Through a family of four siblings, each from different fathers, Naruse explores the suffocating family life of Kiyoko’s *shitamachi* household and its surroundings. LIGHTNING is a buildup of vignettes, events and occurrences, as Kiyo experiences the world around her—misfortune, family tragedy, interpersonal quarrels and the vulgarities of men—trying to make sense of a modern existence where the promise of happiness still comes second for women.

PHANTASMAGORIA presents Sky Hopinka’s short experimental film FAINTING SPELLS (2018) alongside Colombian feature film EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT (2015).

Myth, knowledge, and sacred indigenous plants are at the center of these two films. In each film, the landscape and its flora is at once sublime and fragile. For his dreamlike abstract short FAINTING SPELLS, filmmaker Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation/Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians) creates an origin myth poem for the medicinal flowering plant Xąwįska, also known as the Indian pipe plant or the ghost flower, traditionally used to revive those who have fainted. In Ciro Guerra’s feature film EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT, Amazonian shaman Karamakate encounters two different Western scientists (at two different stages of his life), each seeking the sacred hallucinogenic Yakruna plant. Through poetic storytelling and hypnotic imagery, both films examine themes of cultural identity, loss, and reconnection to the spiritual world in the face of colonialism and destruction.

### EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT

At once blistering and poetic, the ravages of colonialism cast a dark shadow over the South American landscape in EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT, the third feature by Ciro Guerra. Filmed in stunning black-and-white, SERPENT centers on Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him. The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers (Theodor Koch-Grünberg and Richard Evans Schultes) who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of the sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant.

In the aftermath of an unnamed war, a soldier (Davit Beybutyan) is sent by a family to take their daughter (Veronika Poghosyan) under his wing, while withholding the news that her father has been mistakenly killed. Traveling on the road, the couple are intimately drawn to each other as they drift through the war-torn landscape. Never resorting to easy metaphors, Haroutounian's film feels both intuitive and ritualistic in the depiction of a culture, culminating in a mesmerizing extended wedding sequence that is a work of pure cinema. -MG

As flinty chanteuse Petey Brown, Ida Lupino is at the apex of her big-screen glamour, offering a radiantly romantic vision of the post-WWII American woman—able to settle everyone’s hash but her own. A coast-to-coast road trip through a world of atmospheric nightclubs, tenements, and backlot streets, this majestic melodrama is part noir, part soap opera, and pure Hollywood magic. Reportedly, the film’s mix of music, romance, and noir inspired Martin Scorsese to make NEW YORK, NEW YORK. This was Lupino’s third film with director Walsh, and, despite the high heels and form-fitting lamé gowns, Ida is every bit as tough as she was in THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT and HIGH SIERRA, her first two films with Walsh. Featuring an array of classic songs, including “Why Was I Born?” and the Gershwin melody “The Man I Love,” Lupino’s singing voice for the film was dubbed by American contralto Peg La Centra, wife of actor Paul Stewart, a NOIR CITY favorite.

Originally released February 21, 1947

San Francisco physician Richard Talbot (Kent Smith) falls hard for nightclub singer Nora Prentiss (Ann Sheridan), but she cuts off their budding romance when she learns the smitten sawbones is married. Not to be deterred, the doc devises an outlandishly noirish scheme to reunite with Nora under a new identity. Need we say that tragic consequences ensue? This pitch-black melodrama was tailored by Warner Bros. for oft-suspended star Sheridan, the studio’s “Oomph Girl,” who had turned down the lead role in 1945’s MILDRED PIERCE allowing Joan Crawford to snag an Oscar and a career comeback. Sold as a romantic “woman’s picture,” the film is really focused on the doctor’s terminal case of *amour fou*, which spirals into one of the darkest and most daring plot twists in the genre. Director Vincent Sherman elicits career-best performances from both Smith and Sheridan, while the quintessentially noir tone is supplied by legendary DP James Wong Howe. A neglected classic!

THE MAN I LOVE / NORA PRENTISS

Marking the 90th anniversary of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), Silvia Ribelles de la Vega, a scholar and historian at The Packard Humanities Institute, presents a program featuring seldom-seen views of the war, drawn from the Hearst Metrotone News collection.

The preservation of and access to the collection have been made possible only through the incredible efforts of The Packard Humanities Institute, in collaboration with the UCLA Film & Television Archive, to expand access to one of the most significant newsreel archives of the 20th century. This collection of 27 million feet of newsreels includes approximately 288 reels of film related to the Spanish Civil War.

