Sullen and withdrawn, Chihiro loses himself in a modern dance class (led by Japanese choreographer Osamu Jareo) in which he and Naoyo (Hoshi Ishida) rehearse intricate movements around one another but never touch. Expression without connection becomes the catalyst for the violent emotional surge that transforms this into Hamaguchi’s *River’s Edge*. Angel's Body Temperature (天使の体温, 2001) opens on Aketo, a 20-year-old Tokyo college student with a lover, Hiroshi, who lives in Kyoto. They ache. They wander. When a young woman named Harumi drifts into Aketo's orbit and into his apartment, the film wallows in nostalgia and alienation. Shot on digital video with a grainy, restless texture - like a relic too quickly-forgotten on VHS.

Directed by Akihiro Suzuki, Angel's Body Temperature belongs to a body of Japanese queer cinema from the late 1990s and early 2000s that has remained almost entirely invisible to Western audiences - a lost chapter of New Queer Cinema unfolding parallel to the movement's celebrated American and European counterparts. Suzuki's film shares that era's preoccupation with young men adrift in cities. Outside of directing, Suzuki notably programmed New Queer Cinema for Japan and even co-produced Latin Boys Go to Hell.

The screening will be introduced by Dakota Noot, who contributed a commentary track to the film's recent North American Blu-ray release from Kani Releasing. A Q&A will follow, along with a virtual interview with director Akihiro Suzuki, offering rare direct access to a filmmaker whose work is only now finding the audience it deserves.

**Dakota Noot** is a Los Angeles-based artist and curator. He uses drawings, paintings, and installations to create animal-human hybrids that explore rural yet fantastical, queer identities. Originally from Bismarck, North Dakota, he continues to show in both North Dakota and Los Angeles, including solo and two-person shows at Highways Performance Space, MuzeuMM, and PØST. Noot has exhibited in group shows at Charlie James Gallery, Shoshana Wayne Gallery, Torrance Art Museum and “Queer Biennial: What if Utopia?” at LAST Projects. Brain Dead Studios presents O.V.A. Night, a surprise screening of obscure anime rarely seen on the big screen.

O.V.A. (Original Video Animation) emerged in Japan during the home video boom of the 1980s. Released directly to home video, OVAs gave animators the freedom to work outside the usual restrictions of television and theatrical releases, opening the door to stranger stories, bigger ideas, and imagery that could never have made it onto TV. The result was some of the most ambitious, violent, experimental, and downright bizarre anime of the era.

Many of these titles have never been properly restored or given a theatrical release, and we think they deserve to be played big, played loud, and seen with a crowd.

O.V.A. Night

Four strangers' paths cross by chance, leading to complex emotional entanglements that challenge their existing relationships and force them to confront uncomfortable truths about love and commitment.

The midcentury modern aesthetic of Chuck Jones's streamlined Roadrunner cartoons (b. 1949) is fruitfully transported to a 21st century context of rampant legalism and corporate hegemony. Taking off from a clever 1990 *New Yorker* piece by Ian Frazier, director Dave Green (*Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows*) executes the most satisfying blend of live action and animation since Robert Zemeckis’s 1988 *Who Framed Roger Rabbit*.

The pristine desert landscapes of the cartoons have given way to a dingy, cluttered southwestern strip mall culture. Once an incurable techno-optimist, Jones’s Wile E. Coyote has finally grown disillusioned with the utopian promises of the Acme Corporation. Enlisting the aid of a personal injury lawyer (Will Forte), he files a product liability complaint that threatens to expose massive corporate malfeasance. The screenplay, by the versatile Samy Burch (*May December*, *Late Fame*) introduces some nicely understated pathos as Wile E., the ultimate lone wolf, discovers the pleasures of friendship. The animation was directed by Keith Roberts; Eric Bauza voices Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety, and Foghorn Leghorn. Completed in 2023 and shelved by Warner Bros., the film reached theaters in 2026 through Ketchup Entertainment.

