In *French Wedding, Caribbean Style*, a supposedly joyful interracial wedding descends into chaos when long-buried prejudices and family secrets rise to the surface. Shot on self-reflexive MiniDV by the bride’s cocky younger brother, what begins as a lighthearted summer affair turns nightmarish as scandal threatens to destroy the unlikely couple’s big day.

The *Old Sorceress and the Valet* follows Eugénie and Armand, an elderly couple who have lived in Paris since 1921 as part of the wave of post-war immigration from Martinique. Eugénie, a former dancer with Josephine Baker’s Black Revue, has become a professional quimboiseuse, practising black magic for a white clientele. Armand, who had been a servant, is retired. Now, they are both old and bitter, still quarreling with each other. One day, they set out arm-in-arm for one last walk through the metropolis, confronting their past, their stifled dreams, and long-kept secrets.

Julius-Amédée Laou, born on February 9th, 1950, is a distinguished filmmaker, playwright, theatre director, and writer. Hailing from Paris with Martinican roots, Laou made his mark with the short films *Open Mic Solitaire* and *Mist Melodies in Paris*. He later expanded his cinematic vision with two notable feature films: *The Old Sorceress and the Valet* (1987) and *French Wedding, Caribbean Style* (2002).

A compelling voice representing the Caribbean diaspora, Laou masterfully blends sharp-witted comedy to unveil the stark contrasts of a Black individual's experience in France. His films, imbued with fervent outrage, range from the fiery and thought-provoking to the tranquil and comical.

I was finally able to do so, and began what became permanent exile from my own country, when I was approached by Sandrews in Stockholm. Sandrews was a major cinema distributor and at that time a production company (they were producing two films by Susan Sontag); they had just premiered THE WAR GAME in Stockholm, and offered to produce any film I chose to make. Nicholas Gosling, a young writer, joined me in developing a script for what became my second feature film. THE GLADIATORS is a bleak satire set in the near future, in which the major powers of the world, East and West, aligned and non-aligned, recognize the possibility of a major world war within our lifetime, and try to forestall it by channeling man’s aggressive instincts in a more controllable manner. They do this by forming an International Commission along the lines of the United Nations, dedicated to fighting a series of contests between teams of selected soldiers from each country. These competitions, which can be fought to the death, are called ‘Peace Games’, and are broadcast on global television via satellite – complete with sponsors and commercials. The film follows Game 256, which is being ‘played’ in the International Peace Game Centre near Stockholm, under the controlling eye of a highly sophisticated computer, hired out to the International Commission by the (neutral) Swedish Army. Harmony Holiday hosts an evening with Georgia Anne Muldrow, Imani Archer, and Bernard Brown reflecting on the tension between the spectacles of grief projected onto black fame and performance in contrast to their roots in black folk traditions. Drawing from her own life experience and her research into black grief threaded throughout the show, Holiday will lead a discussion about navigating public and private loss as a daughter of a celebrated musician. Holiday is joined in conversation by Georgia Anne Muldrow–singer, songwriter, and producer whose father Ronald Muldrow was a jazz guitarist–and Imani Archer–emerging singer-songwriter, and the only daughter of D’Angelo. The evening will close with an in-progress showing of “D’Angelo Elegies,” a new dance in dialogue with the music and life of the late singer that Holiday has developed throughout the run of the exhibition in collaboration with dancer and choreographer Bernard Brown.

Lightstruck presents *Jordan Belson: Knowledge Beyond Words pgm I.*

On June 25 and July 9, Lightstruck is honored to present two evenings devoted to one of cinema's unparalleled visionaries – Jordan Belson – an artist and filmmaker whose singular body of work has justifiably been the subject of devoted contemplation and ecstatic appreciation for over six decades. Belson's films defy concrete description, which is part of their deep and personal appeal, hinting as they do at "a knowledge that is beyond words", as Belson once told writer and curator Raymond Foye (to whom we are greatly indebted for being able to present these programs). While his earliest films embodied more familiar aspects of mid-century non-objective visual art, the early 1960s marked a radical shift into intensely mystical and elusive imagery – achieved largely through Belson's own remarkable photographic techniques – to give miraculous form to the innermost regions of imagination and consciousness.

For our first program, Lightstruck is excited and honored to welcome independent curator and scholar Raymond Foye in person for an illustrated talk on Belson and his art, informed in part by their many conversations over the last five years of Belson’s life. In addition to organizing exhibits of Belson’s paintings and drawings, Foye has been working with the Belson estate to preserve and restore his films photochemically as well as digitally. Following the presentation, we are thrilled to project an exhilarating selection of seven beautiful new 16mm prints, courtesy of the Belson estate and Raymond Foye.

Following the introductory illustrated lecture, the films screening in this program are: Caravan (1952), Allures (1961), Phenomena (1965), Samadhi (1967), World (1970), Meditation (1971), and Chakra (1972).

