Discos Rolas presents a special 50th anniversary screening of *Chulas Fronteras* (1976), newly restored in 4K and paired with the short *Del Mero Corazón* (1979).

A performance by corrido singer-songwriter Gallo Armado (Monterrey, MX) will precede the screenings, and following them, filmmaker Maureen Gosling (editor of *Chulas Fronteras* and co-director of *Del Mero Corazón*) and Juan Antonio Cuéllar (longtime archivist of Arhoolie Records’ Frontera Collection) will join moderator Alexandra Lippman (Discos Rolas and Pomona College) for a discussion of the two films. The talk will be followed by DJ sets by Sonido Sabotaje (Monterrey, MX), Trucha Soul (Austin), and Sonido Sapo (LA).

Directed by Les Blank and Chris Strachwitz, *Chulas Fronteras (Beautiful Borders)* celebrates the famed Mexican-American musicians of the borderlands, the migrant farming communities from which they come, the strong family bonds of Tejanos, and the social protest ethos inscribed in their music. From joyous, lively dance tunes to soulful, political work songs, musica norteña fuses traditional Mexican harmonies with central European dancehall rhythms. The film brims with tender affection for its subjects, the vitality of their marvelous music, and the generosity of spirit that they show in the face of hardship. *Del Mero Corazón (Straight from the Heart)*, directed by Les Blank and Maureen Gosling, is a lyrical journey through the heart of Chicano culture as reflected in the love songs of the conjunto tejano and musica norteña traditions. The film was constructed from outtakes from *Chulas Fronteras* and additional footage shot in California.

Originally staged by the East West Players, pioneering author [Wakako Yamauchi](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/09/obituaries/wakako-yamauchi-dead.html)’s adaptation of her award-winning play, “And the Soul Shall Dance,” for KCET’s *Hollywood Television Theatre* is a poetic, haunting drama that reveals the hardships Japanese Americans faced during the Great Depression. Set in California’s Imperial Valley, Yamauchi's moving work explores the lives of two farming families as they struggle to make ends meet and assimilate in a so-called land of opportunity defined by systemic racism.

Yamauchi’s teleplay unfolds through the eyes of a sensitive girl, Masako (Denice Kumagai), who bears witness to the challenges facing her loving parents (Pat Li, Sab Shimono) and the unraveling lives of a neighboring couple, Emiko (Haunani Minn) and Oka (Yuki Shimoda). Abused by her husband from an arranged marriage, Emiko dreams of a return to Japan to reclaim her past life, far from an inhospitable America. Her profound journey represents an indelible requiem for generations of Issei and Nisei beyond the play’s setting of the 1930s, with Yamauchi herself unjustly incarcerated as a teen at the concentration camp for Japanese Americans in Poston, Arizona, during World War II.

“What a Wonderful World: An Audiovisual Poem,” edited by Udo Kittelmann, is a sweeping odyssey into the depths of human experience, unfolding through film and video. Marking the first major presentation of works from the Julia Stoschek Foundation in the U.S., this audiovisual poem experiments with time-based media by placing contemporary video works in dialogue with silent films and early cinema classics. For the first time, a large-scale exhibition bridges these two universes, creating an unprecedented encounter across more than a century of visual storytelling.

Bringing one of the world’s leading collections of time-based art to a city defined by moving images sparks a rare conversation across disciplines. It dissolves the boundaries between visual art and cinema, museum and theater, white cube and black box. In doing so, it traces the evolution of visual storytelling over the past century, highlighting both the universality of human concerns and the shifting perspectives that shape their representation.

“What a Wonderful World” presents a wide range of groundbreaking works by artists such as Marina Abramović, Cyprien Gaillard, Arthur Jafa, or Lu Yang, alongside cinematic milestones by Luis Buñuel, Walt Disney, Alice Guy-Blaché, Winsor McCay, and Georges Méliès. Together, these works form a panoramic and layered portrait of humanity and history across 120 years: altogether ironic, sincere, critical and compassionate.

“What a Wonderful World” will unfold as an explorative journey, a cinematic mystery tour, a soul-stirring experience. It invites visitors to confront the secrets and fragilities of humanity while holding up a mirror to the state of the world today.

