As an artist based in Venice, California, Francisco is an important member of the local and national Chilean community. His work celebrates his country’s traditions of political muralism and serves as both a form of memory and an act of resistance.

Monteiro’s first fiction film — and masterpiece — “He Who Awaits Dead Men’s Shoes Dies Barefoot” shows an auteur inspired by the French New Wave (specifically Jean-Luc Godard) and introduces an alter-ego who would reappear in Monteiro’s João de Deus trilogy: Lívio, a young, broken-hearted aspiring artist (and beggar) whose dreams and innocence are violated by a country “that is a bottomless pit, an asshole one can’t escape from.” This poetic yet pessimistic letter to a nation suffocated by a decades-old fascist regime was banned, and remained unseen until Portugal’s 1974 Carnation Revolution.

One of the major achievements of twenty-first-century cinema thus far, Béla Tarr’s mesmeric parable of societal collapse is an enigma of transcendent visual, philosophical, and mystical resonance. Adapted from a novel by the celebrated writer and frequent Tarr collaborator László Krasznahorkai, Werckmeister Harmonies unfolds in an unknown era in an unnamed village, where, one day, a mysterious circus—complete with an enormous stuffed whale and a shadowy, demagogue-like figure known as the Prince—arrives and appears to awaken a kind of madness in the citizens, which builds inexorably toward violence and destruction. In thirty-nine of his signature long takes, engraved in ghostly black and white, Tarr conjures an apocalyptic vision of dreamlike dread and fathomless beauty.

A crucial participant and creator of experimental film in Los Angeles for close to sixty years, Morgan Fisher’s precise and beautiful films each address aspects of the processes of filmmaking with humor and conceptual rigor. As a member of the Los Angeles Independent Film Oasis (along with other key figures such as Pat and Beverly O’Neill, David and Diana Wilson, and Amy Halpern), he helped Los Angeles audiences have the opportunity to see essential films works in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His painting practice, which evolves from his same concerns with essential processes, color, and elements of personal history, has been featured in multiple exhibitions. Filmforum last hosted a one-person program with Fisher in 2004, and we’re delighted to honor him with some of the highlights of his cinematic oeuvre as part of our 50th anniversary celebration.

*Archive Talks *pairs leading historians and scholars with screenings of the moving image media that is the focus of their writing and research. Each program will begin with a special talk by the invited scholar that will introduce audiences to new insights, interpretations and contexts for the films and media being screened.

Between 1955 and 1964, filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock and composer Bernard Herrmann collaborated on eight films, including Vertigo (1958), North by Northwest (1959), Psycho (1960) and The Birds (1963), that reshaped American cinema. As the Cold War set in, censorship regimes loosened and television took its toll on the box office, Hitchcock responded to the times with stories and images that pushed Hollywood’s boundaries to attract new, younger audiences to the big screen. In Herrmann, Hitchcock found an erudite composer willing to take chances with him. Indeed, Hitchcock so trusted Herrmann's insights into the medium and music's role in it that he would adjust editing and even dialogue in key sequences to accommodate Herrmann’s scoring. In background and temperament they were unlikely partners but their work together produced some of the most enduring, visionary and influential cinema of the last century. Award-winning filmmaker and film historian Steven C. Smith dives deep into their creative relationship and the forces that shaped it in his latest book, Hitchcock and Herrmann: The Friendship and Film Scores That Changed Cinema. As part of this program, Smith will deliver an illustrated talk about these visionary collaborators before a screening of their iconic work on Psycho (1960) and a post-screening Q&A.

Paramount was so unnerved by the concept for Psycho — loosely based on a magazine article about serial killer Ed Gein — that Alfred Hitchcock agreed to front the cost of production himself to get it made. By the time Hitchcock brought a rough cut to Bernard Herrmann, however, even the director had lost faith in the project. “He was crazy,” Herrmann later recalled. “He didn’t know what he had.” But the composer had “some ideas.” Herrmann’s groundbreaking minimalist score of stabbing, sweeping strings elevates the stripped down dread of Hitchcock’s images in a visionary fusion like no other. Herrmann’s score made Psycho work and then Psycho changed cinema history.

Monteiro’s sardonicism and provocations were a constant throughout his career, often when the director appeared in his own films via his subversive alter-egos. Yet his biggest provocation was to shoot an adaptation of Robert Walser’s anti–fairy tale SNOW WHITE with, according to legend, his overcoat covering the camera lens. The result is both a humble acceptance of the artist’s limits in his attempt to fully materialize the scope of his artistic vision and, at the same time, an invitation to the audience to fill the blackness of this radical experiment with hope, light, and the fear that emanates from hearing a voice telling a tale in the intimacy of a dark room.

Active Cultures and Now Instant present **Seeds**, a three-part cinematic meditation on new beginnings, hidden power, and pivotal transformation.

Seeds are more than sources of nourishment. They hold ancestral memory: essential for preserving biodiversity, food sovereignty, and cultural heritage, resisting colonial displacement and destruction. These tiny vessels are also powerful symbols. Moving beyond the botanical, this artist-led film series delves into life&#8217;s eternal cycles, the strength of resilience, the wonder of germination, and the quiet wisdom found in dormancy.

The second film in the series, *Tending the Wild*, is selected by Andrea Jimenez of Herb Club LA. The screening will be followed by a conversation with Andrea and Joel Garcia, Director of Meztli Projects. Together, they will discuss the film’s themes in relation to their work with people and plants in the local community, as well as reflections on the past ten years since the film was made.

Lightstruck presents *Tacita Dean & Robert Nelson: Acting on Film* with Tacita Dean in person!

Lightstruck is honored to welcome artist Tacita Dean for a rare cinematic projection of her riveting 2015 film *Event for a Stage*, paired with Robert Nelson’s seldom seen 1982 short film *Hamlet Act*, both screening in their original 16mm format. These two remarkable films each explore the endlessly complex interplay between live performance and cinematic construction, as the camera, editing, and even the director’s presence complicate the illusion of narrative continuity, not to mention the presumptive reality that appears to hover at the margins.

Nelson’s film is a brilliant and unusual deconstruction of Hamlet’s play-within-a-play, activated into multiple, recursive layers of artifice through its employment of film and video to extend the original text’s nested complexity. Outtakes, retakes, and the typically unseen ragged edges of live performance carry as much meaning here as Shakespeare’s precise words and stage directions, giving us an exploded view of the highly constructed nature of cinematic performance.

Also invoking Shakespeare is actor Stephen Dillane in Dean’s breathtaking film, in which the volleying interactions between actor and director frame an almost molecular exploration of live performance and its resistance and acquiescence to being captured. Dean filmed the absolutely magnetic Dillane over four disparate performances, recomposing them into an explicitly filmic thread of continuity as he navigates between themes of memory, forgetting, family, artifice, and above all, the slippery power balance between actor and filmmaker at the heart of every cinematic performance.
