**TWIN PEAKS, 1990, Paramount, USA**

A crime drama mixed with healthy doses of the surreal, this series is about FBI Agent Dale Cooper, who travels to the small logging town of Twin Peaks to solve the murder of seemingly innocent high schooler Laura Palmer. Almost nothing is as it seems, however, and the show’s sometimes eerie visuals, oddball characters and wild dream sequences drive the point home.

One of the boldest films of the postwar period to tackle homegrown fascism, the independent production, *The Burning Cross*, was the first anti-Klan film to explicitly depict Black Americans as victims of KKK terror on screen. A newly discharged veteran disgruntled by the changes he finds in his small town gravitates to the brutes of a Klan front group, the American Only Association. The brutal realism of the film’s depiction of the rhetoric and tactics culminates in the murder of a Black family burned in their home. The film, however, is not without compromise as an opening prologue restored in this version suggests that the Klan was originally founded by “men of good intentions” who would be betrayed by a corrupt, greedy few.

Released the year after both *Gentleman's Agreement* (1947) and *Crossfire* (1947) made antisemitism their explicit subject, this independently produced film noir takes a grittier approach to the social problem despite never mentioning the word, although the implications are clear. Directed by Austrian-born émigre John Reinhardt, *Open Secret* unfolds as a small town mystery with a newlywed couple investigating the disappearance of the friend they’ve come to visit. What they discover is a community so corrupted by hate even children join in victimizing anyone who isn’t “the right kind of people.” Ironically, a sweaty cabal stands behind it all with ambitions to take their violent campaign to the national political stage.

“What a Wonderful World: An Audiovisual Poem,” edited by Udo Kittelmann, is a sweeping odyssey into the depths of human experience, unfolding through film and video. Marking the first major presentation of works from the Julia Stoschek Foundation in the U.S., this audiovisual poem experiments with time-based media by placing contemporary video works in dialogue with silent films and early cinema classics. For the first time, a large-scale exhibition bridges these two universes, creating an unprecedented encounter across more than a century of visual storytelling.

Bringing one of the world’s leading collections of time-based art to a city defined by moving images sparks a rare conversation across disciplines. It dissolves the boundaries between visual art and cinema, museum and theater, white cube and black box. In doing so, it traces the evolution of visual storytelling over the past century, highlighting both the universality of human concerns and the shifting perspectives that shape their representation.

“What a Wonderful World” presents a wide range of groundbreaking works by artists such as Marina Abramović, Cyprien Gaillard, Arthur Jafa, or Lu Yang, alongside cinematic milestones by Luis Buñuel, Walt Disney, Alice Guy-Blaché, Winsor McCay, and Georges Méliès. Together, these works form a panoramic and layered portrait of humanity and history across 120 years: altogether ironic, sincere, critical and compassionate.

“What a Wonderful World” will unfold as an explorative journey, a cinematic mystery tour, a soul-stirring experience. It invites visitors to confront the secrets and fragilities of humanity while holding up a mirror to the state of the world today.

Scripted in collaboration with Marxist intellectual Murayama Tomoyoshi, AVALANCHE was a critical disaster; Naruse himself later called this merry-go-round of wily patrician courtship a failure, while assistant directors Kurosawa Akira and Honda Ishiro rarely mentioned their involvement in the film. AVALANCHE is by no means the auteur’s supreme visual accomplishment—the action is speech-sodden and the editing lethargic—yet this minidrama is striking in its liberal use of flashbacks, superimposition and thoughtful interior monologue. A semi-translucent tinted screen descends over the image every time a character enters subjective rumination, with dissolves and double exposures serving as two more inventive techniques with which Naruse effectively communicates idiosyncratic states of mind.

Over the course of a gruelling initiation process, he goes through every humiliation to please his “masters” — even as their treatment veers into increasingly fascistic, cult-like territory. Overt echoes of Stanley Kubrick’s A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and John Carpenter abound in De Leon’s claustrophobic college drama: a film that subverts expectation by casting college life in a sinister blood-red light.

