A tale of cinema with a bifurcated film-within-a-film structure reminiscent of Hong Sangsoo, *Two Seasons, Two Strangers* begins in a seaside town, where tourist Nagisa (Yuumi Kawai) and local Natsuo (Mansaku Takada) fall into a lush summer romance, all deep-sea blues and wind-whipped sundresses. It then yanks us out of this story to show its screenwriter, Li (Eun-kyung Shim, a former Korean child star who also acts in Japan), ducking questions and musing on her own creative block at a deliciously awkward post-screening Q&A (“I don’t have much talent”). In need of a creative and personal refresh, Li heads off to a snowy resort, where she meets the divorced innkeeper Benzo (Shinichi Tsutsumi). The two soon form the kind of relationship that a filmmaker without “much talent” would struggle to make compelling. But not Sho Miyake, who builds his story—adapted from two manga by the legendary Yoshiharu Tsuge—on a foundation of shimmering, serendipitous images, at once cozy and profound, like the way the steam off a bowl of noodles fogs up a pair of glasses, or the revelation of a landscape as a train emerges from a tunnel. Miyake’s *Small, Slow But Steady* was one of the highlights of the 2022 Berlinale, and Locarno Golden Leopard winner *Two Seasons, Two Strangers* further confirms his status as a master of deceptively placid, sensitive, and witty studies of surprising human connection. ### BEARCAVE (2025)

Set in the Greek mountain village of Tirna, Bearcave follows Argyro, a badass farmer, and her best friend Anneta, the village “it” girl and local manicurist. Once Anneta admits that she’s pregnant and planning to leave town with her lame cop boyfriend, Argyro challenges Anneta to embark on an adventure to find the mystical bear cave. Before Argyro has a chance to confess her own love, Anneta leaves for her new life in the big city. Argyro is left broken. Krysianna Papadakis (b. 1995 she/they) is from Crete, living in Athens, Greece. She completed her undergraduate studies in Social Studies with an emphasis on political theory and philosophy at Harvard University and a master’s degree in media, language, and performance in international politics at the University of Oxford. During these degrees, she also studied playwriting, comedy directing, and scenography and discovered a passion for writing and directing. She co-founded a theatre company in London and worked as a director and writer for theatre before pivoting to film. Since 2016, she has mentored teenagers in creative writing and social sciences, helping them deconstruct issues, construct narratives and find their voice. Her debut short film/proof of concept BEARCAVE, which she co-directed and co-wrote with Stergios Dinopoulos, won the Golden Dionysus for Best Film at the Drama International Film Festival and it’s now in the final stages of becoming a feature length debut.

All fears, anxieties and hopes are embodied in the character of Margo, a songwriter who was once famous but who now isolates herself in her apartment. A party held to celebrate her 40th birthday and the emotions that are born there unexpectedly help Margo enter a new stage in her life.

Alexander Voulgaris (Greek: Αλέξανδρος Βούλγαρης) is a Greek film director, screenwriter, composer and actor. Films Voulgaris wrote, directed and scored include Thread, Roz and Higuita. His composing credits include The Last Note, Park and The Sentimentalists, the latter of which garnered him a Hellenic Film Academy Award for “Best Music”. Voulgaris is frequently credited as “The Boy”. He is the son of Pantelis Voulgaris and Ioanna Karystiani.

While the educational standards of don&#8217;t do drugs or accept candy from strangers remained staples, a new form of creative &#8220;purposeless&#8221; films for kids started to emerge with Encyclopaedia Britannica and other educational film distributors. Weird, fun, and nonsensical, these pointless shorts encouraged creativity over morals, whimsy over shock, and through kid-focused stories and animation sought to foster the imagination with plenty of fun movie magic. This program features 5 Encyclopaedia Brittanica shorts from 1969 as well as two magnificent early short films from the great Joan Micklin Silver &#8211; ***The Case of the Elevator Duck** *(1974) and*** The Fur Coat Club*** (1973) both filled with undeniable glee for any age of cinephile, plus bonus shorts for the early birds! The latest film in Getty’s Artist Dialogues series features Ofelia Esparza and her daughter, Rosanna Esparza Ahrens, whose multigenerational practice of creating *ofrendas*, or altars, weaves together memory, customs, and community. Long recognized for their role in helping establish and sustain Día de los Muertos traditions in the city, the Esparzas have shaped the practice as both a communal ritual and a contemporary art form. In the short film, *Ofelia and Rosanna Esparza: Made to Remember* (11:55 min), they reflect on the ofrenda as both cultural obligation and art: a bridge between the living and the dead, and between the stories of generations past and those yet to come.

