*Widow’s Bay* is a quaint island town 40 miles off the coast of New England. But something lurks beneath the surface. Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) is desperate to revive his struggling community. There’s no Wi-Fi, spotty cellular reception, and he must contend with superstitious locals who believe their island is cursed. He wants these people to respect him. They don’t. They think he is soft and cowardly. And he is. But Loftis is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination. Miraculously, he succeeds: tourists are finally coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right. *“THE JOURNEY was born directly out of a collapsed project in 1982, when I tried to organize another antinuclear war film, to be funded by Central TV in England, and working with a number of peace groups across the UK. I felt that THE WAR GAME was out-of-date, and I was concerned about the escalating nuclear arms race, that was allied to the US foreign policy of a nuclear war that would be limited to Europe. My idea was to create a series of scenes, again depicting the consequences of a nuclear attack on Britain, on a larger scale than THE WAR GAME, that would allow citizens across Britain to express their concerns via their involvement in the production of this project. However, Central TV withdrew its funding, on the grounds that the budget was becoming too large, and the project collapsed. After rethinking the scale of the project into a more global film dealing with the general silence on the burgeoning nuclear arms race, I appealed for funding to a number of international TV channels. Without exception, every TV channel that I contacted refused, even though I was only requesting support for filming an ultra low-cost segment in each country, where I would ask local people what they knew and felt about the world arms race. *

*“During the time while I had no funding from the professional sector, I happened to be showing THE WAR GAME to the world’s oldest peace movement association, the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (SPAS), in Stockholm. In May 1983, during its 100th anniversary congress, SPAS unanimously decided to support fund-raising for a new film about the nuclear threat. Based in Stockholm, and with initial funding from SPAS, I immediately began to involve the network of friends and acquaintances that I had acquired over many years of travelling and lecturing, to build an international fund-raising drive for the new film, and to start research in those parts of the world where I would organize local productions groups for the actual filming.*

Commissioned for French TV in 1971, Pialat and screenwriter René Wheeler crafted a seven-episode, nearly 400-minute miniseries about the impact of World War I on a simple French family living in the countryside. Applying a naturalistic focus to their subject, Pialat and Wheeler capture both the historical scope of the conflict and the subtle ways that a small town’s quotidian routines and rituals—church, school, tavern—are indelibly touched by it. At the center of the richly detailed narrative are the Picards, headed by Albert (Pierre Doris), a game warden for the wooded estate of a local marquis (Fernand Gravey). **Megan O’Grady** is a critic and essayist whose writing draws from history, memoir, and the lyric essay. Her magazine and newspaper journalism on contemporary art and literature are often extensions of larger inquiries into representation and identity, explored through immersive reading and looking. The personal and social contexts of art and the way in which it negotiates cultural conversations over time are ongoing preoccupations. A frequent contributor to The New York Times, where she created the Culture Therapist column, her work also appears in The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, and Vogue, where she was once a contributing editor. Her book, How It Feels to Be Alive: Encounters with Art and Our Selves (Farrar, Straus & Giroux) considers the influence of books and art on our attention and imagination, their rippling impact on our self-conception and the way we move in the world.

**Carolina A. Miranda** is a writer in Los Angeles who covers the intersection of design and visual culture with politics and society. Until 2024, she was a columnist at the Los Angeles Times, where she reported on subjects such as museums and race, architecture and the pandemic, and the ways in which communities are rethinking the nature of monuments. She has produced stories for the Atlantic, the New York Review of Books, Artnews, Alta Journal and Fresh Air, and is a regular contributor for public radio station KCRW. She was a winner of the 2017 Rabkin Prize in Visual Arts Journalism and a recipient of the 2024 Andy Warhol Foundation Art Writers Grant. She is currently at work on a book about culture and authoritarianism in Chile.

Two hard-boiled career petty officers, Buddusky (Nicholson) and Mulhall (Otis Young), are detailed to take a young sailor, Meadows (Randy Quaid), from a Virginia Naval Base to a New Hampshire Naval Prison to serve an eight-year sentence for a trivial offense. Buddusky and Mulhall take a liking to Meadows and are determined to show him a good time on their journey north. Their escapades begin in Washington where they narrowly escape a bar fight, then get blind drunk in their hotel room. In New York, they tangle with some Marines, and in Boston, Buddusky takes Meadows to a brothel for his first sexual experience. Finally, after reluctantly turning in Meadows, Buddusky and Mulhall realize they are as much prisoners of their own world as Meadows now is of his.

