“What a Wonderful World: An Audiovisual Poem,” edited by Udo Kittelmann, is a sweeping odyssey into the depths of human experience, unfolding through film and video. Marking the first major presentation of works from the Julia Stoschek Foundation in the U.S., this audiovisual poem experiments with time-based media by placing contemporary video works in dialogue with silent films and early cinema classics. For the first time, a large-scale exhibition bridges these two universes, creating an unprecedented encounter across more than a century of visual storytelling.

Bringing one of the world’s leading collections of time-based art to a city defined by moving images sparks a rare conversation across disciplines. It dissolves the boundaries between visual art and cinema, museum and theater, white cube and black box. In doing so, it traces the evolution of visual storytelling over the past century, highlighting both the universality of human concerns and the shifting perspectives that shape their representation.

“What a Wonderful World” presents a wide range of groundbreaking works by artists such as Marina Abramović, Cyprien Gaillard, Arthur Jafa, or Lu Yang, alongside cinematic milestones by Luis Buñuel, Walt Disney, Alice Guy-Blaché, Winsor McCay, and Georges Méliès. For over four decades, from 1944–1991, Albania was ruled by one of the most repressive dictatorships anywhere in the world. For most of that time, the Marxist-Leninist regime was led by Enver Hoxha, who ruthlessly suppressed any opposition and kept his fearful population isolated from the outside world. Throughout that period, Albanians could see images of themselves and their country only as represented in the fiction features and documentaries produced by the state-run New Albania Kinostudio. In 1993, two years after the end of the regime, Albanian American visual artist and photographer Elena Dorfman began regularly visiting her mother’s home country and in 2018 she was granted unprecedented access to the collection of the Albanian National Film Archive. The result of her archival research, Dorfman’s experimental feature documentary, *THE DREAM & THE LIE* brings scenes from the archive’s film holdings together in a widescreen triptych image that can feel both epic and intimate in scale all at once. A captivating exploration of how movies were used by the regime to construct a powerful national mythology that penetrated deep into daily life, *THE DREAM & THE LIE* is also a visually arresting example of how artists can creatively and productively engage with archival material. Like a pod of dolphins leaping harmoniously through the waves, the SoCal tour of ***JOHN LILLY AND THE EARTH COINCIDENCE CONTROL OFFICE*** arrives April 2–5 through a collaboration between **Oscilloscope**, **Brain Dead Studios**, **7th House**, **Philosophical Research Society, **and **Ojai Playhouse****.**

Directed by **Michael Almereyda** and **Courtney Stephens**, this new documentary explores the life and work of the daring experimenter Dr. John C. Lilly, a scientist who dedicated his life to radical self-investigation and unlocking the mysteries of consciousness and communication. Lilly’s motto, “My body is my laboratory,” guided his pioneering and controversial research into the intelligence and language of dolphins and whales, as well as his explorations of psychedelics and sensory deprivation.

Alongside the documentary, 7th House and Brain Dead present two films shaped by his work: Mike Nichols’s DAY OF THE DOLPHIN (Saturday, 4/4 at Brain Dead Studios) and Ken Russell’s ALTERED STATES (Sunday, 4/5 at The Philosophical Research Society). Entrenched in the devastating reality of postwar Japan, Naruse’s masterpiece adapts Fumiko Hayashi’s final completed novel to trace the lives of two repatriated lovers reunited in the ruins of a defeated nation. The wartime affair of Tomioka, a married Forestry Ministry officer (Masayuki Mori) and typist Yukiko (Hideko Takamine) continues in the postwar rubble, but their bleak existence pales against the faraway romance that took place in French Indochina. Reluctant to leave his wife, the lecherous Tomioka comes and goes at his leisure to visit Yukiko, who clings to him desperately, propping up the vestiges of their long-lost passion over the course of years. Takamine’s heartbreaking performance is perhaps her finest hour, a role of sheer emotional magnitude that bears an agonizing love, drawn from the fading memory of what once was.

Kirk Bennett is sentenced to die for the murder of gorgeous actress Mavis Marlowe (Constance Dowling), but his wife (June Vincent) won’t give up trying to prove his innocence. She desperately enlists the aid of Marty Blair (Dan Duryea), a pickled pianist on the skids who happens to be the victim’s husband! The amateur sleuths go undercover as a performing duo, tracing clues to a ritzy Sunset Strip nightclub run by shady operator Marko (Peter Lorre). Bringing extra heat is Broderick Crawford as a dogged LAPD police captain. As usual in Woolrich stories, things aren’t what they seem—leading to one of the writer’s most memorable and unexpected climaxes. Known for his smarmy, villainous turns in many films of the period, here Duryea had his first role as a leading man in one of the era’s best adaptations of a novel by Cornell Woolrich, the undisputed master of noir fiction. Featuring fantastic art direction by Martin Obzina and inventive camerawork by Paul Ivano.

The first noir film to delve into the jazz world, BLUES IN THE NIGHT details the rise and inevitable fall of a St. Louis band. They land their big break when they get booked at a New Jersey nightclub, but the band’s leader, played by Richard Whorf, falls under the spell of the club’s *femme fatale* owner. It doesn’t take long for the other members to sour, setting off a chain reaction of jealousy, betrayal, and, eventually, murder. The supporting cast is superb, made up of familiar noir faces like Jack Carson, Howard Da Silva and Lloyd Nolan, while the screenplay by Robert Rossen makes good on the lyrics of the tragic, Oscar-nominated title song. Future director Elia Kazan has his biggest movie role as the band’s clarinetist.

The film draws direct inspiration from the pioneering work of Dr. John C. Lilly, whose real-life research into dolphin intelligence and communication captivated both the scientific community and the public imagination in the 1960s and ’70s. Lilly believed that dolphins possessed complex language and consciousness, and his experiments attempted to bridge the gap between species.

Released at the height of that cultural fascination, *DAY OF THE DOLPHIN* transforms Lilly’s radical ideas into a tense political thriller about the ethics of science, the limits of communication, and what might happen if we finally succeeded in speaking with another intelligent species. One of the best courtroom movies ever made. James Stewart plays an Upper Peninsula of Michigan lawyer drawn out of retirement to represent an Army Lieutenant charged with murder. The Lieutenant admits to the crime despite having no memory of committing it, and Stewart’s character is given the unenviable task of mounting an “irresistible impulse” defense. The contrast between the scandal and the wholesome, small-town setting in which it’s discussed is perfectly realized by director Otto Preminger. The director constantly pushed the boundaries of what could be depicted onscreen, and ANATOMY OF A MURDER represents the platonic ideal in terms of blending entertainment with social commentary. Stewart earned a fifth and final Oscar nomination for his work here, but he’s given stiff competition from George C. Scott, Ben Gazzara and jazz luminary Duke Ellington, who also composed the score.

THE CRIMSON CANARY boasts two things that make B-movies so much fun: a great premise and a short runtime. A trumpet player gets locked up after the lead singer of his band gets whacked. The trumpeter’s fiancée sets out to find the real killer with help from a jazz-loving detective. The film’s Black-led musical numbers have little to do with its plot, which made them easier to cut for Southern censors, but they make up several of the film’s best moments. Coleman Hawkins rips through spirited renditions of “Rifftide” and “Hollywood Stampede,” while blues/folk legend Josh White brings down the house with his signature tune “One Meatball.” Featuring a memorably nasty performance by Claudia Drake (DETOUR) as the murdered singer.
