The beautiful Rana (Parvaneh Massoumi) hopes the stray vessel has brought back her husband, who disappeared a year ago out on the sea. But the only passenger is Ayat (Khosrow Shojazadeh), a wounded stranger with no memory of how he ended up in this land. After gradually proving himself as a member of the community, Ayat upsets the locals by marrying Rana, and then grows increasingly paranoid about intermittently glimpsed figures that vow to avenge his misdeeds from a forgotten past.

In the scorching heat of the desert, where the ground is blistering and the air thick with pervasive sand, an infrastructure project unfolds in the unforgiving natural environment. The scale of this endeavour is so immense that the individuals navigating through it appear minuscule in comparison. Within the haze of sand and dust, those who have relocated for the construction of the infrastructure, returning from a day’s toil, find their way back to the tented area hastily assembled. As the roaming lens of the camera moves through the living area and returns to the expansive terrain where this massive engineering project is unfolding, the sun begins to set. Trucks and figures gradually disappear into the swirling winds and sand. At this moment, the camera’s eye, constantly worn down by the persistent dust, suddenly loses its usual ability to discern light and shadow. Nevertheless, it persists in its attempt to capture, to the point where it seizes the abstract interplay of light and shadow in this world. The light itself becomes akin to etched marks on the virtual canvas of digital imagery, leaving behind traces and lingering impressions. (Berlinale)

Over nearly two decades, China’s Zhou Tao has earned a venerated position as one of the most unique and surprising moving-image artists of his generation. One constant across Zhou’s practice is his ability to deploy basic filmic devices like composition, depth, and camera movement to play with perspective in ways that are not only visually dazzling but subtly political. Here, the artist recasts photogenic coastal locations from the Guangdong/Hong Kong/Macau Greater Bay Area famed for their social media virality by privileging the candid, the hazy, and the abstract over crisp poses engineered for likes. Constantly shapeshifting, with its scroll-like camera movements accented by a mix of on-site and sourced sound, *The Rib of the Greater Bay Area* is another transfixing entry in Zhou’s rich body of work. Douglas Fairbanks reaches the height of his swashbuckling career in THE BLACK PIRATE (1926), one of silent cinema’s most spectacular adventure films. Produced at the peak of Fairbanks’ international popularity, the film follows a daring nobleman who infiltrates a band of pirates to avenge his father’s murder, leading to a succession of breathtaking action sequences staged with Fairbanks’ trademark athleticism and charm.

Equally remarkable is the film’s groundbreaking use of two-strip Technicolor. One of the earliest feature films photographed entirely in the process, THE. BLACK PIRATE demonstrated that color cinematography could become an integral part of dramatic storytelling rather than a novelty. This presentation features a beautiful new restoration that recreates the film’s original color design, allowing modern audiences to experience one of the silent era’s greatest technical and artistic achievements as it was originally intended.

Directed by Roland West from the enormously successful Broadway play by Mary Roberts Rinehart and Avery Hopwood, THE BAT (1926) helped define the “old dark house” mystery long before it became a Hollywood staple. A mysterious masked criminal known only as “The Bat” stalks the corridors of an isolated mansion where hidden wealth, suspicious houseguests, secret passageways and unexpected murders keep audiences guessing until the final moments.

West directs with extraordinary visual flair, using expressive lighting, elaborate camera movement and striking Art Deco-inspired production design to create an atmosphere of mounting suspense. The film’s shadow-filled imagery would prove enormously influential on later horror and mystery films, while its combination of suspense and humor established a formula that filmmakers would revisit for decades.

Presented in the West Coast premiere of a new restoration during its centennial year, THE BAT remains one of silent cinema’s most stylish and entertaining mysteries, a masterfully crafted thriller whose influence can still be felt throughout the genre today.

