Yoko Ono’s score for *Film No. 5 RAPE (or CHASE) (1968)* begins with the instruction: “A cameraman will chase a girl on a street with a camera persistently until he corners her in an alley, and, if possible, until she is in a falling position.’

An afternoon of film, play, and connection centered around the enduring, ever-evolving game of mahjong, a tile-based game involving skill, strategy, and luck.

**Mahjong Mistress** is composed of four “Mistresses”—**Susan Kounlavongsa**, **Angie Lin**, **Zoé Blue M**, and **Abby Yingtong Wu**. These four friends, each from different cultural and creative backgrounds, were brought together by their shared love of Chinese mahjong. What began as a way to share the game with friends has evolved into a collective dedicated to fostering cultural connection and conversation through mahjong. Through events and collaborations with AAPI creatives and cultural institutions, they aim to cultivate a new generation of mahjong players. This special screening brings together two award-winning documentary shorts that dwell in the space between, the grey that no map, no flag, and no color chart can fully account for. In *Island in Between* (2023), Oscar-nominated for Best Documentary Short at the 96th Academy Awards, director S. Leo Chiang weaves the geopolitical tension of Kinmen, a Taiwanese island just two miles from mainland China, with his own personal reckoning. Having grown up in the United States, Chiang reflects on a life shaped by Taiwan, China, and America, finding in this suspended island a mirror for his own ambivalent sense of belonging.

*Colour Ideology Sampling.mov* (2024), by directors Chan Cheuk-sze and Kathy Wong, finds that same unresolvedness in the political life of color itself. Winner of Best Documentary Short at the 61st Golden Horse Awards and the Jury Award at TIDF 2026, the film deconstructs how hues become ideology, tracing the symbolism of Hong Kong yellow and Taiwan green, and how identity always exceeds the shades we are handed.

One of a handful of female outsider artists to earn praise from the early exponents of art brut, Aloïse Corbaz—born in modest circumstances in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1886; institutionalized as a schizophrenic in 1918; and kept under psychiatric observation until her death in 1964—is portrayed here by two of the premiere European actresses of their respective generations: Isabelle Huppert, who plays Corbaz as a ruminative, searching young woman, and Delphine Seyrig, astonishingly committed as the elder artist.

Newly restored by Cinémathèque Française and produced by Paul Vecchiali, de Kermadec’s sophomore feature is an ideal introduction to an unjustly forgotten giant of post–New Wave French cinema. In the same year of the release of *Aloïse*, de Kermadec would serve as one of the producers on Seyrig and Chantal Akerman’s *Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles*.

We are excited to have filmmaker Andrew Bujalski and L.A.-based artist Blair Barnes in conversation following a short-and-feature pairing of *SITREP* and *COMPUTER CHESS*, the latter screening from a 35mm archival print. Both films were shot on the Sony AVC 3260, an analog tube video camera developed in the early 1970s which has a strangely beautiful black-and-white aesthetic, its shallow focus occasionally disrupted by blooms and smears of errant light. The filmmakers will discuss their distinctive approaches and inspirations behind using this idiosyncratic camera following the screening.

“COMPUTER CHESS was released in 2013, after being filmed entirely on three Sony AVC 3260’s which were custom-fitted with an extra BNC outlet to make a stable, recorded image possible. Ultimately, one of the 3260’s was the main workhorse, as the 2:1 signal in the other two were less reliable. [DoP] Matthias Grunsky would describe the camera as having a “…transcendental character,” which endures as a representation of the Sony AVC 3250. SITREP, which will be making its debut in 2026, uses the 3250 as its foremost camera, with the Sony FX6 as the digital intermediary. Filmed almost entirely inside of an abandoned dialysis center, the project makes work of worldbuilding through encompassing tape loops and mismatches in frequency and frame rate to produce varied flicker lines, whereas COMPUTER CHESS transforms a murky hotel into uncanny chess tournament sprawl. Beyond Bujalski’s precision in nailing the period, the 3260 itself is an apt co-conspirator in slipping the piece into an idiosyncratic otherworld.

