Lightstruck presents *Tacita Dean & Robert Nelson: Acting on Film* with Tacita Dean in person!

Lightstruck is honored to welcome artist Tacita Dean for a rare cinematic projection of her riveting 2015 film *Event for a Stage*, paired with Robert Nelson’s seldom seen 1982 short film *Hamlet Act*, both screening in their original 16mm format. These two remarkable films each explore the endlessly complex interplay between live performance and cinematic construction, as the camera, editing, and even the director’s presence complicate the illusion of narrative continuity, not to mention the presumptive reality that appears to hover at the margins.

Nelson’s film is a brilliant and unusual deconstruction of Hamlet’s play-within-a-play, activated into multiple, recursive layers of artifice through its employment of film and video to extend the original text’s nested complexity. Outtakes, retakes, and the typically unseen ragged edges of live performance carry as much meaning here as Shakespeare’s precise words and stage directions, giving us an exploded view of the highly constructed nature of cinematic performance.

Also invoking Shakespeare is actor Stephen Dillane in Dean’s breathtaking film, in which the volleying interactions between actor and director frame an almost molecular exploration of live performance and its resistance and acquiescence to being captured. Dean filmed the absolutely magnetic Dillane over four disparate performances, recomposing them into an explicitly filmic thread of continuity as he navigates between themes of memory, forgetting, family, artifice, and above all, the slippery power balance between actor and filmmaker at the heart of every cinematic performance.

“What a Wonderful World: An Audiovisual Poem,” edited by Udo Kittelmann, is a sweeping odyssey into the depths of human experience, unfolding through film and video. Marking the first major presentation of works from the Julia Stoschek Foundation in the U.S., this audiovisual poem experiments with time-based media by placing contemporary video works in dialogue with silent films and early cinema classics. For the first time, a large-scale exhibition bridges these two universes, creating an unprecedented encounter across more than a century of visual storytelling.

Bringing one of the world’s leading collections of time-based art to a city defined by moving images sparks a rare conversation across disciplines. It dissolves the boundaries between visual art and cinema, museum and theater, white cube and black box. In doing so, it traces the evolution of visual storytelling over the past century, highlighting both the universality of human concerns and the shifting perspectives that shape their representation.

Set against the vast farmlands he once worked on with his son, the film’s haunting soundscape and a capella cantos transform mourning into landscape, revealing how memory reshapes what remains and how loss echoes through time and place.

Clémenti’s penultimate screen role, for Portuguese iconoclast João César Monteiro, is a catalyst within a narrative hall of mirrors with a theatrical company fanatically rehearsing August Strindberg’s Inferno at its center. Featuring multiple timelines, a battle of wills between God and Lucifer, an obsession with John Wayne’s swaggering pelvis, and a dedication to Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, the film is equal parts majestic and perverse, as Monteiro teeters to the edge of theatrical abstraction. For Clémenti, who fully retreated from the film industry in the 1980s—pouring his energy into theater, his own films, radio programs, and even acting in student projects at La Fémis—Le Bassin ’s auteurist rigors were a return to an earlier time. “You have to know how to disappear to be reborn,” he told Les Inrocks in 1998, “My encounter with Monteiro was magnificent […], with him, it was like with [Luis] Buñuel: we understand each other instinctively, without even speaking.” This renaissance was, tragically, also a swan song. That year, Clémenti was diagnosed with liver cancer, from which he passed away in 1999 at age 57.

In her riveting, visually striking adaptation of the memoir of Greek writer Giannis Atzakas, writer-director Eleni Alexandrakis tells the searing story of Atzakas and his experience growing up in these harsh institutions all the while unable to shake the memory of his rebel father and his longing for — and aversion to — a reunion.

Filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished, drawing on footage of Baldwin as well as archival snapshots of America through the Black lens. Poisoned water, damaged earth, and elevated cancer rates: environmental clean-up sites are one of the legacies left behind by the American chemical and munitions manufacturer “Olin Corporation”. Its other legacy was the John M. Olin Foundation, which donated millions to pushing a conservative agenda from the 1970s to the early 2000s. As a by-product or direct effort, the Olin Corporation and other conservative think tanks have had a deep and unsettling impact on American politics, family values, and women’s health.

Working again the field of the 16mm New Left essay film, Lee Anne Schmitt connects an array of topics, books, and objects to reflect on the rise of the new conservative movement and the effects of dark money on American politics and culture. In easily her most personal film to date—as her father worked for Olin —she considers these values and their implications after becoming a mother. In the face of appalling attacks on women’s biological rights and the current dominance of the Republican party, *Evidence* is a sobering primer on the state of America today. (Berlinale)

Los Angeles Rebellion pioneer and filmmaker Barbara McCullough’s documentary *Horace Tapscott: Musical Griot* is a poetic meditation on the life of Los Angeles jazz musician, composer and community activist, Horace Tapscott (1934–1999). Screened in conjunction with the Getty’s exhibition [Photography and the Black Arts Movement, 1955–85][1], the film—four decades in the making—is a loving portrait of Tapscott, Black Los Angeles, and musical history. After the screening, McCullough will be joined on stage in conversation with Kristin Juarez, senior research specialist for the [African American Art History Initiative][2] at the Getty Research Institute. 

This program is part of the [Art on Screen][3] series, which celebrates moving-image media and its intersection with art and art histories, as well as the series [Black Visions: Film as Archive][4]. In addition, Barbara McCullough is featured in the Getty Research Institute’s [oral histories collection][5] as related to the 2008 program [Modern Art in Los Angeles: African American Avant-Gardes, 1965–1990][6].

Nominated for five Oscars — including Best Picture — this incisive and engaging comedy-drama from writer-director Mike Leigh explores the difficulties of human connection and the cost of burying painful truths. Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays Hortense, a black doctor working in London, who decides to seek out her biological mother and is stunned to learn that she’s a working-class white woman named Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn). Hortense tentatively reaches out to learn the truth about her parentage, but Cynthia’s own life is a disaster — she has a difficult relationship with her other daughter Roxanne (Claire Rushbrook), and is mostly estranged from her more successful brother (Timothy Spall) and his snobbish wife (Phyllis Logan). One of the great triumphs of ‘90s indie cinema, *Secrets & Lies* serves as a fascinating example of Leigh’s unique filmmaking style, in which characters and scenes are honed over a process of months of improvisation to capture something powerfully authentic.