In his last film, shot shortly before his death, Monteiro plays João Vuvu, a Chaplinesque retired widower who spends his days riding his neighborhood bus and conversing with old and new acquaintances in the streets of Lisbon. In his austere, elegant apartment, the light is both welcoming and seductive while playful exchanges on lust and desire occur with different women who bless a routine of poetic solitude, antifascist anthems, and the mysteries of spiritual pleasure. The film’s famous final shot—a reflection of the director’s eye—shows, like few others, that cinema, in reflecting the unseen and unutterable, is where life meets death.

Join us in the microcinema for Brittany Shyne&#8217;s breathtaking and poetic documentary portrait of centennial farmers in the geographical south. Using lyrical black and white imagery, this meditative film examines the decline of generational black farmers and the significance of owning land.

Interweaving the stories of three Black generational farmers to create a collective and intimate portrait of farming today, *Seeds* is a moving and powerful exploration of their lives, joys and struggles as well as the fragility of legacy and owning land. 

With remarkable intimacy, the film documents their everyday lives &#8211; cotton harvesting, chasing cows, dealing with broken machinery and financial precarities. The camera relishes simple moments &#8211; conversations through car windows, candy from grandma’s purse as it captures moments of warmth, joy and fulfillment &#8211; turning them into striking vignettes that honor the families’ connection to the land and each other. 

But the sobering reality underscores the urgency of their story. Black farmers owned 16 million acres of land in 1910 but today, that number has dwindled to a fraction. The farmers in the community struggle to access funding that white farmers nearby seem to secure with ease. 

Through these inter-generational stories, we see the cycles of inequity and embedded racism that persist to this present day, and the signs of hope and renewal with younger generations of farmers. *Seeds* emphasizes how human beings are innately tied to our foundational roots, roots which carry our ancestral memories &#8211; somber, bitter, and sweet.

With camera in hand, Eve-Lauryn LaFountain's Experimental Films extinguish mythical ideals of history in the American Southwest, while engaging a troth of interrelated dynamics between the land and those who hear its beauty and history. The films often bind together the very layered and enchanting awareness(es) between place and space, while concomitantly living life and critiquing stereotypical media representations of Native people and cultures. At other times, the films exhibit imagery symbolizing a liberated consciousness, free from a contaminated imagination suppressing the textures and colors of our everyday experience of land and landscapes. Eve memorializes the strained and distant relationship contemporary life has to a directly connected spirit to nature. Simultaneously she heightens the reading we have of existence through audiovisual blessings and cleansings, from legacies of colonialism(s), and cycles of ecological collision and collapse. Eve-Lauryn Little Shell LaFountain is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. She is a multimedia artist, filmmaker, and educator. Her work explores identity, history, Indigenous Futurism, feminism, ghosts, magic, and her mixed Native American and Jewish heritage through lens-based media and installations. She is a Mandel Institute Cultural Leadership Fellow, and has received support for her work from the Sundance Institute, Mike Kelley Foundation, Andy Warhol Foundation, Cousin Collective and more. She has exhibited her work in venues and festivals around the world. She holds a BA from Hampshire College, and a dual MFA in Film & Video and Photography & Media from CalArts.

Director Fritz Lang’s post-war espionage thriller follows Gary Cooper’s nuclear physicist from his lab working on the Manhattan Project to an Italian resistance unit on an OSS mission to rescue a dissident scientist forced to help the Nazis on their own atomic bomb. Lang delivers some outstanding action sequences (no one socks a Nazi quite like Gary Cooper) while later-blacklisted screenwriters, Ring Lardner Jr. and Albert Maltz, put a progressive spin on the film’s nuclear politics — “When are we going to be given a billion dollars to wipe out cancer?” decries Cooper’s physicist — alongside its message that resistance to fascism isn’t only necessary but a moral obligation.

In this mystery melodrama, the legacy of a “great man” of America is called into question after his sudden death in a suspicious car accident. Spencer Tracy is the grizzled veteran reporter who starts asking all the wrong questions of Katharine Hepburn’s grieving but suspicious widow. Donald Ogden Stewart’s script comes with a few paeans to American exceptionalism — ”You and I are free men today because centuries ago some unknown guy got an idea in his head that he was just as good as the guy who was bossing him” — in a story that decidedly suggests “it can happen here” as homegrown fascists wrap themselves in patriotic imagery and rhetoric.