Epic yet intimate, sweeping yet personal, THE HOUSE IN THE WOODS stands as one of the greatest achievements in the history of television as well as legendary director Maurice Pialat’s magnum opus. Commissioned for French TV in 1971, Pialat and screenwriter René Wheeler crafted a seven-episode, nearly 400-minute miniseries about the impact of World War I on a simple French family living in the countryside. Applying a naturalistic focus to their subject, Pialat and Wheeler capture both the historical scope of the conflict and the subtle ways that a small town’s quotidian routines and rituals—church, school, tavern—are indelibly touched by it. At the center of the richly detailed narrative are the Picards, headed by Albert (Pierre Doris), a game warden for the wooded estate of a local marquis (Fernand Gravey). He and his gentle wife, Jeanne (a heartbreaking Jacqueline Dufranne), raise two teenagers—Marcel (Henri Puff), at risk of being drafted; and Marguerite (Agathe Natanson), contemplating marriage—but also shelter three abandoned boys for the duration. Alexandre Estrela: *RedSkyFalls *is an installation that responds in real time to Earth’s internal rumblings – an artificial ecosystem with pre-digital sensibility. In *RedSkyFalls*, the mountainous landscape of a computer desktop serves as a habitat for aquatic plants and small luminous organisms with an animal intuition, the *Réplicas*, nestled inside the grooves of aluminium plates. Alexandre Estrela: *RedSkyFalls *is on view at the Portugal Pavilion of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia from **May 9 to November 22**, and is curated by Ana Baliza and Ricardo Nicolau.

Built from a calibrated mix of animal parts drawn from a dark cauldron, each *Réplica* borrows its vital pulse from the beat of a heart in a fly’s leg, the wave of a fish larva’s tail, and the quiver of a rat’s whisker. This patchwork of movement engraves onto the metal plate a linear fossil, a path where light generates a figure that continuously fulfills its hollow-graphic fate.

From **May 9-July 5,** REDCAT hosts a reproduction of one of the *Réplicas* of *RedSkyFalls*. In Los Angeles, as in Venice, the piece reacts to live seismic activity worldwide. Other *Réplicas* will be installed in San Francisco, California (CCA Wattis Institute); Lima, Peru (Museo de Arte de Lima, MALI); and Lisbon, Portugal (Galeria Zé dos Bois). The piece is installed in highly seismic geographies, where it responds to tectonic events with higher synchronicity, building an extended relational infrastructure.

Octogenarian filmmaker and “Queen of Sexploitation” Doris Wishman was working at a sex shop in Miami in the early 90s when she met experimental musician Tom Smith (To Live and Shave in L.A.), spurring a full-blown career revival that saw her honored at film festivals around the world and featured on HBO’s *Real Sex* and *Late Night with Conan O’Brien*. Intended to be her comeback movie, Dildo Heaven premiered at the New York Underground Film Festival just months before her passing in 2002 and then was never officially widely released until now. A charming shot-on-video sex comedy that defies all description–and surely the only movie by a senior citizen to feature an original rap theme song–*Dildo Heaven* (also known as *Desperate Desires*) is a fitting swan song for one of the most beloved cult filmmakers of all time.

Filmforum welcomes back Kevin Jerome Everson with a compelling array of recent work (2023-2026) (+ a short from 2016), ranging from observations of state bird-watchers to a powerful examination of the now shuttered Ohio State Reformatory in his hometown of Mansfield Ohio, to a short tribute to Gail Fisher, the first Black woman to win an Emmy.

It’s difficult to encapsulate the range of Everson’s prolific and varied films. He creates a wide array of distilled interpretations of aspects of Black life in the USA, in part producing an archive of lived experiences that have been erased in dominant culture. An artist, not a documentarian, he erases the line between staging and verité, and, through his films, insists on and deliberately enacts the presence and importance of family, labor, athletics, art-making, politics, and community. He listens to the echoes of people in empty spaces, re-valorizes almost-forgotten historical figures, and arranges performances for the camera of actions that are regularly carried out without being recorded or appreciated. **Kevin Jerome Everson** (b. 1965 Mansfield, OH, lives and works in Charlottesville, VA) is the Commonwealth and Ruffin Foundation Distinguished Professor of Studio Art, Director of Studio Arts, University of Virginia. Everson's art practice encompasses printmaking, sculpture, photography and film, including 13 features and over 300 solo & collaborative shorts. He is the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, Berlin Prize, Heinz Award, Alpert Award, and Rome Prize, & grants and commissions from Ford Foundation/Just Films, Knight Foundation, The Brick & Creative Capital among others. He is currently in post production on his first fiction feature Lowndes County.

The Jar (aka Charon) was released by Magnum Entertainment in 1984 and was omnipresent in video rental stores. While the film was shot in scope, the distributor released it in a butchered cropped presentation cutting out about half of the intended frame in a murky VHS transfer. Terror Vision has restored Charon/The Jar using a partial camera negative along with a print to finally offer director Bruce Toscano’s unique vision in all its beautiful, color drenched glory. Accompanied by a stunning synth score.

