As part of Whammy’s SOV September, The Philosophical Research Society’s 7th House Screenings & LA Filmforum are proud to present a rare theatrical screening of STRANDED IN CANTON (1974/2005), quintessential American photographer William Eggleston’s mesmerizing, unruly and disarmingly intimate lone foray into filmmaking. Armed with a then-new Sony Porta-Pak, Eggleston spent 1974 plunging headlong into the bars, back rooms and back roads of Memphis, New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta. Friends, family, artists, musicians, night owls and assorted eccentrics drift in and out of view, caught amid the boozy, volatile, freewheeling energy of the ’70s South. Nearly thirty years later, Eggleston and filmmaker Robert Gordon fashioned the long-unseen footage into a strange, hypnotic portrait of a vanished Southern world.

In place of the blazing color and immaculate, observational compositions of his iconic photographs, Eggleston gives us wobbly, ghostly, grain-clouded black-and-white video: faces emerge from pitch darkness, the camera pushes within inches of its subjects as drunken monologues, musical performances, eruptions of violence and moments of unexpected tenderness careen around it. The same eye that transformed the everyday American South into some of the most indelible photographs of the last century is unmistakably present, but here everything moves, talks back and threatens to spill out of the frame. Among those caught in its orbit are blues legend Furry Lewis and Big Star’s Alex Chilton, filmed amid the same Memphis scene that gave rise to the band—and in the very year Eggleston’s The Red Ceiling appeared on the cover of their sophomore album Radio City. Decades later, the film so captivated Spiritualized’s J Spaceman and John Coxon that they composed an original score for it in 2015. (Note: this screening features the film’s original soundtrack, not the Spaceman/Coxon score.)

Raw, funny, unnerving and at times almost hallucinatory, STRANDED IN CANTON is a startling moving-image counterpart to Eggleston’s photography, rarely seen and returning to a Los Angeles screen for the first time in 16 years.

Brain Dead Studios presents our first-ever O.V.A. Night, a surprise screening of obscure anime rarely seen on the big screen.

O.V.A. (Original Video Animation) emerged in Japan during the home video boom of the 1980s. Released directly to home video, OVAs gave animators the freedom to work outside the usual restrictions of television and theatrical releases, opening the door to stranger stories, bigger ideas, and imagery that could never have made it onto TV. The result was some of the most ambitious, violent, experimental, and downright bizarre anime of the era.

Many of these titles have never been properly restored or given a theatrical release, and we think they deserve to be played big, played loud, and seen with a crowd.

A ravenous, predatory creature from deep space arrives on Earth and unleashes its insatiable appetite for flesh and blood on an unsuspecting, seaside town. Assigned by his superiors to hunt down the creature, former starship commander David Riggs (Greg Scott) recruits the assistance of a reluctant psychic investigator named Sandra Lynn (Kathy Monks), who’s been haunted by gruesome, clairvoyant visions of the monster savagely mutilating the towns’ local teenagers. When her innocent young daughter is killed, Sandra tracks the beast to its underwater lair in a kamikaze attempt to detonate a thermonuclear termination device and obliterate the creature (and herself) once and for all.

A mind-shattering, analog splatterfest that blissfully unfolds amidst the late ‘80s shopping malls, rock clubs, and shorelines of Ocean and Monmouth County, NJ, **Flesh Eaters from Outer Space** (aka *A Taste for Flesh & Blood*) marked the headbanging SOV feature debut of legendary Neptune, New Jersey-based writer/director Warren F. Disbrow (*Invasion for Flesh and Blood*, *Scarlet Moon*). In the tradition of *Humanoids from the Deep* and *Nightbeast*, big teeth, big hair, and big riffs abound in this regional, “man in a suit” monster epic that’s bursting at the seams with jaw-dropping nudity and practical gore FX. A 1980s love letter to the monster movies of the ‘50s featuring homespun dismemberments, disembowelments, and decapitations at every turn, Disbrow’s Flesh Eaters from Outer Space remains one of the seminal ‘80s horror features that would help put New Jersey on the map as a hub for micro-budget, shot on video filmmaking in the decades to come. Acropolis Cinema presents *Little Boy*, by James Benning. 2025. Director in person!