American Graffiti

Described as the “unacknowledged love child of Walerian Borowczyk, Kenneth Anger, and Jean Cocteau,” **Bertrand Mandico** is a prolific and singular filmmaker. He has directed over forty short films, medium-length works, TV commercials, musical films, and features, and co-created the *Incoherence Manifesto* with Icelandic filmmaker Katrín Ólafsdóttir.

Central to Mandico&#8217;s methodology is shooting on expired film stock (16mm, 35mm, or Super 8), relying exclusively on in-camera special effects, and filming without sound, with all sound constructed in post-production. *The Wild Boys* marks Mandico’s debut feature and sends audiences on a transgressive, gender-bending (and genre-bending) surreal voyage—what the filmmaker describes as a “Robinson Crusoe–style adventure à la Jules Verne and William Burroughs.”

*The Wild Boys* tells the story of five adolescent boys—each played by actresses—who are enamored with the arts yet irresistibly drawn toward crime and transgression. After committing a brutal act, aided by TREVOR, an uncontrollable deity of chaos, they are punished by being forced aboard a ship captained by a man determined to discipline their ferocious appetites.

Stranded on a lush and dangerous island where pleasure and peril coexist, the boys begin to undergo profound transformations of both mind and body. Vidiots invites you back for more archival celluloid weirdness with a one-of-a-kind night of eye-popping, mind-bending, surreal, and hallucinatory 16mm short films culled from the incredible archives of **Smokehouse Films**.  From the 1920s through the 1970s, these are some of the most visually arresting films ever made including Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel’s seminal masterpiece ***Un Chien Andalou***, as well as works by Hans Richter, Jan Svankmajer, Jan Lenica, Ladisla Starevich, Man Ray, and more! Trust us, your eyeballs will never be the same!

***Un Chien Andalou*** (“*The Andalusian Dog*”, B+W, 1928)

Made in France by the brilliant Spanish director Luis Buñuel and the Spanish artist Salvador Dalí. *Un Chien Andalou* is one of the best-known surrealist films of the avant-garde movement of the 1920s. It uses dream logic that can be described in terms of then-popular Freudian free association, presenting a series of tenuously related scenes that attempt to shock the viewer’s inner psyche. Its opening scene is one of the most famous in cinema history.

***Le Retour a la Raison*** (B+W, 1923)

A lush and hypnotic experimental film in which white specks and shapes gyrate over a black background, a light-striped torso, and a spinning egg crate &#8211; It consists of animated textures, rayographs and the torso of Kiki of Montparnasse. One of the first Dadaist films and the first film made by Man Ray when he relocated to Paris.

Lightstruck is extremely excited to present a truly epic cinematic experience, as we screen Ulrike Ottinger’s nearly 8.5-hour, immersive documentary *Taiga* (1992) in a special all-day screening.

Known for her meticulously crafted experimental narrative films infusing political radicalism with a rich, surrealist opulence, German artist Ulrike Ottinger has also produced a singular body of memorable nonfiction work, though perhaps none so monumental – and mesmerizingly beautiful – as *Taiga*.

During an extended period spent in Northern Mongolia through multiple seasons, Ottinger approached ethnography in a radically different way, rejecting authoritative narrativizing or presumptuous didacticism. The extended length of the film reflects Ottinger’s larger impulse and approach in this project: to spend time – unadulterated, attentive time – with the Northern Mongolians she had befriended, and to enable their own distinctive approach to time and space in everyday life dictate the scale and pace of the film.

Over ten parts and 38 chapters, we see a seance, two weddings, preparation of foods, wrestling contests, music performances, storytelling sessions, and countless other events large and small, yet all equally defining the overall year-to-year and day-to-day experiences of nomadic life in the Darkhad Valley of Northern Mongolia. The film succeeds so brilliantly in part because of the unapologetically and earnestly fascinated gaze with which Ottinger documents what she sees, and the clear love for and engagement with people that the filmmaking reflects.

