Acropolis Cinema presents *Fast*, by Rob Tregenza. A slow film about a fast subject.

Rob Tregenza has worked at the leading edge of American independent cinema since his 1988 debut *Talking to Strangers*, a film built entirely from extended single-take sequences shot in nine locations across the city of Baltimore. His subsequent films—including *Inside/Out* (1997), *Gavagai* (2016), and *The Fishing Place* (2024)—constitute a body of work defined less by narrative than by the physical weight of recorded reality. Largely self-financed and operating outside the festival-circuit economy, he remains one of the few American filmmakers whose practice has more in common with Straub-Huillet or Chantal Akerman than with anything produced in the American independent mainstream.

Tregenza’s sixth feature returns to the American South—shot on location in Lexington and Richmond, Virginia—after his Norwegian excursions in *Gavagai* and *The Fishing Place*. Says Tregenza: “For Sterling (Madison Pankey), a sort of present day Alice, the graveyard Lotus she redeems becomes a totem, a saturated phenomenon permitting her to move freely in time on a phantom road. It is a sort of Ford but never a DeLorean. A Southern woman with a fair deal of historical baggage and deep secrets, Sterling journeys back to her rural home, the Lotus takes her through the shadow of the valley into the adjoining worlds of the living and the dead. Desiring to become an F1 driver, Sterling must go fast/hard, against/through all tunnels imagined or concrete.” (MoMA)

Director** Cat Solen** has been focused on television projects since we screened her last music video in 2019 (the incredible Tierra Whack video *Unemployed*). We're happy that** Olivia Rodrigo** cajoled her back to music videos, collaborating with her creative director **Jaime Gerin** on a beautifully handcrafted video for* The Cure*. 

We're excited to screen **Aidan Weaver**'s atmospheric mystery *A Crime Across Four Landscapes*, which premiered at this year's Tribeca Festival. Hot off his fantastic short film *Swim Lessons*, filmmaker Matt Wisner will join us to share his music video debut *Knifefish *for LA-based artist Oxis. 

Director-artist-curator-writer** Aaron Rose** returns to Flux to premiere *The Ego Has Landed *for the artist TRZTN, which Aaron describes as "a metaphor for identity crisis in the modern world." New York-based filmmaker and photographer **Nicholas Shaya** will present *Rotelle*, the story of a bicycle in the big city. 

There is an art to capturing dance on film. We were impressed by filmmaker **Rachel McDonald**'s intricate film *Ternura* which was shot in Mexico City with six dancers in a single hour. In 2023, we screened Mette's *Mama's Eyes* (directed by Camille Summers-Valli and one of that year's best). We are delighted for her return with the equally electric *Coming of Age*, this time co-directed by **Mette** herself and **Helen Morales**.

*Place Is the Space *is a four-hour immersive performance experience combining live jazz improvisation, theatrical storytelling and multimedia design inspired by Sun Ra’s philosophy and his film *Space Is the Place*. The work functions as both a concert and an experiential ritual where musicians, performers, visual elements and audience members collectively shape the space into a place. Metaphorically building the vehicle that Sun Ra aspired towards, expressing Afrofuturistic themes of transcendence, liberation and joy.

This cosmic jam session culminates in the audience crowning a "New Sun Ra," who leads the full audience on a pilgrimage to the Hammer Museum for one final performance, where everyone is invited to play along.

Presented in conjunction with the Hammer Museum’s current exhibition *SPACE IS THE PLACE*, which frames “space” as a conceptual framework inspired by the works and views of experimental jazz artist Sun Ra.

In the scorching heat of the desert, where the ground is blistering and the air thick with pervasive sand, an infrastructure project unfolds in the unforgiving natural environment. The scale of this endeavour is so immense that the individuals navigating through it appear minuscule in comparison. Within the haze of sand and dust, those who have relocated for the construction of the infrastructure, returning from a day’s toil, find their way back to the tented area hastily assembled. As the roaming lens of the camera moves through the living area and returns to the expansive terrain where this massive engineering project is unfolding, the sun begins to set. Trucks and figures gradually disappear into the swirling winds and sand. At this moment, the camera’s eye, constantly worn down by the persistent dust, suddenly loses its usual ability to discern light and shadow. Nevertheless, it persists in its attempt to capture, to the point where it seizes the abstract interplay of light and shadow in this world. The light itself becomes akin to etched marks on the virtual canvas of digital imagery, leaving behind traces and lingering impressions. (Berlinale)

Over nearly two decades, China’s Zhou Tao has earned a venerated position as one of the most unique and surprising moving-image artists of his generation. One constant across Zhou’s practice is his ability to deploy basic filmic devices like composition, depth, and camera movement to play with perspective in ways that are not only visually dazzling but subtly political. Here, the artist recasts photogenic coastal locations from the Guangdong/Hong Kong/Macau Greater Bay Area famed for their social media virality by privileging the candid, the hazy, and the abstract over crisp poses engineered for likes. Constantly shapeshifting, with its scroll-like camera movements accented by a mix of on-site and sourced sound, *The Rib of the Greater Bay Area* is another transfixing entry in Zhou’s rich body of work.
