We are excited to have filmmaker Andrew Bujalski and L.A.-based artist Blair Barnes in conversation following a short-and-feature pairing of *SITREP* and *COMPUTER CHESS*, the latter screening from a 35mm archival print. Both films were shot on the Sony AVC 3260, an analog tube video camera developed in the early 1970s which has a strangely beautiful black-and-white aesthetic, its shallow focus occasionally disrupted by blooms and smears of errant light. The filmmakers will discuss their distinctive approaches and inspirations behind using this idiosyncratic camera following the screening.

“COMPUTER CHESS was released in 2013, after being filmed entirely on three Sony AVC 3260’s which were custom-fitted with an extra BNC outlet to make a stable, recorded image possible. Ultimately, one of the 3260’s was the main workhorse, as the 2:1 signal in the other two were less reliable. [DoP] Matthias Grunsky would describe the camera as having a “…transcendental character,” which endures as a representation of the Sony AVC 3250. SITREP, which will be making its debut in 2026, uses the 3250 as its foremost camera, with the Sony FX6 as the digital intermediary. Filmed almost entirely inside of an abandoned dialysis center, the project makes work of worldbuilding through encompassing tape loops and mismatches in frequency and frame rate to produce varied flicker lines, whereas COMPUTER CHESS transforms a murky hotel into uncanny chess tournament sprawl. Beyond Bujalski’s precision in nailing the period, the 3260 itself is an apt co-conspirator in slipping the piece into an idiosyncratic otherworld.

“The common denominator is the ⅔ inch tube. The evident draw is in the utility of the tube camera, and it is also in how these projects use inverse methods to speak to time, whether as a phonetic marker in *sitrep*, or an approximation of period in *COMPUTER CHESS*. There is also chronological resonance with the 1969 AVC 3260 being used in 2013, and its successor, the 1974 AVC 3250 being used in 2025.” – Blair Barnes

Eventually, Popeye and Olive are brought together by Swee’ Pea (Wesley Ivan Hurt), an adorable foundling, and Popeye finally meets his dad, Poopdeck Pappy (Ray Walston). Director Robert Altman in no way tempered his trademark style for this big-budget family opus, crowding the screen with a variety of characters and allowing his cast to overlap as much dialogue as they want.

The Kongo Recalibration Cycle is an evolving body of films in which Kongo is not presented as a site of crisis, but as a living epistemology that recalibrates our relationship to memory, technology, ecology, and the imagination.

A night of films from Yole!Africa founder, filmmaker and mwalimu Petna Ndaliko Katondolo along with work from Yole!Africa filmmakers from Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo exploring matriarchal return. through choices in the making of the films and their approaches to storytelling.

Within the Soulfull-Soil Cinema form - Yole!Africa’s school and mode of filmmaking channelled by Mzee Petna, films follow the logic of Ejo-Lobi storytelling where the future of the past is braided into the past of the future, weaving rhythms across dimensions. Where images are not cut but braided into the logic, weaving in the Murago way, with soulful-soil cinema principles.

The program includes special advance screenings of films from Goma speaking from a matriarchal perspective and legacy, through filmmaking choices and approaches in storytelling. In addition, there will be previews of an additional upcoming film from Petna Ndaliko Katondolo, as well as films from the Rhythmic Dream Architextures course taught by Matazi Weathers Rhythmic Dream Architextures as part of Yole’s new Cinema Celluloid Department.

After the screening, join Petna Ndaliko Katondolo and Matazi Weathers, in a community circle in the Yole!Africa form moderated by Jheanelle Brown for conversation and reflection on the program’s films and Yole!Africa’s work.

In this chilling and groundbreaking documentary, former Indonesian death squad leaders reenact their real-life mass killings in the style of various film genres. As they recreate their past atrocities, the line between reality and performance blurs, exposing the lingering impact of Indonesia&#8217;s 1965-66 anti-communist purge and the unsettling psychology of its perpetrators.

A cop who loses his partner in a shoot-out with gun smugglers goes on a mission to catch them. In order to get closer to the leaders of the ring he joins forces with an undercover cop who&#8217;s working as a gangster hitman. They use all means of excessive force to find them.

Naruse harbored a special affection for this rural farce starring the great comic actor Kamatari Fujiwara, familiar to American audiences as the cravenly cynical peasant Manzo in Kurosawa’s SEVEN SAMURAI. As written by Naruse himself, Hyoroku (Fujiwara), a lowly member of a backwoods kabuki troupe, brings buffoonish pomposity to his role as the front legs of the act’s puppet horse. When a drunken patron falls on the horse’s head, the company replaces it with the real McCoy, unceremoniously demoting Hyoroku and his sidekick Senpei to stable boys. Tinged with nostalgia for a pre-modern popular art and vanishing provincial folkways, Naruse’s film conjures a timeless aura as if to ward off the distant reality of war.

A hard-hitting commentary on class struggle and machismo set amid the dockyards of Alexandria in the immediate aftermath of Egypt’s 1952 revolution, this feverish social-realist melodrama stars the great Omar Sharif in one of his earliest film roles. He delivers an intense performance as Ragab, a sailor who must leave behind his beloved Hamidah (Faten Hamama, at the time Sharif’s real-life wife) for a long voyage at sea. When he returns after three years and discovers that she has taken up with the wealthy Mamdouh (the heartthrob Ahmed Ramzy), the volatile Ragab fights to win her back.
