Dark Romances is a 1990 SOV anthology filmed at EZTV and conceived by director/producer Patricia Miller and (the late) Mark Shepard. It was originally shot as an episodic TV series for PLAYBOY, but was turned down due to it being deemed too violent & gory for their network. So, Mark and Patricia decided to distribute the 3-hour, 28-minute edited stories directly to video. Film Threat originally released these as a two-volume set. The set features scream queen BRINKE STEVENS in most of the stories and has a very EC / Tales from the Crypt vibe, with distincitve lighting and set design that truly sets this anthology apart from other shot-on-video films. 5 different auteurs who all worked at or frequented EZTV (PATRICIA MILLER, MARK SHEPARD, SAMUEL OLDHAM, JOHN STRYSIK, BRYAN MOORE and RODD MATSUI) created a genuine piece of analog you have to see.  Many collaborators on this film also worked on the SOV film, CARDS OF DEATH which has a similar vibe and aesthetic.

**VOL 1.**"The Black Veil"  is a Grand Guignol-inspired gothic story set in 1988 where a psychiatrist's widow visits a college friend performing in a theatre that enacts mutilations. It is one of the longer stories in this set, running just about an hour. "Listen to Midnight" is a film noir style story about a photographer and a woman with a dragonfly tattoo who mates with and then lures men to their death.

**VOL 2**"She's Bad, She's Blonde, She's Lunch" starts off with a bang, literally, and is my favorite of the bunch. A couple robs a store, leaving a trail of bloodshed, and then takes a trip to lover's lane where they meet a man, and his monster. In "Cardinal Sin," a young man is tempted by his dreams of Hustler star Elle Rio while dealing with his overbearing religious mom. "Pet Shop of Death": A submissive husband who wants to leave his wife for his neighbor (Brinke Stevens) goes to a specialty pet shop to find something to help free him from matrimony. "Last Love" is about a psychiatrist who, depressed over the loss of her husband, ends up having an affair with his ghost! Lastly, in "What Goes Around," a composer uninspired to create music after losing his wife and child finds new inspiration with a woman who is not what she seems.

Initially emerging from religious study groups and European literary salons, book clubs originated in the 17th and 18th centuries as rebellious, intellectual spaces. These gatherings provided a vital forum for education, discussion, and social change—particularly for women and marginalized groups who were excluded from universities. 

Join Helen Bui, founder of Silverlake Reading Club and Jessica Strand, senior director of Programming and Strategic Engagement at the Library Foundation, Los Angeles, to explore the history of book clubs and reading groups, tracing their origins as intellectual, and often subversive, forums for conversation, learning, and community. They will reflect on the ways reading, gathering, and sharing knowledge has evolved into a contemporary practice of connection and cultural exchange, inspiring new ways of imagining the future.

Following the discussion, guests will enjoy a three-course dinner inspired by recipes from *The Literary Gourmet* (Linda Wolfe, 1985). Each course will be paired with a live reading performed by Interact Theatre Company, bringing the literary works behind the menu to life in a unique multisensory experience.

Jean Cocteau’s update of the Orpheus myth depicts a famous poet (Jean Marais), scorned by the Left Bank youth, and his love for both his wife, Eurydice (Marie Déa), and a mysterious princess (Maria Casarès). Seeking inspiration, the poet follows the princess from the world of the living to the land of the dead, through Cocteau’s famous mirrored portal. *Orpheus*’s peerless visual poetry and dreamlike storytelling represent the legendary Cocteau at the height of his powers.

**“Kunįkaga Remember Red Banks, Kunįkaga Remembers the Welcoming Song,” 2014, Dir. Sky Hopinka, 9 Mins, USA**

The video traverses the history and the memory of a place shared by both the Ho-Chunk and settler: Red Banks, a Ho-Chunk village site near present day Green Bay, WI was also the site of Jean Nicolet’s landing, who in 1634 was the first European in what is now called Wisconsin. Images and text are used to explore this space alongside my grandmother’s recollections. Each serve as representations of personal and shared history, as well as of practices and processes of remembrance.

**“Fainting Spells,” 2018, Dir. Sky Hopinka, 11 Mins, USA**

Told through recollections of youth, learning, lore and departure, this is an imagined myth for the Xąwįska, or the Indian Pipe Plant – used by the Ho-Chunk to revive those who have fainted.

**“Kicking the Clouds,” 2021, Dir. Sky Hopinka, 16 Mins, USA**

This film is a reflection on descendants and ancestors, guided by a 50-year-old audio recording of my grandmother learning the Pechanga language from her mother. After being given this tape by my mother, I interviewed her and asked about it, and recorded her ruminations on their lives and her own. The footage is of our chosen home in Whatcom County, Washington, where my family still lives, far from our homelands in Southern California, yet a home nonetheless.