*Femme Grotesquerie* is a collection of ten contemporary experimental animation short films showcasing femininity as something unruly, excessive, and emboldened. Featuring a variety of mediums including direct animation, stop motion, and digital 2D, these films depict worlds lived, imagined, subverted, or reclaimed. Here, femininity is not decorative or contained but pushed to its edges: raw, acute, tender, funny, and volatile. From the animated porcelain puppets of *On Weary Wings Go By* to the glitter-bombed 16mm of *Moon Cycle (2023-2024)*, these films stage feminine aesthetics and narratives as something to be wielded, distorted, reclaimed, and reimagined on the animators’ own terms.

A trailblazing (and enormously influential) hybrid of documentary and fiction, Shindô’s independently financed work of lyrical ethnography records the daily travails of a family—non-professional actors all, performing staged recreations of scenes from their own lives—scraping out a subsistence living through backbreaking toil on a remote, windswept island in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea. Almost entirely eschewing spoken dialogue and featuring an eloquent modernist score by Hikaru Hayashi, THE NAKED ISLAND is cinema stripped down to the barest of essentials, the widescreen black-and-white cinematography of Kiyomi Kuroda magnificent in its stark beauty, lending Shindô’s film something of the quality of a fable.

In a celebrated career spanning over four decades, Academy Award winner Gene Hackman (1930–2025) became recognized as one of the finest American actors of the New Hollywood era. A native Californian who relocated to New York to pursue acting in the late 1950s (with roommates Dustin Hoffman and Robert Duvall), Hackman toiled for over a decade off and on Broadway, and in dozens of small parts on film and television. By 1968, in between his star-making turns in the iconic features *Bonnie and Clyde* (1967) and *The French Connection* (1971), Hackman landed the lead role in the prestigious television anthology *CBS Playhouse*, in the installment, “My Father and My Mother.” 

Virtually unseen since its original broadcast, “My Father and My Mother” concerns a writer (Hackman) as he struggles to come to terms with decisions made in the care of his son with an intellectual disability. In seeking answers to his deep emotional crisis, the writer revisits his past, attempting to reconcile painful memories of his late parents (Ralph Bellamy, Jane Wyatt). An obscure footnote in Hackman’s oeuvre, the expressionistically staged drama (videotaped at CBS Television City) represents a creative high point in the actor’s television resume, revealing a performance of psychological depth uncommon to the small screen. In its review, the *Los Angeles Times* hailed Hackman as “outstanding,” noting the production was “... 90 minutes of thoughtful, well-played drama, of which there is much too little on TV these days.”

**Original Troublemakers:**

**Anna Siri** is an award-winning writer and producer who grew up in Central America, Mexico, Washington, DC, and Chicago before landing in California. She filled her head with knowledge at Northwestern University and UCLA, and when she&#x27;s not trying to get her projects off the ground, spends most of her time traveling to interesting places and writing at airport gates and other people&#x27;s kitchen tables.

**Janis Robertson** grew up among oak trees, rattlesnakes, and coyotes howling at night. After starting a stable career in San Francisco, she decided to blow it all up and spend a year hiking volcanoes in the Andes, climbing glaciers in Norway, assisting artists in the Outback. Janis made her way to LA, earning an MFA in screenwriting from UCLA and forging a career specializing in animation. Her short film, THE HEART ERRS, was selected for the newly-revived Spike and Mike&#x27;s Festival of Animation. 

**Kacie Tergesen** has been writing stories for as long as she can remember-- her childhood was full of sketchbooks brimming with cartoons and comic strips. Kacie&#x27;s experience includes writing for Disney Television Animation, development on a Mattel preschool series, and staffing on a female- led Netflix animated series (where she met Janis!). Currently, she is the lead Narrative Writer on the upcoming video game, “Five Mics”. Going forward, she&#x27;s excited to tell more stories that underrepresented viewers can see themselves reflected in. In her free time, Kacie enjoys eating eel sushi, trying to force "sweater weather" in the summer, and getting way too excited about a well-executed professional wrestling storyline.

When Senator Joseph McCarthy begins his foolhardy campaign to root out Communists in America, CBS News impresario Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) dedicates himself to exposing the atrocities being committed by McCarthy’s Senate investigation. Murrow is supported by a news team that includes long-time friend and producer Fred Friendly (George Clooney). The CBS team does its best to point out the senator’s lies and excesses, despite pressure from CBS’ corporate sponsors to desist.

