In its irreverent use of (new) Nouvelle Vague, musical, melodrama and nature documentary, ATTENBERG symbolically visualizes a change in generation and perspective as a father and daughter gently negotiate their individual rites of passage. The film follows a visionary architect who has come home to die in the vanishing industrial town that is his legacy to his daughter. Meanwhile, his daughter (played by Ariane Labed, in a performance that won her the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival) is exploring the mysteries of kissing with her girlfriend, and the beyond with a visiting engineer. Tsangari’s film—with a soundtrack featuring Françoise Hardy and Suicide—is poised between sincerity and hilarity, tradition and experimentation.

Six men set out on the Aegean Sea aboard a yacht, and before long, male bonding and one-upmanship give way to a loosely defined yet hotly contested competition to determine which of them is “the best in general.” As the games and trials grow more elaborate and absurd—everything is up for judgment, from sleeping positions to cholesterol levels to furniture-assembly skills—insecurities emerge and power relations shift. As in her breakthrough ATTENBERG, Athina Rachel Tsangari balances anthropological precision with a wry and wholly original sense of humor. Impeccably staged, crisply photographed and buoyed by eclectic soundtrack choices (Petula Clark, Mark Lanegan), this maritime psychodrama becomes both funnier and richer in its implications as it progresses. What begins as a lampoon of bourgeois machismo and male anxiety develops into an incisive allegory for the state of contemporary Greece, and leaves a final impression as an empathetic, razor-sharp study of human nature itself.

We’re excited to welcome filmmaker and Guggenheim fellow Rajee Samarasinghe back to Shadow Kitchen for a screening of his feature Your Touch Makes Others Invisible (winner of the 2026 “Truer Than Fiction” Independent Spirit Award), alongside the LA premiere of his new short A Flower Falling Back Into the Earth. Rajee will be present for a conversation following the films!

Your Touch Makes Others Invisible
2025, 70 min.

Fusing allegorical magic realism and investigative documentary, and made collaboratively with impacted locals clandestinely in a region still occupied by the military, Your Touch Makes Others Invisible is a lyrical examination of these missing persons through 26 years of civil war in Sri Lanka. The nonfiction elements in this film are structured by a fictional narrative thread which tells the surreal tale of a mother who loses her son to a supernatural entity plaguing her community—a nod to the actual disappearances in the region. A Flower Falling Back Into the Earth

Fresh from screenings at Oberhausen and Prismatic Ground, this film emerged from footage originally captured for Your Touch Makes Others Invisible, in particular a testimony that could not be fully conveyed within the framework of the feature. This iteration reshapes the original context, exploring the divide between filmmaker and participant, the intersection of ethnographic and colonial perspectives, and questioning cinema’s ability to bear witness. Through silence, rupture, and absence, the film attends not only to what can be shown, but to what remains unreachable, withheld, or lost.

Rajee Samarasinghe is a filmmaker born and raised amidst the decades-long civil war in Sri Lanka. He received his BFA from UC San Diego and his MFA from CalArts. He recently completed his debut feature film, Your Touch Makes Others Invisible, which has received support from the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Film Program, Berlinale Talents' Doc Station, Field of Vision, & True/False Film Festival’s PRISM program, and had its world premiere at the 2025 International Film Festival Rotterdam. Named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film in 2020, Samarasinghe was also awarded a MacDowell Fellowship in 2023, a Yaddo Residency in 2024, and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2025. He has had solo shows at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA - Modern Mondays), the Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, and the Los Angeles Filmforum (2220 Arts), among others. Samarasinghe’s films have been exhibited at many prestigious venues, including the Tiger Short Competition at IFFR, New Directors/New Films by MoMA & Film at Lincoln Center, MoMA’s Doc Fortnight, BFI London, FIDMarseille, Festival du nouveau cinéma, Oberhausen, Slamdance, SFFILM Festival, Melbourne IFF, Vancouver IFF, Guanajuato IFF, BlackStar, CAAMFest, San Diego Asian FF, L.A. Join us for a screening of *Of Color and Ink*, a documentary about the remarkable journey of artist Chang Dai-chien (1899–1983), China’s foremost painter of the 20th century. Director Weimin Zhang documents her 12-year journey to unravel the mysteries and controversies surrounding Chang’s decades of exile in South America, Europe, and the United States. In the 1940s, Chang spent a formative period in Dunhuang, studying and copying the ancient Mogao Cave murals— [the subject of a 2016 Getty Research Institute exhibition][1]—which inspired renewed public interest in the murals and refined Chang’s techniques. *Of Color and Ink* offers an illuminating, revelatory, and entertaining exploration of one of the most influential giants of 20th-century art.