James Benning’s mesmerizing new film spans decades of U.S. history with simple and seemingly minor gestures. Foregrounding its own structural form, *Little Boy* shows us a series of prefabricated toy models being painted in close-up, accompanied by the rallying cries of folk and pop standards, followed by images of the models’ final construction overlaid with passages of political oratory, from voices inspiring or nefarious. The cumulative image is one of a society doomed to cycles of domestic decline and implicated in international terror in the name of “peace-making” interventionism. A companion piece to *American Dreams: Lost and Found*, Benning’s 1984 film composed entirely of baseball card memorabilia, *Little Boy*—its title recalling the lyrics from Pete Seeger’s “What Did You Learn in School Today?”—is an American epic in miniature.

Fight Club

*Stepney Western* is an experimental documentary by Harry Lawson, made in collaboration with a group of young inner-city horse riders from Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Recasting their neighbourhood as the Wild West, the film sits at the porous boundary between fact and fiction, combining recontextualised iPhone clips shot by the riders and archival material with Lawson’s own footage. It is loosely centred on their Alternative Provision programme — a unique alternative for young people in England who struggle in mainstream education settings. 

*In With Both Feet* is a unique oral history of the stables, written by Kathryn Scanlan in response to the film. The audience will listen to a recording of Scanlan’s piece, read by Paula Archer, one of the founders of Stepney Bank Stables. What emerges is a kind of collective portrait, made up of edited fragments of speech from Lawson’s rushes.

The screening and reading will be followed by a conversation between Lawson and Scanlan.

Praised for her moving and emotive onscreen presence, Ruan’s private life, which was frequent fodder for the vicious Shanghai tabloids, began to mirror the melodramas which brought her fame, culminating in her suicide at age 24. Kwan and Cheung paint a kaleidoscopic yet intimate portrait of the ill-fated actress, deftly blending lush period drama, archival footage and metatextual documentary sequences of Cheung reflecting on Ruan’s legacy. A college student goes undercover as a stripper and male hustler to infiltrate the crime duo responsible for his brother's death.

Twin Cheeks feels like if John Waters picked up a video camera and made a Twin Peaks homage and sprinkled in a dash of Rainer Werner Fassbinder for good measure. Filmed in a lot of the same locations David Lynch used but with the absurdity turned way up. Kelly Hughes is an unsung legend of the underground and we are so happy to bring his work to more people. Negativland's complex chaos of plunderphonics poses both serious and silly questions about the nature of sound, media, technology, control, propaganda, power and perception in the global village. Negativland continue to be pioneers of art in the electric age, and the medium reveals that any message is all in our heads.

Negativland is an American experimental music band that originated in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1970s. The core of the band consists of Mark Hosler, David Wills, Peter Conheim and Jon Leidecker. Negativland has released a number of albums ranging from pure sound collage to more musical expositions. They perform at 2220 Arts on Friday night, Sept 18.

After his young lover, Gitone (Max Born), leaves him for another man, Encolpio (Martin Potter) decides to kill himself, but a sudden earthquake destroys his home before he has a chance to do so. Now wandering around Rome in the time of Nero, Encolpio encounters one bizarre and surreal scene after another. He’s invited to a poetry reading that ends in violence; is taken hostage by pirates; and is even forced to battle a gladiator disguised as a minotaur in a giant labyrinth.

Roxy is an anthropology major at her local university as well as a DJ for the college’s radio station. One night, a listener calls into Roxy’s show to share a local legend about a hidden cemetery in the woods where a group of Friars were killed and buried because the townspeople believed they were vampires. Thinking this would be a great topic for her thesis, Roxy convinces her friends in a punk band to head out into the woods for a weekend of camping in order to find the cemetery. After discovering that the legend of the cemetery is in fact real, blood is accidentally spilled on the hallowed ground, and the undead Friars rise from their graves in search of fresh victims to satisfy their blood lust.

The band&#8217;s leader has since died, and now it&#8217;s up to his grandson, Billy Shears (Peter Frampton), to carry on the group&#8217;s traditions. To this end, he recruits the Henderson brothers (Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb, Maurice Gibb) to help him defend the group&#8217;s magic instruments from nefarious crook B.D. Hoffler. It&#8217;s a bubblegum campfest head trip that is best experienced on the big screen with a crowd!