Rio de Janeiro, 1964. After suffering the end of a love affair, G.H., a sculptress from Copacabana’s artistic elite, decides to clean her apartment by herself, starting with the maid’s room. The day before, the maid had quit. In the room, G.H. faces a huge cockroach that reveals her own horror of the world, a reflection of a society full of prejudice against beings it treats as subordinate. Facing the insect, G.H. descends into an existential Via Crucis. This experience leads to the loss of her identity and makes her question all conventions that imprison females to this day. Based on a novel by Clarice Lispector.

For over four decades, from 1944–1991, Albania was ruled by one of the most repressive dictatorships anywhere in the world. For most of that time, the Marxist-Leninist regime was led by Enver Hoxha, who ruthlessly suppressed any opposition and kept his fearful population isolated from the outside world. Throughout that period, Albanians could see images of themselves and their country only as represented in the fiction features and documentaries produced by the state-run New Albania Kinostudio. In 1993, two years after the end of the regime, Albanian American visual artist and photographer Elena Dorfman began regularly visiting her mother’s home country and in 2018 she was granted unprecedented access to the collection of the Albanian National Film Archive. The result of her archival research, Dorfman’s experimental feature documentary, *THE DREAM & THE LIE* brings scenes from the archive’s film holdings together in a widescreen triptych image that can feel both epic and intimate in scale all at once. A captivating exploration of how movies were used by the regime to construct a powerful national mythology that penetrated deep into daily life, *THE DREAM & THE LIE* is also a visually arresting example of how artists can creatively and productively engage with archival material. The UCLA Film & Television Archive is pleased to host Elena Dorfman at the Billy Wilder Theater for a screening of *THE DREAM & THE LIE* followed by an in person conversation with the Archive’s 2025 Artist-in-Residence Ariel West about the film and relationship between the artist and the archive.

Drawing from Tavares Strachan’s immersive excursions into hidden histories and speculative futures in the exhibition [*The Day Tomorrow Began*](https://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/tavares-strachan-day-tomorrow-began), mother and daughter design duo Aama Studio welcome us to a film salon where they will weave cinema, textiles, and personal memory to tell intergenerational stories. 

A tour of the exhibition, short films, and discussions will explore Black liberation, arcs of migration, and evolving identities, linking ancestral memory to possibilities of today and tomorrow.

Based on the romance written by Raduan Nassar about a Lebanese family living in Brazil’s inland, the movie is a backwards version of the parable of the prodigal son. André is an unattached son, who left family and home due to severe paternal laws and suffocating maternal affection and love. Pedro, his older brother, received from his mother the mission to bring André back home.

The appearance of the brother causes André to remember moments he lived with his family since childhood and the reasons that led him to leave home: rigid and repressive morals of the father and the relationship with an excessive tendering mother. Against his father’s sermons, André celebrates life, sex and freedom. There is also an even dire motive: the incestuous relationship between André and his sister Ana. André agrees to go back home with his brother, but such decision will shake the very foundations of the family.

A pioneer of personal cinema and feminist film who never shied away from challenges, Nelson's innovative films combine painting, collage, and sound experimentation, embodying humor, resistance, intimacy, and tactile sensation. Her early films frequently reflect the inner and outer qualities, thoughts, and voices of women in the 1960s and 70s; homes, daughters, and mothers are particularly important themes in her work. Moving from painting to still photography, from analog film to digital media, as each new medium collides with a multitude of everyday objects, her work delves deeper into the texture of life and the saturated past, uncovering an intuitive yet delicate sensibility that retreats from the real world into another, imaginatively reconstructed one. During her time teaching in San Francisco, Nelson inspired countless experimental filmmakers and artists. After returning to Sweden, she continued exploring and experimenting with new audio-visual languages, leaving us with a rich and unimaginable legacy.

This retrospective will cover a range of Nelson's works, from her debut film, a feminist classic, “Schmeerguntz” (1966) (co-directed with Dorothy Wiley), to the late abstract video art “Snowdrift a.k.a. Snowstorm” (2001), with several other essential and influential masterpieces created in the years between.

The program trilogy will be co-presented by LA Filmforum, Rotations LA, the Academy Museum, and the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