The film will be followed by a conversation with director and producer Weimin Zhang, writer Carl Nagin, director of the Chang Dai-chien Research Center Yudan Zhang, and USC professor Meiling Cheng.

Epic yet intimate, sweeping yet personal, THE HOUSE IN THE WOODS stands as one of the greatest achievements in the history of television as well as legendary director Maurice Pialat’s magnum opus. Commissioned for French TV in 1971, Pialat and screenwriter René Wheeler crafted a seven-episode, nearly 400-minute miniseries about the impact of World War I on a simple French family living in the countryside. Applying a naturalistic focus to their subject, Pialat and Wheeler capture both the historical scope of the conflict and the subtle ways that a small town’s quotidian routines and rituals—church, school, tavern—are indelibly touched by it. At the center of the richly detailed narrative are the Picards, headed by Albert (Pierre Doris), a game warden for the wooded estate of a local marquis (Fernand Gravey). He and his gentle wife, Jeanne (a heartbreaking Jacqueline Dufranne), raise two teenagers—Marcel (Henri Puff), at risk of being drafted; and Marguerite (Agathe Natanson), contemplating marriage—but also shelter three abandoned boys for the duration. “After the Revolution, who’s going to pick up the garbage on Monday morning?” asked artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles in 1977. With that provocation, she shattered the divide between art and everyday labor, becoming the first artist in residence at New York City’s Department of Sanitation. Her collaborations with municipal workers injected art directly into the city’s bloodstream and redefined what creative practice could be. Inspired by Marcel Duchamp, Ukuleles pioneered the radical idea that routine maintenance—from changing diapers to picking up city trash to caring for the earth—could be acts of performance art.

Join us for a screening of *MAINTENANCE ARTIST*, the first feature documentary to explore this revolutionary public artist’s career. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, the film traces a half-century of social and artistic upheaval through the lens of essential labor and public art. *MAINTENANCE ARTIST* celebrates Ukeles’s call for a “Maintenance Revolution,” honoring the workers who keep our world running and the artist who insisted that their labor deserves to be seen.

The screening will be introduced by multimedia artist Debra Scacco, the first civic-appointed artist in residence in the City of Santa Monica’s Water and Waste divisions (2023–25).

Through tender acts of care, quiet moments of intimacy, and memories of Tibet, the question of homeland surfaces: a place they cannot return to. *Next Life* moves through these moments gently, centering the Tibetan concept of Tse Chema—reincarnation—as a way of holding the cycle of life: birth, death, and rebirth and their karmic traces.

The program will begin with Phuntsog's new short work *Auras. *After *Next Life*, hear from Phuntsog in conversation with special guests and celebrate Tibetan Buddhist culture with offerings of Tibetan ceremonial practices from local Tibetan cultural practitioners.

Facing pressures to marry and having witnessed her two sisters’ own marital struggles, sightseeing bus guide Kiyoko (Hideko Takamine) strives for her own solitary independence, resisting suitors and openly expressing a disdain for men. Through a family of four siblings, each from different fathers, Naruse explores the suffocating family life of Kiyoko’s *shitamachi* household and its surroundings. LIGHTNING is a buildup of vignettes, events and occurrences, as Kiyo experiences the world around her—misfortune, family tragedy, interpersonal quarrels and the vulgarities of men—trying to make sense of a modern existence where the promise of happiness still comes second for women.