In February 2023, a Eurasian Eagle-Owl named Flaco escapes from the Central Park Zoo and sets off on a magical odyssey through the island of Manhattan. Flaco answers the call of the wild – and discovers he was wild inside all along. *Wild Inside* is an underdog story of resilience and self determination as Flaco the Owl beats the odds and accomplishes the impossible. Jason is back for vengeance in the most sprawling and substantial of Bryan Fortin’s original Zones of Evil productions! Growing out of the 1980s fanzine and cable access program of the same name, Peabody, MA-based Fortin and collaborators Jim Demers and Steven Mallas (comprising FDM productions) produced a score of feature-length projects that never aired outside of Cablevision. Though their meditative *Happy Halloween* series is better known, *Jason’s Curse* is a more concise endeavor, full of atmospheric locations, impressive night-lensed chase scenes,and plenty of inventive kills.

Fortin plays Rick, who, alongside his friend David (Brian Less), confronts Jason’s past killing spree that landed his sister in an asylum. As with other FDM productions, a lot of time is spent in Fortin’s house (standing in for a cabin) as he discusses the plot details and his character’s history, while a series of bloody kills occur outside. These moments are imbued with quiet charm in Bryan’s world, proving that he and his team created the peak of cable access programming experience. Despite the fact that there are rarely more than two people onscreen at one time, Fortin manages to transcend the sophomoric fan film heap and deliver a perfect bit of seasonal fun. Returning to a life she barely recognizes proves unsettling enough, but when a series of grisly murders begins, old suspicions and new fears quickly surface. Produced and directed by William Castle from a screenplay by Psycho novelist Robert Bloch, Strait-Jacket is a deliciously lurid blend of psychological suspense, gothic horror, and dark humor, with Crawford commanding the screen as a woman whose grip on reality may be slipping once again. Castle surrounds Crawford and Baker with a colorful supporting cast, including George Kennedy, Leif Erickson, and Rochelle Hudson, while milking the story for shocks and sinister surprises. Long believed lost, “Help Yourself” (1927) stars Swedish-born comedian El Brendel as a hungry drifter whose search for a meal unexpectedly leads to romance. Produced by future Hollywood legends Joe Pasternak and William R. Wilkerson before either achieved fame, the film was never released, and its negative was eventually destroyed. Surviving elements, discovered more than ninety years later, have now been painstakingly reconstructed by USC HMH Foundation Moving Image Archive Curator Dino Everett and film collector Louie Despres, making this screening the first opportunity in nearly a century to experience this forgotten comedy.

The world premiere restoration of THE SLANDERERS (1924), a previously lost feature preserved from the only known surviving copy, a 16mm print recently discovered in the USC HMH Foundation Moving Image Archive. Directed by Nat Ross, the film follows a World War I veteran who returns home only to find himself confronting the corruption, rumor and small-town bureaucracy that threaten both his reputation and his future. Blending timely social commentary with compelling drama, THE SLANDERERS explores how quickly false accusations can overwhelm truth, a theme that remains remarkably relevant a century after the film was made.

Bitzer completed production while transitioning from Biograph’s legendary New York studio to California, where the American film industry would soon establish its permanent home.

The plot revolves around Jack Stone (Richard Dix), whose father (Harry Beresford) vowed that he would not leave Colton College until his team defeats its archrival, State University. Unfortunately, they lose, year after year after year. Rather than graduate, the father keeps his promise and remains enrolled for the next 27 years. By the 1920s, he is an aging perpetual student attending classes alongside his son Jack, who becomes the school’s new quarterback. Jack must not only win the championship game but also evade attempts by the State team to derail his football success while pursuing a romance with Louise Mason (Esther Ralston).

THE DEVIL’S CIRCUS marks Danish filmmaker Benjamin Christensen’s debut in America. The director of such classics as HAXAN (1922) and SEVEN FOOTSTEPS TO SATAN (1929) weaves his signature thematic motifs around the striking image of a grim, devilish figure pulling the strings of fate. The film tells the gripping story of Mary, played by the radiant Norma Shearer, a naive young woman from the country who is befriended by Carl, a professional pickpocket, played by Charles Emmett Mack. When Mary finds employment in a circus, Carl is arrested but promises to go straight for her sake. However, the corrupt world under the Big Top threatens Mary’s safety and innocence. Despite its breathtaking tragedies, the film is ultimately a deeply moving ode to the redemptive power of love.

