Among the most distinctive American debuts of the 1980s, maverick independent filmmaker Rob Tregenza’s haunting, formally audacious feature—beloved by Jean-Luc Godard and Jonathan Rosenbaum, yet never available on home video—now appears in a beautiful restoration.

Known for its elaborate structural gambit, Tregenza’s film is made up of nine scenes, each filmed in a single eleven-minute take in various locations in Baltimore, with elaborately choreographed camera movements and an intricately calculated mise-en-scene. We watch an aspiring, somewhat unstable writer (Ken Gruz) meets a series of strangers, with whom he is confronted with probing questions about life, religion, ethics, art and love. Perhaps infamously, the film’s sequence order was randomized by Tregenza, save for the first and last scenes—and yet “the possibility of accident and error hovers over every moment suspensefully, as in a jazz improvisation” (Rosenbaum). A radical achievement of film style, we are thrilled to present Tregenza’s film to a new audience.

In the scorching heat of the desert, where the ground is blistering and the air thick with pervasive sand, an infrastructure project unfolds in the unforgiving natural environment. The scale of this endeavour is so immense that the individuals navigating through it appear minuscule in comparison. Within the haze of sand and dust, those who have relocated for the construction of the infrastructure, returning from a day’s toil, find their way back to the tented area hastily assembled. As the roaming lens of the camera moves through the living area and returns to the expansive terrain where this massive engineering project is unfolding, the sun begins to set. Trucks and figures gradually disappear into the swirling winds and sand. At this moment, the camera’s eye, constantly worn down by the persistent dust, suddenly loses its usual ability to discern light and shadow. Nevertheless, it persists in its attempt to capture, to the point where it seizes the abstract interplay of light and shadow in this world. The light itself becomes akin to etched marks on the virtual canvas of digital imagery, leaving behind traces and lingering impressions. (Berlinale)

Over nearly two decades, China’s Zhou Tao has earned a venerated position as one of the most unique and surprising moving-image artists of his generation. One constant across Zhou’s practice is his ability to deploy basic filmic devices like composition, depth, and camera movement to play with perspective in ways that are not only visually dazzling but subtly political. Here, the artist recasts photogenic coastal locations from the Guangdong/Hong Kong/Macau Greater Bay Area famed for their social media virality by privileging the candid, the hazy, and the abstract over crisp poses engineered for likes. Constantly shapeshifting, with its scroll-like camera movements accented by a mix of on-site and sourced sound, *The Rib of the Greater Bay Area* is another transfixing entry in Zhou’s rich body of work. As mass media gets ever massier, and as the unbidden tide of its content/sewage has reached unimaginable, epic proportions, Lightstruck finds itself eagerly and urgently needing to present Craig Baldwin’s iconic experimental collage essay film *Sonic Outlaws* (1995) as a crucial antidote.

Exploring and illuminating the culture jamming and media appropriation work of Negativland, John Oswald, Tape-beatles, Barbie Liberation Organization, and Emergency Broadcast Network, *Sonic Outlaws* remains one of the defining (and most entertaining) informational/educational texts exploring what we as a citizenry might do to creatively defang and critically feed back into this unchecked, unregulated, unenlightening mass- and social-media hellscape. Even if it feels like throwing a single vial of vaccine at a virus the size of Vermont, we guarantee you will come away from this film inspired and activated to weather the daily screen-based onslaught that comprises our collective daily adventure.

Shot on eight different formats by longtime friend and collaborator Bill Daniel, Baldwin’s film is far more than a documentary or critical appraisal of a movement, as it actively engages in the sample-based, pastiche linguistics of radical collage that are Sonic Outlaws’ core focus. The film’s centerpiece is the storied lawsuit brought against Bay Area band Negativland, whose 1991 release “U2” badly pissed off Island Records and nearly got the band sued out of existence. But Baldwin intimately understands that the Negativland-U2 debacle is merely the most conveniently archetypal reference point for a much larger investigation of the underlying implications and overriding ideologies he and his subjects eloquently articulate throughout the film. By 1995, mass media had increasingly taken the form of an endless wave of unrequested content that engulfed society and its denizens, freely occupying real estate in everyone’s brains. By 2026, the word “exponential” doesn’t even begin to describe the scale shift we’re navigating, though it’s still essentially the same muck attempting to clog our neural pathways and overtax our pleasure/pain centers. But resistance isn’t futile, and response is required; *Sonic Outlaws* is a deeply insightful and engaging document of such responses, but also an ever-relevant argument both for their validity and their essential necessity.

Infamous for his arrest, trial and conviction - in the 1990s for his self-published comic, artist Mike Diana also made a string of homemade films. Starting with 8mm in the early '80s and graduating to video, Diana enlisted his own family and neighborhood kids in an array of bizarre, gross, and hilarious movies, to varied levels of completion.

1990's Baked Baby Jesus is a loud, unapologetic shot-on-video revolt against the downfall of American society. As if it was designed to be seen by Diana's enemies instead of his peers, the shorts marry together real abortion rally footage, a necrophiliac love story, and perhaps the most infamous sequence of all, a tour of the infant-only cemetery Babyland. “What are a Jewish girl’s three favorite things?” So asks a character in Chantal Akerman’s American Stories, her singular attempt to capture the essence of the modern American Jewish diaspora in all its hangdog melancholy and anecdotal bliss. A stark departure from the Jeanne Dielman filmmaker’s commitment to real-time duration, the film nevertheless embodies Akerman’s typical directness and absence of sentimentality, with an engaging series of monologues and hilarious sketches performed by Yiddish theater veterans and locals, brought together in an impressionistic stream. Conveying a genuine ethnographic curiosity, the film at times resembles Akerman’s similarly episodic Toute une nuit as filtered through Borscht Belt theatrics, with the idea of heritage constantly questioned and displaced among its characters. At a time when Jewish-American identity feels at its most fragmented, Histoires d’Amérique is notable as an authentic vision of Judaism without Zionism, and deserves to be appreciated as a film of Jewish folk tales par excellence. -Micah Gottlieb

**The Holy Mountain score:**

The soundtrack for Alejandro Jodorowsky’s 1973 surrealist masterpiece, The Holy Mountain, was composed by Jodorowsky himself, the late Ron Frangipane and jazz trumpeter Don Cherry. Ron turned Jodorowsky’s melodic fragments into orchestral arrangements and Don improvised music as the film was projected in silence &#8211; with a group reported to have been more than 100 musicians! Although the film only features synthesizer in a specific segment (track 17, entitled “F*ck Machine”), given the period in which the film was released, the utilization of the synthesizer underscores its emerging significance in the world of music and film scoring. After all, commercial synthesizers were only released five years prior to the film&#8217;s making.

The film was produced by the Beatles’ manager Allen Klein of ABKCO Music and was funded by John Lennon and Yoko Ono after they fell in love with Jodorowsky’s previous film, *El Topo*.
