As mass media gets ever massier, and as the unbidden tide of its content/sewage has reached unimaginable, epic proportions, Lightstruck finds itself eagerly and urgently needing to present Craig Baldwin’s iconic experimental collage essay film *Sonic Outlaws* (1995) as a crucial antidote.

Exploring and illuminating the culture jamming and media appropriation work of Negativland, John Oswald, Tape-beatles, Barbie Liberation Organization, and Emergency Broadcast Network, *Sonic Outlaws* remains one of the defining (and most entertaining) informational/educational texts exploring what we as a citizenry might do to creatively defang and critically feed back into this unchecked, unregulated, unenlightening mass- and social-media hellscape. Even if it feels like throwing a single vial of vaccine at a virus the size of Vermont, we guarantee you will come away from this film inspired and activated to weather the daily screen-based onslaught that comprises our collective daily adventure.

Shot on eight different formats by longtime friend and collaborator Bill Daniel, Baldwin’s film is far more than a documentary or critical appraisal of a movement, as it actively engages in the sample-based, pastiche linguistics of radical collage that are Sonic Outlaws’ core focus. The film’s centerpiece is the storied lawsuit brought against Bay Area band Negativland, whose 1991 release “U2” badly pissed off Island Records and nearly got the band sued out of existence. But Baldwin intimately understands that the Negativland-U2 debacle is merely the most conveniently archetypal reference point for a much larger investigation of the underlying implications and overriding ideologies he and his subjects eloquently articulate throughout the film. By 1995, mass media had increasingly taken the form of an endless wave of unrequested content that engulfed society and its denizens, freely occupying real estate in everyone’s brains. By 2026, the word “exponential” doesn’t even begin to describe the scale shift we’re navigating, though it’s still essentially the same muck attempting to clog our neural pathways and overtax our pleasure/pain centers. But resistance isn’t futile, and response is required; *Sonic Outlaws* is a deeply insightful and engaging document of such responses, but also an ever-relevant argument both for their validity and their essential necessity.

1990's Baked Baby Jesus is a loud, unapologetic shot-on-video revolt against the downfall of American society. “What are a Jewish girl’s three favorite things?” So asks a character in Chantal Akerman’s American Stories, her singular attempt to capture the essence of the modern American Jewish diaspora in all its hangdog melancholy and anecdotal bliss. A stark departure from the Jeanne Dielman filmmaker’s commitment to real-time duration, the film nevertheless embodies Akerman’s typical directness and absence of sentimentality, with an engaging series of monologues and hilarious sketches performed by Yiddish theater veterans and locals, brought together in an impressionistic stream. Conveying a genuine ethnographic curiosity, the film at times resembles Akerman’s similarly episodic Toute une nuit as filtered through Borscht Belt theatrics, with the idea of heritage constantly questioned and displaced among its characters. The soundtrack for Alejandro Jodorowsky’s 1973 surrealist masterpiece, The Holy Mountain, was composed by Jodorowsky himself, the late Ron Frangipane and jazz trumpeter Don Cherry. Ron turned Jodorowsky’s melodic fragments into orchestral arrangements and Don improvised music as the film was projected in silence &#8211; with a group reported to have been more than 100 musicians! Although the film only features synthesizer in a specific segment (track 17, entitled “F*ck Machine”), given the period in which the film was released, the utilization of the synthesizer underscores its emerging significance in the world of music and film scoring. After all, commercial synthesizers were only released five years prior to the film&#8217;s making.

The film was produced by the Beatles’ manager Allen Klein of ABKCO Music and was funded by John Lennon and Yoko Ono after they fell in love with Jodorowsky’s previous film, *El Topo*.

As part of Whammy’s SOV September, The Philosophical Research Society’s 7th House Screenings & LA Filmforum are proud to present a rare theatrical screening of STRANDED IN CANTON (1974/2005), quintessential American photographer William Eggleston’s mesmerizing, unruly and disarmingly intimate lone foray into filmmaking. Armed with a then-new Sony Porta-Pak, Eggleston spent 1974 plunging headlong into the bars, back rooms and back roads of Memphis, New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta. Friends, family, artists, musicians, night owls and assorted eccentrics drift in and out of view, caught amid the boozy, volatile, freewheeling energy of the ’70s South. Nearly thirty years later, Eggleston and filmmaker Robert Gordon fashioned the long-unseen footage into a strange, hypnotic portrait of a vanished Southern world.

In place of the blazing color and immaculate, observational compositions of his iconic photographs, Eggleston gives us wobbly, ghostly, grain-clouded black-and-white video: faces emerge from pitch darkness, the camera pushes within inches of its subjects as drunken monologues, musical performances, eruptions of violence and moments of unexpected tenderness careen around it. The same eye that transformed the everyday American South into some of the most indelible photographs of the last century is unmistakably present, but here everything moves, talks back and threatens to spill out of the frame. Among those caught in its orbit are blues legend Furry Lewis and Big Star’s Alex Chilton, filmed amid the same Memphis scene that gave rise to the band—and in the very year Eggleston’s The Red Ceiling appeared on the cover of their sophomore album Radio City. Decades later, the film so captivated Spiritualized’s J Spaceman and John Coxon that they composed an original score for it in 2015. (Note: this screening features the film’s original soundtrack, not the Spaceman/Coxon score.)

Raw, funny, unnerving and at times almost hallucinatory, STRANDED IN CANTON is a startling moving-image counterpart to Eggleston’s photography, rarely seen and returning to a Los Angeles screen for the first time in 16 years.