Dirty Looks presents the long-overdue U.S. release of Swedish trans-punk modern classic, *Something Must Break* (*Nånting måste gå sönder*), 2014, distributed by Altered Innocence. A fraught romance traces the transition of androgynous teen Sebastian (Saga Becker) and her crust punk boyfriend Andreas (Iggy Malmborg). Shot in gritty relief against the industrial edges of Stockholm. Andreas grows volatile, as this love stresses his het identity and Sebastian slips deeper into gender play. Written by Eli Levén and directed by Ester Martin Bergsmark (*She Male Snails*), this Golden Tiger-winning film is a bold work of contemporary Scandinavian queer cinema and based off the 2010 novel, *You Are the Roots That Sleep at My Feet and Keep the Earth in Place*.

Launched in 1974 in Los Angeles, Z Channel was one of the United States’ first pay cable stations. Z Channel’s prominence was solidified in 1980 when maverick programmer Jerry Harvey took over as head of programming. Z’s uniqueness was attributed to Harvey and his staff’s determination, diverse taste and encyclopedic knowledge of cinema. Harvey’s programming showcased a combination of classic, international, independent and Hollywood films. Z was the network first to develop programming innovations such as ‘director’s cuts’ and uniquely themed on-air festivals, while also airing many rare and never before seen exclusives and critically acclaimed films not in the mainstream.

### **ABOUT THE EVENT:**

Sergei Eisenstein travelled to Mexico December 1930 to experience firsthand its “geographical, ethnological, cultural and historical diversity” and to make a feature film. After shooting tons of beautiful 35mm footage, drawing hundreds of sketches and writing volumes of critical texts, he departed April 1932 without a completed project. This digital edition explores his unfinished cinema work available in partially edited fragments realized by others. The content and quality of the different releases vary greatly due to many factors none of which reflect poorly on Eisenstein. Viewed together with newly created interviews and reflections, the short and long films form a magnificent magical testament dedicated to the spirit of unbound creativity.

### **ABOUT THE FILMS:**

**“Time in the Sun,” 1940, Dir. Sergei Eisenstein, Grigori Alexandrov and Eduard Tissé, 61 Mins, Kino Lorber**

After Sol Lesser’s early compilations carved from the Mexican footage, “Time in the Sun” was a first attempt to do justice to what its director, Marie Seton, believed was Eisenstein’s vision. Having spent time with him in Yalta in 1934 and heard his rapturously account of the group’s experiences in Mexico, she resolved in 1938 “to reconstruct the dream in order that it might not be entirely lost.” Seton and her collaborators effectively molded the material into a conventional ethnographic documentary that foregrounded the exotic customs and costumes which Eisenstein had Tissé and Alexandrov film copiously. “Time in the Sun” largely follows the sequence of “novellas” or episodes set in different regions and eras that he had sketched for the benefit of his sponsors and the Mexican Government. Seton’s commentary also draws heavily on one of his key inspirations, Anita Brenner’s “Idols Behind Altars,” emphasizing the “Indian spirit” that had survived Spanish invasion and dictatorship. But with its conventional music, and tentative dramatization in the marriage sequence set in Tehuantepec and the climactic revenge drama at Tetlapayac Hacienda, it hardly seems to fulfill Eisenstein’s aspirations. We know he was bitterly disappointed when he finally saw it in 1946, but we are no closer to knowing what he might have created from this spectacular material. Based on Anita Brenner’s “Idols Behind Altars” (1929), Franz Blom’s “The Conquest of Yucatan” (1936), and writings researched by Samuel A. Datlowe and Marie Seton.

**Mexican Symphony: “Zapotec Village” / “Idol Of Hope” / “The Conquering Cross,” 1941, Dir. Sergei Eisenstein, 45 Mins, Kino Lorber**

Three rare travelogues “Zapotec Village,” “The Conquering Cross” and “Idol of Hope” are presented in the projection order indicated by Bell & Howell Filmosound Library in 1941. Missing are “Mexican Marches,” “Spaniard and Indian” and “Land and Freedom.” The entire series of six short, one-reel and two-reel, nonfiction ethnographic films were edited with footage recycled from the earlier THUNDER OVER MEXICO, EISENSTEIN IN MEXICO, “Death Day” and “Time in the Sun.” The travelogues were shaped into dapper and informative educational compilations, heavy on voice-over narration, that report on Mexican Indian life, cultural and historic backgrounds, and exotic scenic locations. Equally apparent throughout, and incorporated to great effect, appears much footage shot by Eisenstein but not previously seen or currently possible to view elsewhere. The hybrids could be projected, grouped together one-after-the-other, to form a composite feature-length documentary “Mexican Symphony.” The newly minted Eisenstein films play benignly symphonic in form and presentation.