Ofelia, born in East Los Angeles in 1932, learned the practice from her mother, who brought her traditions from Huanimaro, Mexico. She has spent decades building elaborate ofrendas that honor ancestors through handmade paper flowers, textiles, photographs, objects and layered narratives grounded in the conviction that to be forgotten is the most final death of all. Rosanna carries this legacy forward, exploring how the making itself, the gathering, the storytelling, the shared labor, is as much the offering as the altar it produces.

Together, Ofelia and Rosanna illuminate the ofrenda as a form of ephemeral art: carefully composed with attention to focal point, dimension, and material, yet always temporary by design. Here, conservation carries different meaning than it typically does in cultural heritage contexts. Rather than relying on permanence, the artform is sustained through intergenerational continuity, carried forward by storytelling, teaching and community solidarity. 

Following the screening, Ofelia and Rosanna Esparza will join Los Angeles County's Civic Art Conservation and Collections Manager Laleña Vellanoweth for a conversation on the conservation of their work and audience Q&A.

After his girlfriend emigrates to Italy with the expectation that he will soon follow, bike messenger Amir (Amirhossein Hosseini) is still neither fully committed to leaving nor fully clear on what the future holds if he stays in Iran. Instead, he spends his in-between days hanging with friends who have themselves settled into a life of drift, playing poker, cooking meals together and biking around the city and country. Nothing ever really happens, which is precisely the point of writer-director Amir Azizi’s warm and loving portrait of a generation that has learned to embrace simple freedoms and pleasures where they can find them in a world where even that can feel like an act of resistance.

Iranian writer-director Bahram Ark (*Skin*, *Animal*) plays Bahram, an Iranian writer-director who has achieved fame on the international festival circuit but has yet to have one of his films screened in Iran. After his latest is again denied a permit, he and his producer Sadaf (Sadaf Asgari) set out on her moped determined to find a way to get it on screen with the help of a hodgepodge of decidedly eccentric characters. Bahram’s situation is all too familiar to co-writer-director Ali Asgari (*Terrestrial Verses*) and his regular collaborators here, who use romantic comedy tropes to illuminate the absurdities — and dangers — faced by filmmakers in Iran.

Part adventure story, part mystical allegory, director Aliyar Rasti’s *The Great Yawn of History* begins with an eccentric job interview. Answering that he believes in nothing, Shoja (Amirhossein Hosseini) gets the gig: following Beitollah deep into the Iranian desert to find a box of gold coins he saw in a vision. Rasti’s debut feature won the Special Jury Award in the Encounters section of the Berlin International Film Festival for its exploration of faith and greed set against the hardscrabble landscapes of a depopulated rural Iran.

Frequently throughout the year we will be highlighting a few titles that are considered to be "stuck" on VHS, with no physical releases since the format (discounting video transfers on DVDs, etc.) for various reasons, i.e. legal ownership disputes, music licensing issues, or perhaps just perceived lack of interest.

‍This month brings us HEARTS AND ARMOUR, a strangely psychedelic, and wonderfully cheap Italian sword & sorcery flick that was distributed by Warner Bros on VHS yet has still never seen a physical release since.

With that provocation, she shattered the divide between art and everyday labor, becoming the first artist in residence at New York City’s Department of Sanitation. Her collaborations with municipal workers injected art directly into the city’s bloodstream and redefined what creative practice could be. Inspired by Marcel Duchamp, Ukuleles pioneered the radical idea that routine maintenance—from changing diapers to picking up city trash to caring for the earth—could be acts of performance art.

Join us for a screening of *MAINTENANCE ARTIST*, the first feature documentary to explore this revolutionary public artist’s career. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, the film traces a half-century of social and artistic upheaval through the lens of essential labor and public art. *MAINTENANCE ARTIST* celebrates Ukeles’s call for a “Maintenance Revolution,” honoring the workers who keep our world running and the artist who insisted that their labor deserves to be seen.

The screening will be introduced by multimedia artist Debra Scacco, the first civic-appointed artist in residence in the City of Santa Monica’s Water and Waste divisions (2023–25).