Dubbed “The Ed Wood of the 21st Century”, Des Plaines, Illinois based former marine and Golden Gloves boxer turned gonzo filmmaker David “The Rock” Nelson has been churning out his bizarre and mesmerizing brand of backyard monster movies for over 30 years. Often playing multiple onscreen roles simultaneously while utilizing local friends, his parents, and his girlfriend Janet Okulanis as his co-stars, “The Rock” has amassed a robust SOV filmography and persevered undaunted in the face nonexistent funds, unfavorable reviews, and outdated video equipment. Nelson’s work represents a singular viewing experience like no other: landing somewhere between the earnest monster romps of Paul Naschy and the eccentric video diaries of George Kuchar; where the filmmakers’ real life day to day activities and interactions sometimes outweigh the forwarding of the narrative. Over 4 1/2 years in the making and clocking in at a staggering 2 1/2 hour runtime, The Devil Ant from 1999 is considered by many to be Nelson's magnum opus and mission statement. When the sardine gobbling mad doctor (Nelson) and his absent minded assistant (also Nelson) dump a pail of nuclear waste into the nearby water supply, an ordinary ant (Nelson’s infamous dime store rubber toy) is transformed into an unstoppable, marauding menace! Lew Klahr is a Los Angeles based filmmaker and collage artist who uses found images and sound to explore the pastness of the present where the intersection of memory and history, both personal and cultural, occurs. He began creating his uniquely idiosyncratic films in 1977. These have screened extensively in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Included 3 times in the Whitney Biennial and a Guggenheim Fellow, Lewis Klahr teaches in the Theater School of the California Institute of the Arts.

Nothing else has ever looked or felt like director René Laloux’s animated marvel FANTASTIC PLANET*,* a politically minded and visually inventive work of science fiction. The film is set on a distant planet called Ygam, where enslaved humans (Oms) are the playthings of giant blue native inhabitants (Draags). After Terr, kept as a pet since infancy, escapes from his gigantic child captor, he is swept up by a band of radical fellow Oms who are resisting the Draags’ oppression and violence. With its eerie, coolly surreal cutout animation by Roland Topor, brilliant psychedelic jazz score by Alain Goraguer and wondrous creatures and landscapes, this Cannes-awarded 1973 counterculture classic is a perennially compelling statement against conformity and violence.

Mœbius), THE TIME MASTERS is a visually fantastic foray into existentialist space adventure. After his parents are killed on the dangerous planet Perdide, young Piel (voiced by Frédéric Legros) survives by maintaining radio contact with Jaffar (Jean Valmont), a pilot transporting the exiled Prince Matton (Yves-Marie Maurin) and Princess Belle (Monique Thierry) from their former kingdom. What begins as a romantic comedy builds toward one of Lloyd’s most exhilarating finales, featuring an unforgettable runaway wedding procession through the streets of Los Angeles.

Produced during the height of Lloyd’s remarkable run of silent features, FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE perfectly showcases his unique screen persona: optimistic, resourceful and irresistibly likable. A look at commercial 3-D images created during the silent era. Promotional stereo photographs featured behind the scenes looks at movie stars and productions, such as Lon Chaney in The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of the Opera. And stereo cards for penny arcade machines featured many silent movie actors including Ben Turpin, Snitz Edwards, and Chaplin impersonator Charles Amador, who performed on screen as Charlie Aplin. Harold Lloyd and Douglas Fairbanks even commissioned their own personal stereo photographs during the filming of their movies. The presentation will also offer the first public exhibition of recently discovered 3-D photos taken on the set of a 1920 western picture.
