“What are a Jewish girl’s three favorite things?” So asks a character in Chantal Akerman’s American Stories, her singular attempt to capture the essence of the modern American Jewish diaspora in all its hangdog melancholy and anecdotal bliss. A stark departure from the Jeanne Dielman filmmaker’s commitment to real-time duration, the film nevertheless embodies Akerman’s typical directness and absence of sentimentality, with an engaging series of monologues and hilarious sketches performed by Yiddish theater veterans and locals, brought together in an impressionistic stream. Conveying a genuine ethnographic curiosity, the film at times resembles Akerman’s similarly episodic Toute une nuit as filtered through Borscht Belt theatrics, with the idea of heritage constantly questioned and displaced among its characters. At a time when Jewish-American identity feels at its most fragmented, Histoires d’Amérique is notable as an authentic vision of Judaism without Zionism, and deserves to be appreciated as a film of Jewish folk tales par excellence. -Micah Gottlieb

**The Holy Mountain score:**

The soundtrack for Alejandro Jodorowsky’s 1973 surrealist masterpiece, The Holy Mountain, was composed by Jodorowsky himself, the late Ron Frangipane and jazz trumpeter Don Cherry. Ron turned Jodorowsky’s melodic fragments into orchestral arrangements and Don improvised music as the film was projected in silence &#8211; with a group reported to have been more than 100 musicians! Although the film only features synthesizer in a specific segment (track 17, entitled “F*ck Machine”), given the period in which the film was released, the utilization of the synthesizer underscores its emerging significance in the world of music and film scoring. After all, commercial synthesizers were only released five years prior to the film&#8217;s making.

The film was produced by the Beatles’ manager Allen Klein of ABKCO Music and was funded by John Lennon and Yoko Ono after they fell in love with Jodorowsky’s previous film, *El Topo*.

Our microcinema is going to the birds with Penny Lane&#8217;s rapturous documentary about everyone&#8217;s favorite escaped zoo owl Flaco &#8211; *Wild Inside*.

In February 2023, a Eurasian Eagle-Owl named Flaco escapes from the Central Park Zoo and sets off on a magical odyssey through the island of Manhattan. Flaco answers the call of the wild – and discovers he was wild inside all along. *Wild Inside* is an underdog story of resilience and self determination as Flaco the Owl beats the odds and accomplishes the impossible. Flaco busts out of his cage barely able to fly, but he adapts, he explores and eventually – it seems – he goes far beyond mere survival, becoming an internationally known icon of freedom, hooting from the highest water towers. He claims all of New York City as his wild kingdom.

The remarkable story of Flaco raises some questions: is it right to keep a bird in a cage? Is there any real distinction between “zoo animals” and “wild animals”? How can we be better to our nonhuman neighbors?

This one of a kind owl’s epic song is sung in *Wild Inside* by a chorus of besotted New Yorkers – young and old, bird-nerds and civilians, many of them immigrants themselves – all of them reaching for a glimpse of the wild, a glimmer of magic, or even just someone to believe in. Nevertheless, it was largely dismissed upon its release by critics unable to see the urgency in its evocation of a gritty dystopia in which Black people have been relegated to living in a slum called the Terrordome, where simmering racial tension threatens to boil over in the wake of a young boy’s death. Over thirty years later, Onwurah’s fusion of political commentary and genre spectacle looks positively prescient, and her ability to build an entire cosmology that connects the history of slavery to present-day police brutality is nothing less than visionary.

Join 7th House and Vidiots in our microcinema as we rediscover Karen Sperling&#8217;s newly unearthed groundbreaking film, *The Waiting Room*, shot with an all-female crew at the Manhattan Psychiatric Center on Wards Island and virtually unseen for 50 years! Don&#8217;t miss your opportunity to be one of the first to revisit this mind-bending lost film at Vidiots!

Karen Sperling emerged as a pioneering yet underrecognized figure in American independent cinema of the 1970s. The granddaughter of Hollywood mogul Harry Warner, Sperling carved her own artistic path, directing two highly distinctive films in the early part of the decade. In 1971, at just 25 years old, she wrote, produced, directed, starred in, and composed the score for *Make a Face*, an experiential psychodrama reminiscent of *Repulsion* (1967). Two years later, she made history by assembling an all-woman film crew to create *The Waiting Room*, an enigmatic exploration of personal, familial, and institutional relationships between women. Shot entirely within the Manhattan Psychiatric Center on Wards Island, the film blends naturalism with avant-garde techniques—incorporating elements of dance, theatricality, and video art.

As Sperling remarked in a *Daily Times* article in 1973, “the production crew is made up of women whose feelings, and the unique environment women create together extends right into the filming of the story, reinforcing the conception.” The total creative and financial freedom Sperling enjoyed was double-edged: after a handful of press and industry screenings in 1973, the film went undistributed and was never publicly screened again.

Despite its groundbreaking nature, *The Waiting Room* was largely forgotten, though its approach anticipated the work of legendary filmmakers like Yvonne Rainer and Chantal Akerman. Many members of its pioneering all-woman crew, including Roberta Findlay and Alexis Krasilovsky, Nancy Schreiber are notable filmmakers and film industry professionals themselves, while Sperling pursued interests outside the film industry. As an act of cinematic archaeology, it’s fascinating, but it wouldn’t be so exciting if the films themselves weren’t also incredible works of art.

James Benning’s mesmerizing new film spans decades of U.S. history with simple and seemingly minor gestures. Foregrounding its own structural form, *Little Boy* shows us a series of prefabricated toy models being painted in close-up, accompanied by the rallying cries of folk and pop standards, followed by images of the models’ final construction overlaid with passages of political oratory, from voices inspiring or nefarious. The cumulative image is one of a society doomed to cycles of domestic decline and implicated in international terror in the name of “peace-making” interventionism. A companion piece to *American Dreams: Lost and Found*, Benning’s 1984 film composed entirely of baseball card memorabilia, *Little Boy*—its title recalling the lyrics from Pete Seeger’s “What Did You Learn in School Today?”—is an American epic in miniature.

*Stepney Western* is an experimental documentary by Harry Lawson, made in collaboration with a group of young inner-city horse riders from Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Recasting their neighbourhood as the Wild West, the film sits at the porous boundary between fact and fiction, combining recontextualised iPhone clips shot by the riders and archival material with Lawson’s own footage. It is loosely centred on their Alternative Provision programme — a unique alternative for young people in England who struggle in mainstream education settings. 

*In With Both Feet* is a unique oral history of the stables, written by Kathryn Scanlan in response to the film. The audience will listen to a recording of Scanlan’s piece, read by Paula Archer, one of the founders of Stepney Bank Stables. What emerges is a kind of collective portrait, made up of edited fragments of speech from Lawson’s rushes.

The screening and reading will be followed by a conversation between Lawson and Scanlan.

Negativland's complex chaos of plunderphonics poses both serious and silly questions about the nature of sound, media, technology, control, propaganda, power and perception in the global village. Negativland continue to be pioneers of art in the electric age, and the medium reveals that any message is all in our heads.

Negativland is an American experimental music band that originated in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1970s. The core of the band consists of Mark Hosler, David Wills, Peter Conheim and Jon Leidecker. Negativland has released a number of albums ranging from pure sound collage to more musical expositions.