*“THE JOURNEY was born directly out of a collapsed project in 1982, when I tried to organize another antinuclear war film, to be funded by Central TV in England, and working with a number of peace groups across the UK. I felt that THE WAR GAME was out-of-date, and I was concerned about the escalating nuclear arms race, that was allied to the US foreign policy of a nuclear war that would be limited to Europe. My idea was to create a series of scenes, again depicting the consequences of a nuclear attack on Britain, on a larger scale than THE WAR GAME, that would allow citizens across Britain to express their concerns via their involvement in the production of this project. However, Central TV withdrew its funding, on the grounds that the budget was becoming too large, and the project collapsed. After rethinking the scale of the project into a more global film dealing with the general silence on the burgeoning nuclear arms race, I appealed for funding to a number of international TV channels. Without exception, every TV channel that I contacted refused, even though I was only requesting support for filming an ultra low-cost segment in each country, where I would ask local people what they knew and felt about the world arms race. *

“*In 1976, Eleanor Coppola shot behind-the-scenes footage of *Apocalypse Now* on 16mm. For the first time, we decided to return to all original sources and scan elements in 4K for this new release. What everyone has seen over the last 30 years has been three to four generations removed from the source elements. Additionally, we utilized the 2019 4K restoration of *Apocalypse Now* for this release, incorporating those elements into the documentary. For any clips pulled from *Apocalypse Now* and used in the documentary, we maintained the original aspect ratio of 2.40 instead of letterboxing it in a 4&#215;3 frame. Lastly, we remastered the soundtrack and created a new 5.1 mix. The film was restored at American Zoetrope and graded at Roundabout Entertainment in Burbank, California. The director, Fax Bahr, approved the grade.”*

**COSMIC RAGE** is a program that presents formally subversive explorations of migration, empire, ritual and revolt. Curated in response to recent attacks against immigrant communities, the program asks us to honor the grief and rage within as a creative force that propels oppressed people towards action. These documentary, narrative and experimental works represent various perspectives by Latin-American, Black and immigrant filmmakers, all bursting with visions of rebellion and transformation. Food vendors will be present as well. Curated by Helen Peña.

The films will be followed by a live performance with Jazmin Romero and a DJ set by gh0sttaste.

All proceeds will go towards supporting immigrant tenants and organizing efforts at LA Tenants Union (LATU) & Community Self-Defense Coalition Los Angeles (CSDCLA).

Her artworks are activated through liveness and collaboration, viewer interpretation, repetition, and variation where meaning is generated through encounter and exchange. She draws from both her formal musical training and embodied, intuitive processes, using composition as a way to translate personal and collective histories into spatial and sonic experiences. *“Between 2016-17, composer Michael Nyman and I collaborated on a massive multi-screen installation for The State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, and Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. The idea was to produce a mash-up of the raw unedited Mexican footage with Michael’s music. The experimental digital restoration of the combined sounds and images would extend alongside José Clemente Orozco’s *The Epic of American Civilization* (1932-34), a large, multi-panel horizontal mural at Dartmouth College, and also inhabit a rather small area by Hermitage standards, the Jordan “Kerensky” Staircase Eisenstein had filmed for October (1928). The weight of the enterprise was its undoing. The one “object” realized was the 2-screen IDOLS BEHIND ALTARS composed of footage used by Jay Leyda for his marvelous EISENSTEIN’S MEXICAN FILM, EPISODES FOR STUDY (1955-57). The music and films evoked a new language of non-editing, that is each spoke back and forth to one another revitalizing the enchantments captured by Eisenstein. The overall effect conveys the vivid curiosity and sense of wonder witnessed by the filmmakers as they sculpted moving images into a portrait of Mexico between 1930 and 1932. The new music composed and performed in 2026 by Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky is just that, a joyous new reunion invigorating the authentic sights and sounds witnessed by Eisenstein.” — Bruce Posner*
