Under the guise of offering protection and education, the Greek government enticed parents to surrender their children to a system of Childcare Cities that served as indoctrination mills that oftentimes alienated their wards from their own families. In her riveting, visually striking adaptation of the memoir of Greek writer Giannis Atzakas, writer-director Eleni Alexandrakis tells the searing story of Atzakas and his experience growing up in these harsh institutions all the while unable to shake the memory of his rebel father and his longing for — and aversion to — a reunion.

“What a Wonderful World: An Audiovisual Poem,” edited by Udo Kittelmann, is a sweeping odyssey into the depths of human experience, unfolding through film and video. Marking the first major presentation of works from the Julia Stoschek Foundation in the U.S., this audiovisual poem experiments with time-based media by placing contemporary video works in dialogue with silent films and early cinema classics. For the first time, a large-scale exhibition bridges these two universes, creating an unprecedented encounter across more than a century of visual storytelling.

Bringing one of the world’s leading collections of time-based art to a city defined by moving images sparks a rare conversation across disciplines. It dissolves the boundaries between visual art and cinema, museum and theater, white cube and black box. In doing so, it traces the evolution of visual storytelling over the past century, highlighting both the universality of human concerns and the shifting perspectives that shape their representation.

“What a Wonderful World” presents a wide range of groundbreaking works by artists such as Marina Abramović, Cyprien Gaillard, Arthur Jafa, or Lu Yang, alongside cinematic milestones by Luis Buñuel, Walt Disney, Alice Guy-Blaché, Winsor McCay, and Georges Méliès. Together, these works form a panoramic and layered portrait of humanity and history across 120 years: altogether ironic, sincere, critical and compassionate.

“What a Wonderful World” will unfold as an explorative journey, a cinematic mystery tour, a soul-stirring experience. It invites visitors to confront the secrets and fragilities of humanity while holding up a mirror to the state of the world today.

In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, &#8220;Remember This House.&#8221; The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin&#8217;s death in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of this manuscript. Filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished, drawing on footage of Baldwin as well as archival snapshots of America through the Black lens. Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut

Join us in the microcinema for Brittany Shyne&#8217;s breathtaking and poetic documentary portrait of centennial farmers in the geographical south. Using lyrical black and white imagery, this meditative film examines the decline of generational black farmers and the significance of owning land.

Interweaving the stories of three Black generational farmers to create a collective and intimate portrait of farming today, *Seeds* is a moving and powerful exploration of their lives, joys and struggles as well as the fragility of legacy and owning land. 

With remarkable intimacy, the film documents their everyday lives &#8211; cotton harvesting, chasing cows, dealing with broken machinery and financial precarities. The camera relishes simple moments &#8211; conversations through car windows, candy from grandma’s purse as it captures moments of warmth, joy and fulfillment &#8211; turning them into striking vignettes that honor the families’ connection to the land and each other. 

But the sobering reality underscores the urgency of their story. Black farmers owned 16 million acres of land in 1910 but today, that number has dwindled to a fraction. The farmers in the community struggle to access funding that white farmers nearby seem to secure with ease. 

Through these inter-generational stories, we see the cycles of inequity and embedded racism that persist to this present day, and the signs of hope and renewal with younger generations of farmers. *Seeds* emphasizes how human beings are innately tied to our foundational roots, roots which carry our ancestral memories &#8211; somber, bitter, and sweet.

It’s 1938 and Paris has become the tenuous home for refugees on the run from the Nazis and French immigration to avoid deportation. Among them is Charles Boyer’s doctor who haunts the city’s cafes and recognizes a shared trauma in Ingrid Bergman’s desperate émigré. A tragic romance, Arch of Triumph does double duty dramatizing the cruelty of both facism and an immigration system that would render people stateless by denying them safe haven.

In this ultra low-budget B-film produced by Czech émigré Rudolph Monter, Friedrich Torberg plays a Czech concert pianist jailed and tortured by the Nazis for playing “The Moldau,” a symbol of the Czech resistance to their occupation. Escaping his captors and surviving a harrowing journey, he ends up alone on a Caribbean island where his trauma overwhelms him as he longs for his missing wife — dying unbeknownst to him on another part of the island. Imbued with expressionist shadows and told through a series of interwoven flashbacks, *Voice in the Wind* powerfully expresses the disorientation and despair of European refugees in the wake of fascist violence.

One of the boldest films of the postwar period to tackle homegrown facism, the independent production, *The Burning Cross*, was the first anti-Klan film to explicitly depict Black Americans as victims of KKK terror on screen. A newly discharged veteran disgruntled by the changes he finds in his small town gravitates to the brutes of a Klan front group, the American Only Association. The brutal realism of the film’s depiction of the rhetoric and tactics culminates in the murder of a Black family burned in their home. The film, however, is not without compromise as an opening prologue restored in this version suggests that the Klan was originally founded by “men of good intentions” who would be betrayed by a corrupt, greedy few.

Released the year after both *Gentleman's Agreement* (1947) and *Crossfire* (1947) made anti-semitism their explicit subject, this independently produced film noir takes a grittier approach to the social problem despite never mentioning the word, although the implications are clear. Directed by Austrian-born émigre John Reinhardt, *Open Secret* unfolds as a small town mystery with a newlywed couple investigating the disappearance of the friend they’ve come to visit. What they discover is a community so corrupted by hate even children join in victimizing anyone who isn’t “the right kind of people.” Ironically, a sweaty cabal stands behind it all with ambitions to take their violent campaign to the national political stage.