**“Dislocation Blues,” 2017, Dir. Sky Hopinka, 17 Mins, USA**

An incomplete and imperfect portrait of reflections from Standing Rock. Shaawan Francis Keahna recounts his experiences entering, being at and leaving the camp and the difficulties and the reluctance in looking back with a clear and critical eye. Terry Running Wild describes what his camp is like, and what he hopes it will become.

**“When you’re lost in the rain,” 2018, Dir. Sky Hopinka, 5 Mins, USA**

In this video, drawing from Bob Dylan’s song “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues,” layers of experiences circling loss and longing are overlaid between images of landscapes and movement. In the song by Dylan, a stranger’s listlessness and exhaustion are woven through and around Juarez, Mexico, and so too in this video are these stories woven around colonial discontent and uncertainty as they move through an uneasy negotiation with the strangeness of the American pioneer spirit.

**“Jáaji Approx,” 2015, Dir. Sky Hopinka, 8 Mins, USA**

Logging and approximating a relationship between audio recordings of my father and videos gathered of the landscapes we have both separately traversed. The initial distance between the logger and the recordings, of recollections and of songs, new and traditional, narrows while the images become an expanding semblance of filial affect. Jáaji is a near translation for directly addressing a father in the Hočak language.

**“Anti-Objects, or Space Without Path or Boundary,” 2017, Dir. Sky Hopinka, 13 Mins, USA**

“The individual is not an autonomous, solitary object but a thing of uncertain extent, with ambiguous boundaries. So too is matter, which loses much of its allure the moment it is reduced to an object, shorn of its viscosity, pressure and density. Both subject and matter resist their reduction into objects. Everything is interconnected and intertwined.” -Kengo Kuma

The title of this video, taken from the texts of the architect Kengo Kuma, suggests a way of looking at everything as “interconnected and intertwined” – such as the historical and the present and the tool and the artifact. Images and representations of two structures in the Portland Metropolitan Area that have direct and complicated connections to the Chinookan people who inhabit(ed) the land are woven with audio tapes of one of the last speakers of chinuk wawa, the Chinookan creole, chinuk wawa. These localities of matter resist their reduction into objects, and call anew for space and time given to wandering as a deliberate act, and the empowerment of shared utility.

**“Lore,” 2019, Dir. Sky Hopinka, 10 Mins, USA**

Images of friends and landscapes are cut, fragmented and reassembled on an overhead projector as hands guide their shape and construction in this film stemming from Hollis Frampton’s “Nostalgia.”  The voice tells a story about a not too distant past, a not too distant ruin, with traces of nostalgia articulated in terms of lore; knowledge and memory passed down and shared not from wistful loss, but as a pastiche of rumination, reproduction and creation.

**“I’ll Remember You as You Were, not as What You’ll Become,” 2016, Dir. Sky Hopinka, 12 Mins, USA**

An elegy to Diane Burns on the shapes of mortality and being, and the forms the transcendent spirit takes while descending upon landscapes of life and death. A place for new mythologies to syncopate with deterritorialized movement and song, reifying old routes of reincarnation. Where resignation gives hope for another opportunity, another form, for a return to the vicissitudes of the living and all their refractions.

Annie

**NADIE ES INOCENTE** is a hybrid fictionalized documentary of the youth gang Mierdas Punks, who play themselves. It follows reformed punk “Kara” as he takes the train from Ciudad Neza back to the main city to leave his former life behind. Shot on Betacam over a few years, and incorporating and repurposing 16mm concert footage from Minter’s collaboration with Gregorio Rocha SABADO DE MIERDA, the film is both a document of and dramatized collaboration with Minter’s subjects.

**ALMA PUNK** shares some similarity with the former, partially improvised and using non-actors, this time exploring the ins-and-outs of Mexico City’s punk scene. Following a young riot grrl as she moves north to Tijuana and eventually towards the United States. Once again challenging the form and rules of docudrama, we get a glimpse of pre-NAFTA and post 1985 earthquake Mexico.

Berlin, 2019: The 30th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall is approaching, but former East German Railway worker “Micha” Hartung (Hübner) is focused on saving his failing video store, not on the past. When tabloid journalist Landmann (Ullrich) uncovers a report from the Stasi archives linking Micha to a mass escape of GDR citizens via the city’s Friedrichstraße Station in 1984, he moves to secure the rights to the story. Denying his role at first, Micha bends the facts, confirming the report in exchange for the cash royalty.  Suddenly, Micha is a media sensation. After Paula (Paul), who was a child on that train, sees Micha on TV, she travels to thank him. Upon meeting, Paula thinks she’s found her “Berlin Hero,” and Micha has found the woman of his dreams. Still, it is only a matter of time before the web of lies and half-truths unravels, jeopardizing the couple’s happiness and the country’s understanding of the past.
