki (Nakayama), who just so happens to be her fiancé’s former classmate. Their continued exchanges stir up childhood memories and revelations, as the two women deepen their relationship and come to terms with adulthood. Shot by Iwai’s longtime cinematographer Noboru Shinoda, the film’s sumptuous widescreen photography and warm sentimentality is a paean to the heyday of 1990s arthouse cinema.

It’s home to a host of interesting strangers: Roslyn; a beautiful but naive woman, reeling from a shotgun divorce, who has never stepped foot out of Reno, and Guido and Gay; a pair of erstwhile cowboys with a half-finished house in the sticks and bittersweet memories of a west that’s no longer wild. Lightstruck presents *Jordan Belson: Knowledge Beyond Words pgm II.*

On June 25 and July 9, Lightstruck is honored to present two evenings devoted to one of cinema's unparalleled visionaries – Jordan Belson – an artist and filmmaker whose singular body of work has justifiably been the subject of devoted contemplation and ecstatic appreciation for over six decades. Belson's films defy concrete description, which is part of their deep and personal appeal, hinting as they do at "a knowledge that is beyond words", as Belson once told writer and curator Raymond Foye (to whom we are greatly indebted for being able to present these programs). While his earliest films embodied more familiar aspects of mid-century non-objective visual art, the early 1960s marked a radical shift into intensely mystical and elusive imagery – achieved largely through Belson's own remarkable photographic techniques – to give miraculous form to the innermost regions of imagination and consciousness.

Our second program devoted to the films of Jordan Belson spans his career up to the early 1970s, with a selection of ever-evolving and -expanding techniques of singularly mystical expression, most films screening on recently struck 16mm prints, courtesy of the Belson estate and Raymond Foye. Inspired by relationships to the worlds of Non-Objective art, jazz, meditation, and encounters with West Coast artist friends such as Harry Smith and James Whitney, Belson was consistently exploring and discovering new methods and mediums of visualization that engage with a level of consciousness which feels thrilling and otherworldly, yet somehow deeply familiar. In the late 1950s, through his planetarium “Vortex Concerts” in collaboration with sound artist Henry Jacobs, Belson amplified his vision with complex multimedia light shows which helped define the concept of “expanded cinema” and greatly influenced his filmmaking techniques. In the late 1960s, he began exploring the medium of video, synthesizing multilayered contemplations in such films as Cosmos. In 1974, Belson would team up with video artist, musician, and polymediast, Stephen Beck, to produce one of the ultimate visionary fusions of film and video in Cycles, which will conclude the evening in a glorious 16mm print.

The films screening in this program are: Bop Scotch (1952), Mandala (1952), Séance (1959), Re-Entry (1964), Momentum (1968), Cosmos (1969), Light (1973), Union (1975, by Stephen Beck), and Cycles (1974, by Jordan Belson & Stephen Beck).

*The Misconceived* is a tragicomedy about millennials turning forty, which follows a struggling yet entitled white American male found throughout the annals of indie film who apprehends his likely cultural irrelevance during the Biden era.

The film utilizes experimental 3D-rendered processes entirely within a video game engine, utilizing motion capture, facial recognition, voice performance, and a vast library of stock media. *The Misconceived* takes full advantage of the new ability to shoot in virtual worlds and a marketplace of 3D architectural and character models to create an uncanny mirror to contemporary society (notably, not using generative AI).

In many ways, the movie is an argument for and against its right to exist.

Korean director Na Hong-jin delivers the ultimate supernatural horror experience in *The Wailing*, where sinister mystery meets surreal diabolism. A stranger arrives in a little village and soon after a mysterious sickness starts spreading. A policeman is drawn into the incident and is forced to solve the mystery in order to save his daughter.