Hell Houses are a distinctly American phenomenon which began in 1990 just outside of Dallas, Texas at the Trinity Assembly of God Church. The original Hell House was conceived as a modern-day fire-and-brimstone sermon. Today, this religious ceremony of sorts is replete with actors, extensive lighting equipment and full audio-visual tech crews.

Inside the Hell House, tour guides dressed as demons take visitors from room to room to view depictions of school massacres, date rape, AIDS-related deaths, fatal drunk driving crashes, and botched abortions. With full access to the behind-the-scenes action, HELL HOUSE follows the process from the first script meeting until the last of the 10,000 visitors passes through the Hell House doors. The movie gives a verite window into the whole process of creating this over-the-top sermon, while showing an intimate portrait of the people who fervently believe its message. Shot on 16mm film and featuring a score by Bubba and Matthew Kadane, formerly of the band Bedhead.

While the white sheet has become an icon of the returning dead, it also stands in the place of projection. The sheet, stretched like a translucent canvas, is a reminder of the first public exhibitions where shadowy figures suddenly appeared on or behind its surface. The screen, like the sheet, becomes the membrane through and onto which the figure of the ghost takes shape, confounding our ability to distinguish the figure (the ghost-as-sheet) from the ground (the screen-as-sheet). But while the sheet may serve as the connective tissue between a living audience and the dead, the image or shadows that congregate on screen stir up trouble for the living. Tonight’s films explore the convergence of touch (or the inability to touch) with the ghostly and our changing relationship with the past and the dead.—*Kriss Ravetto-Biagioli, Martine Beugnet*

Over a 12-year span (2004–2016), Marusya Syroechkovskaya documented her relationship with Kimi, the young man who became her friend, companion and husband. While documentary practice became the filmmaker’s lifeline, Kimi, like so many young Russians growing up under an increasingly autocratic regime, was caught in a spiral of self-destruction and drug addiction. The film’s subtitle, *a message from a silenced generation*, signals the refusal to provide any closure that would exorcise ghosts and free oneself from the past. Instead, the filmmaker creates a space where a dead friend returns to tell a story that is also the story of a lost generation.

*A Ghost Story* is unusual in its use of the now dated, shrouded ghost, featuring Casey Affleck donning a plain white sheet with two black holes in lieu of eyes. While a deceptively simple narrative — a man (known only as C) dies and returns to haunt the house he lived in with his wife (M, played by Rooney Mara) — the film’s poignancy stems from its account of loss and grief, the cohabitation of death and life epitomized by the sharing of a mundane household object, and the sheet that hides and reveals live, inanimate and absent bodies.

Now, Mortimer desperately wants to protect the two serial murderers he loves, stop them from killing anyone else and keep his bride from discovering how deranged his family really is. Based on the hit Broadway play by Joseph Kesselring, the stellar cast also includes Raymond Massey and Peter Lorre.

Filmmaker Ross McElwee has spent forty years recording himself and his family, creating documentaries that chronicle the shifting contours of American society through the lens of personal history. His son Adrian grew up inside those films, and eventually began experimenting with the camera himself. When a Hollywood producer acquires the rights to adapt McElwee’s 1986 breakthrough *Sherman&#8217;s March* into a work of fiction, twenty-year-old Adrian sees a chance for his father to finally reach a wider audience. As the adaptation stalls, Adrian gets swept into a deepening drug addiction and dies from a fentanyl overdose, leaving behind hours of personal video footage. Retracing Adrian’s final years, McElwee reckons with what his camera captured and what remained hauntingly out of frame. Poor, hungry peasant Macario longs for just one good meal on the Day of the Dead. After his wife cooks a turkey for him, he meets three apparitions, the Devil, God, and Death who each ask for a piece of his dinner. From who will he accept the bargain, and what price will he have to pay? The first Mexican film to be nominated for an Academy Award, this supernatural drama is not to be missed on the big screen.