At the time, newsreels — short-form, theatrically exhibited news stories — were often the only moving image records of unfolding events available to international audiences. Hearst cameramen covered the conflict extensively and, remarkably, filmed from both sides of the war. Ribelles’ presentation will move chronologically from 1936 to 1939 and feature not only edited newsreels but also selections from longer, previously unseen footage.

Describing the Hearst Metrotone News collection as “a gem for any researcher,” Ribelles highlights the opportunities this newly accessible material offers to scholars and history enthusiasts alike. Drawing on production records, maps and related archival documents, she will examine how the newsreels were filmed, edited and circulated, and how studying them today can surface overlooked histories and reshape our understanding of the Spanish Civil War.

90 years after a conflict that tore a nation apart, these newsreels stand as vital audiovisual evidence and as a testament to the enduring impact of making archival collections accessible to all.

Gordon Matta-Clark, the artist, urban explorer, and “anarchitect” most famous for the “building cuts” he performed on various decomposing structures in the 1970s, made 18 short films before his untimely death from cancer in 1978. Aside from walking through the buildings themselves, which have all since been demolished, film provides the ideal venue in which to experience Matta-Clark’s singular artistry. The power of the cut to create strange new juxtapositions, the epistemological faculty of an opening that introduces light to new planes — metaphorical connections between Matta-Clark’s work and the cinematic apparatus abound. This program collects six of his films shot between 1972 and 1976, documenting four building cuts, one formal experiment, and one car crash. In all of his work, Matta-Clark sought to expose the thinness of the boundaries that divide people, mediums, spaces, and ideas. With sledgehammer, chainsaw, and his own two feet, he punched through these walls with an urgency that has been increasingly felt in the decades since his passing, cutting new holes for light to pour in.

Created by trailblazing multi-hyphenate Keenen Ivory Wayans, the innovative series turned primetime into a cultural battlefield, uproariously harnessing satire and spectacle to explore issues of race, class and celebrity. In his book, *The Black Pack: Comedy, Race, and Resistance*, author Artel Great situates *In Living Color *within the broader lineage of Black sketch comedy, illuminating how the innovative series served as an industrial weapon, seizing time, space and cultural power, often forcing America to laugh at what it preferred to ignore. In the process, the hit series won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series in 1990.

Helping to launch a breakout cast of highly gifted comedians that included David Alan Grier, Daymon Wayans, Kim Wayans, Tommy Davison, Jamie Foxx and Jim Carrey, *In Living Color *introduced a lasting lexicon of original characters and catchphrases to pop culture, from Homey D. Clown (“Homey, don’t play that”) to Men on Film (“two snaps up”) that continue to resonate long after the series' final broadcast on Fox in 1994.

A train compartment is a space where people are temporarily removed from their everyday lives. For a few hours or days, they form a fleeting community, their experiences unfolding according to a timetable. A train journey can be beautiful and magical, but also deeply dramatic—sometimes filled with hope for change, and at other times marked by a stark absence of it.

Throughout history, similar scenes repeat themselves in railway carriages: soldiers departing for war and returning wounded—or not at all—followed by waves of civilians, evacuees, prisoners of war, and the aftermath of conflict. Eventually, these moments give way once again to ordinary travel, until the cycle repeats.

*Trains* is an artistic exploration that expands the language of cinema while rebuilding the emotional connection between the viewer and archival reality.

There&#8217;s a single piece of land around Flagstone with water on it, and rail baron Morton (Gabriele Ferzetti) aims to have it, knowing the new railroad will have to stop there. He sends his henchman Frank (Henry Fonda) to scare the land&#8217;s owner, McBain (Frank Wolff), but Frank kills him instead and pins it on a known bandit, Cheyenne (Jason Robards). They pick up Grisby, Bannister's law partner, en route. Bannister has a wife, Elsa, who seems to like Michael much better than she likes her husband. After they dock in Sausalito, Michael goes along with Grisby's weird plan to fake his (Grisby's) murder so he can disappear untailed. He wants the $5000 Grisby has offered, so he can run off with Elsa. But Grisby turns up actually murdered, and Michael gets blamed for it. Somebody set him up, but it is not clear who or how. Bannister (the actual murderer?) defends Michael in court

Acclaimed Argentinean filmmaker Lucrecia Martel (ZAMA, THE HEADLESS WOMAN) takes a sweeping approach to this tragic true story, triangulating the murder trial of three men, the lives of activist Chocobar and his fellow Chuchagasta people, and the centuries-old, colonialist legacy of land and property theft across Latin America.