**“The Disaster in Oaxaca,” 1931, Dir. Sergei Eisenstein, 16 Mins, Kino Lorber**

A month after Eisenstein’s group had entered Mexico in December 1930, the southern province of Oaxaca was devastated by a magnitude 8 earthquake which destroyed its capital. The Russians hired a plane to fly to Oaxaca, to film the damage and its aftermath, apparently hoping to capture material ahead of newsreel companies. The footage of shattered buildings, displaced inhabitants and the funeral of a child eloquently documented the scale of the disaster that killed over one hundred people. Quickly edited by Eisenstein, it was shown in Mexican theaters, and a copy was sent to the USSR, no doubt to prove that the Russians were gainfully employed after their fruitless year in Hollywood. Tissé’s filming may be largely functional, but Eisenstein’s montage pointedly contrasts the ruined houses of the rich with those of the poor, and includes several sequences that anticipate the religious themes which would preoccupy him during his time in Mexico: notably life-size religious statues being rescued from a ruined church, as if emphasizing their powerlessness, and a silhouetted angel sculpture hanging over a jagged void captioned “the angel of death.”

Based on a children’s essay adapted by famed Japanese screenwriter Yoko Mizuki in her first work for Naruse, Mother stars the legendary actress-director Kinuyo Tanaka as a beleaguered working class matron, whose self-sacrificing efforts to maintain her family during Tokyo’s postwar reconstruction make her a paragon of maternal virtue in the eyes of her teenage daughter Toshiko (Kyoko Kagawa). Toshiko idealizes her mother and the value system she embodies, a naive perspective that pleasantly lifts what in fact unfurls as a bitterly sad, episodic tale of slow-burn economic emmiseration. Anticipating the films of Hou Hsiao-hsien in its ironically sentimental vision of Confucian dissolution, Naruse’s film is a melodramatic tearjerker for the ages.

“After the Revolution, who’s going to pick up the garbage on Monday morning?” asked artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles in 1977. With that provocation, she shattered the divide between art and everyday labor, becoming the first artist in residence at New York City’s Department of Sanitation. Her collaborations with municipal workers injected art directly into the city’s bloodstream and redefined what creative practice could be. Inspired by Marcel Duchamp, Ukuleles pioneered the radical idea that routine maintenance—from changing diapers to picking up city trash to caring for the earth—could be acts of performance art.

Join us for a screening of *MAINTENANCE ARTIST*, the first feature documentary to explore this revolutionary public artist’s career. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, the film traces a half-century of social and artistic upheaval through the lens of essential labor and public art. *MAINTENANCE ARTIST* celebrates Ukeles’s call for a “Maintenance Revolution,” honoring the workers who keep our world running and the artist who insisted that their labor deserves to be seen.

The screening will be introduced by multimedia artist Debra Scacco, the first civic-appointed artist in residence in the City of Santa Monica’s Water and Waste divisions (2023–25).

Screening: *MAINTENANCE ARTIST*

Presented in conjunction with [*Realms of the Dharma: Buddhist Art Across Asia*](https://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/realms-dharma-buddhist-art-across-asia), Tenzin Phuntsog’s *Next Life* tells the story of a a Tibetan family in exile searches for moments of temporary happiness after their father is given an irrevocable diagnosis from a Tibetan doctor’s pulse reading. Through tender acts of care, quiet moments of intimacy, and memories of Tibet, the question of homeland surfaces: a place they cannot return to. *Next Life* moves through these moments gently, centering the Tibetan concept of Tse Chema—reincarnation—as a way of holding the cycle of life: birth, death, and rebirth and their karmic traces.

The program will begin with Phuntsog's new short work *Auras. *After *Next Life*, hear from Phuntsog in conversation with special guests and celebrate Tibetan Buddhist culture with offerings of Tibetan ceremonial practices from local Tibetan cultural practitioners.

Facing pressures to marry and having witnessed her two sisters’ own marital struggles, sightseeing bus guide Kiyoko (Hideko Takamine) strives for her own solitary independence, resisting suitors and openly expressing a disdain for men. Through a family of four siblings, each from different fathers, Naruse explores the suffocating family life of Kiyoko’s *shitamachi* household and its surroundings. LIGHTNING is a buildup of vignettes, events and occurrences, as Kiyo experiences the world around her—misfortune, family tragedy, interpersonal quarrels and the vulgarities of men—trying to make sense of a modern existence where the promise of happiness still comes second for women.