### **ABOUT THE FILM: **

QUEEN KELLY opens in the imaginary European country of Cobourg-Nassau, sometime before the first World War, where the vain and cruel Queen Regina V (Seena Owen) obsesses over her feckless fiancé (Walter Byron), Prince “Wild” Wolfram. When the dissolute prince encounters an innocent but flirtatious convent girl, Patricia Kelly (Gloria Swanson), he falls in love. Desperate to see her before his upcoming wedding to the Queen, he kidnaps Kelly and brings her to his rooms in the palace. When the Queen discovers the lovers, she whips the nightgowned girl and throws her out into the night. After an unsuccessful suicide attempt, Kelly returns to the convent, where she receives a telegram, summoning her to the bedside of her dying aunt (Florence Gibson) in Dar-es-Salaam, German East Africa. There, the innocent young girl is shocked to find herself in a seedy bordello. On her deathbed, Kelly’s aunt begs her niece to wed the syphilitic brothel owner, Jan (Tully Marshall).

Donghwa (Ha Seongguk) is a fledgling poet in his thirties. He rejects material aspirations and seeks to lead a life dedicated to truth and beauty. On a lazy afternoon, he drives his girlfriend, Junhee (Kang Soyi), back to her parents’ home outside Seoul. In the driveway, they run into her father (Kwon Haehyo), who is strangely interested in Donghwa’s dinged up old car. He takes it for a spin around the block, then invites Donghwa to stay and meet the family: him, his wife (Cho Yunhee), who also writes poetry, and Junhee’s reclusive sister (Park Miso), who practices the gayageum, a traditional string instrument. They end up wiling away the day together, visiting a temple by the river, climbing the hill near the house, watching the sunset, and, sure enough, imbibing drinks. Egged on by Junhee’s dad, Donghwa gets progressively more drunk as the day advances. Finally, he makes a fool of himself at dinner. Then everything begins to unravel for the poet: his relationship, his art, his revolutionary ideals.

Shadow Kitchen returns to Coaxial Arts in March with a program highlighting the work of documentarian Aurora Brachman! Aurora is an Emmy Award-winning documentary director, producer, and cinematographer, named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film. A graduate of the Stanford MFA program in documentary (currently living in LA), Aurora’s work shines a patient light on intimate relationships particularly in the lives of queer people and people of color. In this month’s Shadow Kitchen we will have the pleasure of watching all of Aurora’s work to date. For over four decades, from 1944–1991, Albania was ruled by one of the most repressive dictatorships anywhere in the world. For most of that time, the Marxist-Leninist regime was led by Enver Hoxha, who ruthlessly suppressed any opposition and kept his fearful population isolated from the outside world. Throughout that period, Albanians could see images of themselves and their country only as represented in the fiction features and documentaries produced by the state-run New Albania Kinostudio. In 1993, two years after the end of the regime, Albanian American visual artist and photographer Elena Dorfman began regularly visiting her mother’s home country and in 2018 she was granted unprecedented access to the collection of the Albanian National Film Archive. The result of her archival research, Dorfman’s experimental feature documentary, *THE DREAM & THE LIE* brings scenes from the archive’s film holdings together in a widescreen triptych image that can feel both epic and intimate in scale all at once. A captivating exploration of how movies were used by the regime to construct a powerful national mythology that penetrated deep into daily life, *THE DREAM & THE LIE* is also a visually arresting example of how artists can creatively and productively engage with archival material. The UCLA Film & Television Archive is pleased to host Elena Dorfman at the Billy Wilder Theater for a screening of *THE DREAM & THE LIE* followed by an in person conversation with the Archive’s 2025 Artist-in-Residence Ariel West about the film and relationship between the artist and the archive.

Drawing from Tavares Strachan’s immersive excursions into hidden histories and speculative futures in the exhibition [*The Day Tomorrow Began*](https://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/tavares-strachan-day-tomorrow-began), mother and daughter design duo Aama Studio welcome us to a film salon where they will weave cinema, textiles, and personal memory to tell intergenerational stories. 

A tour of the exhibition, short films, and discussions will explore Black liberation, arcs of migration, and evolving identities, linking ancestral memory to possibilities of today and tomorrow.