This screening will be followed by a conversation with **Lucrecia Martel **and Director of Photography **Ernesto de Carvalho**. Vidiots is thrilled to welcome the legendary and luminous filmmaker **Lucrecia Martel** for a very special evening featuring the new 4K Restoration of her mesmerizing mystery *The Headless Woman*.

A bourgeois middle-aged dentist named Veronica (MARIA ONETTO) drives alone on a dirt road, becomes distracted, and runs over something.  Immediately she becomes disoriented, unmoored from her identity and reality, like a sleepwalker who’s actually awake.  As the week go on, she becomes obsessed with the possibility that she may have killed someone: a young boy whose body is found in a roadside canal.  Veronica tries to piece together what happened while her husband systematically erases her tracks.  A chilling parable about a woman in shock, Lucrecia Martel’s third feature explores the intricacies of class and the role of women in a male-dominated society.

**About the Restoration:******

Restoration carried out from the 4K scan of the original 35 mm camera negative, a first-generation internegative, and the original digital sound mix. Reference elements included a duplicate negative and a vintage 35 mm release print. The process included digital cleaning to remove the imperfections of time and color correction to restore the original brightness, contrast, and chromatic values. Effects created in the digital intermediate were preserved.

Restoration produced by Rei Pictures, with the support of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Additional support and organization by Strand Releasing USA. Carried out at Cubic Restoration in Buenos Aires. Color grading was led by Gustavo Biazzi, under the consultation of cinematographer Bárbara Álvarez; digital image restoration by Margarita Moscoso; sound work by Federico Esquerro; and mastering by Julián Giulianelli. The project was coordinated by Fernando Madedo, and the entire process was supervised by director Lucrecia Martel.

Meanwhile, the marriage between the son, Shuichi, and his wife, Kikuko, begins to disintegrate. Instead of returning home, Shuichi opts to spend most of his evenings downing alcohol and, it is soon confirmed, seeing another woman. Shingo sets out in an effort to mend his son’s marriage, in an effort to save the happiness of his rueful daughter-in-law.

In Every Flower the Face of God - Closing Reception & Zine Release

For the first time since its creation in 1979, *For Whose Entertainment *by renowned filmmaker, artist, and educator Ben Caldwell has its first public screening.

The film is a critique of Black comedians and their work, in which Caldwell asks who Black comedians are trying to appeal to and entertain most: Black audiences or white audiences? Through the use of appropriated footage and collage, the filmmaker deconstructs Blackness in entertainment in the 1960s and 1970s. *For Whose Entertainment* brings together important figures in Black film and scholarship, including documentary filmmaker St. Clair Bourne and cinema scholar Teshome Gabriel, to discuss issues around Black representation in film and television. Caldwell’s film oeuvre and life’s work is built around psychic healing for Black people, a self-mandate formed after serving as a soldier in the Vietnam War.

There will be a post-screening conversation with Ben Caldwell, film programmer Jheanelle Brown, and scholar and multimedia/film producer Robeson Taj Frazier.

*Jack Smith (1932–1989) was a New York-based filmmaker, photographer, and actor known for his pioneering influence in experimental filmmaking and performance art. Smith moved to New York City in 1953, where he attended film classes at the City College of New York, finding employment as a photographer. He studied dance with Ruth St. Denis, direction with Lee Strasberg, and worked as an actor and assistant with Ken Jacobs before shooting his first film, Scotch Tape, in 1959. His best-known film, Flaming Creatures (1963), was confiscated by the New York Police Department and banned throughout the United States due to nudity and charges of obscenity. Smith never again created a finished artwork. His next film, Normal Love (1963), was often re-spliced as it ran, repeatedly reedited, and regularly awarded new titles such as Normal Fantasy, Exotic Landlordism of Crab Lagoon, and The Great Pasty Triumph. From the late 1960s into the 1980s, Smith focused on theater and performance, and combined live happenings with screenings of films and slideshows. Throughout his life, Smith pioneered a radical artistic practice that challenged the economic conditions of late capitalism, fixed definitions of gender and sexuality, and the production and dissemination of art itself. Smith’s influence pervades experimental filmmaking and performance art in the US to this day, and is present in the works of Andy Warhol, John Waters, Laurie Anderson, and Cindy Sherman, among countless others.