### **ABOUT THE FILM:**

Nevada, the “leave it” state: a gathering ground for misfits, burnouts, empty bottles and spare atom bombs. It’s home to a host of interesting strangers: Roslyn; a beautiful but naive woman, reeling from a shotgun divorce, who has never stepped foot out of Reno, and Guido and Gay; a pair of erstwhile cowboys with a half-finished house in the sticks and bittersweet memories of a west that’s no longer wild. Roslyn moves out to the country and tentatively begins to build a home with Gay, but is soon on the move again when Guido returns and takes them on a road trip to round up wild mustangs, picking up a rodeo-rocked bull rider along the way to serve as an extra pair of hands. Originally made for Polish television, DEKALOG focuses on the residents of a housing complex in late-Communist Poland, whose lives become subtly intertwined as they face emotional dilemmas that are at once deeply personal and universally human. Its ten hour-long films, drawing from the Ten Commandments for thematic inspiration and an overarching structure, grapple deftly with complex moral and existential questions concerning life, death, love, hate, truth and the passage of time. An all-star panel of legal scholars analyzes the meaning and implications of the latest Supreme Court cases and rulings on issues including: birthright citizenship, gun rights, tariffs, voting rights, election and campaign finance rules, the president’s power to fire agency commissioners and members of the Federal Reserve, the treatment of transgender athletes, and much more. The panelists will also consider the implications of these rulings on the role of the courts in response to the Trump Administration’s broad assertions of executive power.

Lightstruck presents *Jordan Belson: Knowledge Beyond Words pgm II.*

On June 25 and July 9, Lightstruck is honored to present two evenings devoted to one of cinema's unparalleled visionaries – Jordan Belson – an artist and filmmaker whose singular body of work has justifiably been the subject of devoted contemplation and ecstatic appreciation for over six decades. Belson's films defy concrete description, which is part of their deep and personal appeal, hinting as they do at "a knowledge that is beyond words", as Belson once told writer and curator Raymond Foye (to whom we are greatly indebted for being able to present these programs). While his earliest films embodied more familiar aspects of mid-century non-objective visual art, the early 1960s marked a radical shift into intensely mystical and elusive imagery – achieved largely through Belson's own remarkable photographic techniques – to give miraculous form to the innermost regions of imagination and consciousness.

Our second program devoted to the films of Jordan Belson spans his career up to the early 1970s, with a selection of ever-evolving and -expanding techniques of singularly mystical expression, most films screening on recently struck 16mm prints, courtesy of the Belson estate and Raymond Foye. Inspired by relationships to the worlds of Non-Objective art, jazz, meditation, and encounters with West Coast artist friends such as Harry Smith and James Whitney, Belson was consistently exploring and discovering new methods and mediums of visualization that engage with a level of consciousness which feels thrilling and otherworldly, yet somehow deeply familiar. In the late 1950s, through his planetarium “Vortex Concerts” in collaboration with sound artist Henry Jacobs, Belson amplified his vision with complex multimedia light shows which helped define the concept of “expanded cinema” and greatly influenced his filmmaking techniques. In the late 1960s, he began exploring the medium of video, synthesizing multilayered contemplations in such films as Cosmos. In 1974, Belson would team up with video artist, musician, and polymediast, Stephen Beck, to produce one of the ultimate visionary fusions of film and video in Cycles, which will conclude the evening in a glorious 16mm print.

The film utilizes experimental 3D-rendered processes entirely within a video game engine, utilizing motion capture, facial recognition, voice performance, and a vast library of stock media. *The Misconceived* takes full advantage of the new ability to shoot in virtual worlds and a marketplace of 3D architectural and character models to create an uncanny mirror to contemporary society (notably, not using generative AI).

In many ways, the movie is an argument for and against its right to exist.

Korean director Na Hong-jin delivers the ultimate supernatural horror experience in *The Wailing*, where sinister mystery meets surreal diabolism. A stranger arrives in a little village and soon after a mysterious sickness starts spreading. A policeman is drawn into the incident and is forced to solve the mystery in order to save his daughter.

Los Angeles Filmforum presents Yoko Ono’s film *“RAPE”* with a talk by Jennifer Doyle.

In conjunction with The Broad’s exhibition *Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind*, Filmforum presents her rarely screened film “RAPE” followed by a talk on the film by writer and educator Jennifer Doyle. The film is not included in the exhibition, so this is your only chance to see it currently.

Yoko Ono’s score for *Film No. 5 RAPE (or CHASE) (1968)* begins with the instruction: “A cameraman will chase a girl on a street with a camera persistently until he corners her in an alley, and, if possible, until she is in a falling position.’

“In one sense, Rape is a particularly brutal dramatization of the Warholian discovery that the camera‘s implacable stare disrupts ‘ordinary’ behavior to enforce its own regime.