“The common denominator is the ⅔ inch tube. The evident draw is in the utility of the tube camera, and it is also in how these projects use inverse methods to speak to time, whether as a phonetic marker in *sitrep*, or an approximation of period in *COMPUTER CHESS*. There is also chronological resonance with the 1969 AVC 3260 being used in 2013, and its successor, the 1974 AVC 3250 being used in 2025.” – Blair Barnes

Naruse harbored a special affection for this rural farce starring the great comic actor Kamatari Fujiwara, familiar to American audiences as the cravenly cynical peasant Manzo in Kurosawa’s SEVEN SAMURAI. As written by Naruse himself, Hyoroku (Fujiwara), a lowly member of a backwoods kabuki troupe, brings buffoonish pomposity to his role as the front legs of the act’s puppet horse. When a drunken patron falls on the horse’s head, the company replaces it with the real McCoy, unceremoniously demoting Hyoroku and his sidekick Senpei to stable boys. Tinged with nostalgia for a pre-modern popular art and vanishing provincial folkways, Naruse’s film conjures a timeless aura as if to ward off the distant reality of war.

For the FIRST time since the famed Bolshoi Theatre Violin Ensemble toured America in the 1960s, the art of 14 violin virtuosi sounding as ONE will be heard live again. In a classical-romantic-pop program “Canzoni d'amore e di vita” (“Songs of Love & Life”), _iPalpiti_’s virtuoso violinists will play beloved vignettes by great composers, _showcasing unison and virtuosity_ – qualities for which _iPalpiti_, under Schmieder’s direction, has long been praised.

Concert will conclude with a Salute to America’s 250th!

In conjunction with The Broad’s exhibition *Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind*, Filmforum presents some films of hers not included in the exhibition, along with a few others that are.

The films of Yoko Ono demand that one slows down to view them. They might be humorous or rarified, reserved or unruly, precise or uncontrolled. Plot is not important; the idea behind them is, and calls for absorption in the space and time to look closer, perhaps to meditate or to dream. While a few of these are installed in the exhibition at The Broad and others are not, the opportunity to sit with them in full in a darkened room allows the possibility of a full appreciation.

“All Ono’s films are fundamentally conceptual, and are characterized by the same concerns that underpin her work in other media: the body, duration, ephemerality, seriality, measurement, language, an active engagement of the viewer as participant, a performative structure, attention to the properties of the material, and a break with the autonomous work of art. Many of these tenets later characterized both Conceptual Art and structural film for which Fluxus film is now acknowledged as an important precursor. In 1961, the Fluxus artist Henry Flynt wrote a definitive essay, “Concept Art,” in which he gave the first definition of Conceptual Art; terming it ‘concept art’ and ‘structure art,’ he linked it to the principles of experimental music being established by composers uch as La Monte Young, with whom Ono was presenting concerts in her Chambers Street loft the year Flynt’s text was written” – Chrissie Iles, “Erotic Conceptualism: The Films of Yoko Ono,” in Yes Yoko Ono (Japan Society & Harry N. Leonard Shelby is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty of locating his wife&#8217;s killer, however, is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare, untreatable form of short-term memory loss. Although he can recall details of life before his accident, Leonard cannot remember what happened fifteen minutes ago, where he&#8217;s going, or why.

Memento

Revisiting the groundbreaking feminist performance art movement in 1970s–1980s Los Angeles, one artist spotlights the inspirational, transformational, radical community exploding the narrative and status quo. Through interviews, archival footage, and personal reflections, feminist artist Cheri Gaulke revisits a foundational Los Angeles art space, the Woman’s Building (1973–1991), laying bare how a collective of artists transformed their bodies and voices through performance art into a powerful tool for activism, reshaping the cultural landscape for generations of women.
 
Join us in the Harold M. Williams Auditorium lobby from 1–3pm before the screening for a special viewing of archival objects from the Woman’s Building, accompanied by a conversation between Cheri Gaulke and Getty Research Institute chief curator Glenn Phillips starting at 3pm. 

Following the screening, a reception will be held on the terrace.

IAMBE FILMS in association with Metabolic Studio presents *Acting Like Women*, executive producers Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner and directed by Cheri Gaulke.