In a celebrated career spanning over four decades, Academy Award winner Gene Hackman (1930–2025) became recognized as one of the finest American actors of the New Hollywood era. A native Californian who relocated to New York to pursue acting in the late 1950s (with roommates Dustin Hoffman and Robert Duvall), Hackman toiled for over a decade off and on Broadway, and in dozens of small parts on film and television. By 1968, in between his star-making turns in the iconic features *Bonnie and Clyde* (1967) and *The French Connection* (1971), Hackman landed the lead role in the prestigious television anthology *CBS Playhouse*, in the installment, “My Father and My Mother.” 

Virtually unseen since its original broadcast, “My Father and My Mother” concerns a writer (Hackman) as he struggles to come to terms with decisions made in the care of his son with an intellectual disability. In seeking answers to his deep emotional crisis, the writer revisits his past, attempting to reconcile painful memories of his late parents (Ralph Bellamy, Jane Wyatt). An obscure footnote in Hackman’s oeuvre, the expressionistically staged drama (videotaped at CBS Television City) represents a creative high point in the actor’s television resume, revealing a performance of psychological depth uncommon to the small screen. In its review, the *Los Angeles Times* hailed Hackman as “outstanding,” noting the production was “... 90 minutes of thoughtful, well-played drama, of which there is much too little on TV these days.”

Described as the “unacknowledged love child of Walerian Borowczyk, Kenneth Anger, and Jean Cocteau,” **Bertrand Mandico** is a prolific and singular filmmaker. He has directed over forty short films, medium-length works, TV commercials, musical films, and features, and co-created the *Incoherence Manifesto* with Icelandic filmmaker Katrín Ólafsdóttir.

Central to Mandico&#8217;s methodology is shooting on expired film stock (16mm, 35mm, or Super 8), relying exclusively on in-camera special effects, and filming without sound, with all sound constructed in post-production. *The Wild Boys* marks Mandico’s debut feature and sends audiences on a transgressive, gender-bending (and genre-bending) surreal voyage—what the filmmaker describes as a “Robinson Crusoe–style adventure à la Jules Verne and William Burroughs.”

*The Wild Boys* tells the story of five adolescent boys—each played by actresses—who are enamored with the arts yet irresistibly drawn toward crime and transgression. After committing a brutal act, aided by TREVOR, an uncontrollable deity of chaos, they are punished by being forced aboard a ship captained by a man determined to discipline their ferocious appetites.

Ousmane Sembène, one of the greatest and most groundbreaking filmmakers who ever lived and the most internationally renowned African director of the twentieth century, made his feature debut in 1966 with the brilliant and stirring *Black Girl (La noire de* . . .). Sembène, who was also an acclaimed novelist in his native Senegal, transforms a deceptively simple plot—about a young Senegalese woman who moves to France to work for a wealthy white couple and finds that life in their small apartment becomes a figurative and literal prison—into a complex, layered critique on the lingering colonialist mindset of a supposedly postcolonial world. Poisoned water, damaged earth, and elevated cancer rates: environmental clean-up sites are one of the legacies left behind by the American chemical and munitions manufacturer “Olin Corporation”. Its other legacy was the John M. Olin Foundation, which donated millions to pushing a conservative agenda from the 1970s to the early 2000s. As a by-product or direct effort, the Olin Corporation and other conservative think tanks have had a deep and unsettling impact on American politics, family values, and women’s health.

Working again the field of the 16mm New Left essay film, Lee Anne Schmitt connects an array of topics, books, and objects to reflect on the rise of the new conservative movement and the effects of dark money on American politics and culture. In easily her most personal film to date—as her father worked for Olin —she considers these values and their implications after becoming a mother. In the face of appalling attacks on women’s biological rights and the current dominance of the Republican party, *Evidence* is a sobering primer on the state of America today. (Berlinale)

Los Angeles Rebellion pioneer and filmmaker Barbara McCullough’s documentary *Horace Tapscott: Musical Griot* is a poetic meditation on the life of Los Angeles jazz musician, composer and community activist, Horace Tapscott (1934–1999). Screened in conjunction with the Getty’s exhibition [Photography and the Black Arts Movement, 1955–85][1], the film—four decades in the making—is a loving portrait of Tapscott, Black Los Angeles, and musical history. Lightstruck is extremely excited to present a truly epic cinematic experience, as we screen Ulrike Ottinger’s nearly 8.5-hour, immersive documentary *Taiga* (1992) in a special all-day screening.

Known for her meticulously crafted experimental narrative films infusing political radicalism with a rich, surrealist opulence, German artist Ulrike Ottinger has also produced a singular body of memorable nonfiction work, though perhaps none so monumental – and mesmerizingly beautiful – as *Taiga*.

During an extended period spent in Northern Mongolia through multiple seasons, Ottinger approached ethnography in a radically different way, rejecting authoritative narrativizing or presumptuous didacticism. The extended length of the film reflects Ottinger’s larger impulse and approach in this project: to spend time – unadulterated, attentive time – with the Northern Mongolians she had befriended, and to enable their own distinctive approach to time and space in everyday life dictate the scale and pace of the film.

Over ten parts and 38 chapters, we see a seance, two weddings, preparation of foods, wrestling contests, music performances, storytelling sessions, and countless other events large and small, yet all equally defining the overall year-to-year and day-to-day experiences of nomadic life in the Darkhad Valley of Northern Mongolia. The film succeeds so brilliantly in part because of the unapologetically and earnestly fascinated gaze with which Ottinger documents what she sees, and the clear love for and engagement with people that the filmmaking reflects.
