Marking the first major presentation of works from the Julia Stoschek Foundation in the U.S., this audiovisual poem experiments with time-based media by placing contemporary video works in dialogue with silent films and early cinema classics. For the first time, a large-scale exhibition bridges these two universes, creating an unprecedented encounter across more than a century of visual storytelling.

Bringing one of the world’s leading collections of time-based art to a city defined by moving images sparks a rare conversation across disciplines. It dissolves the boundaries between visual art and cinema, museum and theater, white cube and black box. In doing so, it traces the evolution of visual storytelling over the past century, highlighting both the universality of human concerns and the shifting perspectives that shape their representation.

One of the major achievements of twenty-first-century cinema thus far, Béla Tarr’s mesmeric parable of societal collapse is an enigma of transcendent visual, philosophical, and mystical resonance. Adapted from a novel by the celebrated writer and frequent Tarr collaborator László Krasznahorkai, Werckmeister Harmonies unfolds in an unknown era in an unnamed village, where, one day, a mysterious circus—complete with an enormous stuffed whale and a shadowy, demagogue-like figure known as the Prince—arrives and appears to awaken a kind of madness in the citizens, which builds inexorably toward violence and destruction. A crucial participant and creator of experimental film in Los Angeles for close to sixty years, Morgan Fisher’s precise and beautiful films each address aspects of the processes of filmmaking with humor and conceptual rigor. As a member of the Los Angeles Independent Film Oasis (along with other key figures such as Pat and Beverly O’Neill, David and Diana Wilson, and Amy Halpern), he helped Los Angeles audiences have the opportunity to see essential films works in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His painting practice, which evolves from his same concerns with essential processes, color, and elements of personal history, has been featured in multiple exhibitions. Filmforum last hosted a one-person program with Fisher in 2004, and we’re delighted to honor him with some of the highlights of his cinematic oeuvre as part of our 50th anniversary celebration.

*Archive Talks *pairs leading historians and scholars with screenings of the moving image media that is the focus of their writing and research. Each program will begin with a special talk by the invited scholar that will introduce audiences to new insights, interpretations and contexts for the films and media being screened.

Between 1955 and 1964, filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock and composer Bernard Herrmann collaborated on eight films, including *Vertigo* (1958), *North by Northwest* (1959), *Psycho* (1960) and *The Birds *(1963), that reshaped American cinema. As the Cold War set in, censorship regimes loosened and television took its toll on the box office, Hitchcock responded to the times with stories and images that pushed Hollywood’s boundaries to attract new, younger audiences to the big screen. In Herrmann, Hitchcock found an erudite composer willing to take chances with him. Indeed, Hitchcock so trusted Herrmann's insights into the medium and music's role in it that he would adjust editing and even dialogue in key sequences to accommodate Herrmann’s scoring. In background and temperament they were unlikely partners but their work together produced some of the most enduring, visionary and influential cinema of the last century. Award-winning filmmaker and film historian Steven C. Smith dives deep into their creative relationship and the forces that shaped it in his latest book, *Hitchcock and Herrmann: The Friendship and Film Scores That Changed Cinema*. As part of this program, Smith will deliver an illustrated talk about these visionary collaborators before a screening of their iconic work on *Psycho* (1960) and a post-screening Q&A.

Paramount was so unnerved by the concept for *Psycho* — loosely based on a magazine article about serial killer Ed Gein — that Alfred Hitchcock agreed to front the cost of production himself to get it made. By the time Hitchcock brought a rough cut to Bernard Herrmann, however, even the director had lost faith in the project. “He was crazy,” Herrmann later recalled. “He didn’t know what he had.” But the composer had “some ideas.” Herrmann’s groundbreaking minimalist score of stabbing, sweeping strings elevates the stripped down dread of Hitchcock’s images in a visionary fusion like no other. Herrmann’s score made *Psycho* work and then Psycho changed cinema history.

Monteiro’s sardonicism and provocations were a constant throughout his career, often when the director appeared in his own films via his subversive alter-egos. Yet his biggest provocation was to shoot an adaptation of Robert Walser’s anti–fairy tale SNOW WHITE with, according to legend, his overcoat covering the camera lens. The result is both a humble acceptance of the artist’s limits in his attempt to fully materialize the scope of his artistic vision and, at the same time, an invitation to the audience to fill the blackness of this radical experiment with hope, light, and the fear that emanates from hearing a voice telling a tale in the intimacy of a dark room.

Poisoned water, damaged earth, and elevated cancer rates: environmental clean-up sites are one of the legacies left behind by the American chemical and munitions manufacturer “Olin Corporation”. Its other legacy was the John M. Olin Foundation, which donated millions to pushing a conservative agenda from the 1970s to the early 2000s. As a by-product or direct effort, the Olin Corporation and other conservative think tanks have had a deep and unsettling impact on American politics, family values, and women’s health.

Working again the field of the 16mm New Left essay film, Lee Anne Schmitt connects an array of topics, books, and objects to reflect on the rise of the new conservative movement and the effects of dark money on American politics and culture. In easily her most personal film to date—as her father worked for Olin —she considers these values and their implications after becoming a mother. In the face of appalling attacks on women’s biological rights and the current dominance of the Republican party, *Evidence* is a sobering primer on the state of America today. (Berlinale)

Artist Open House: *Photography and the Black Arts Movement*

Los Angeles Rebellion pioneer and filmmaker Barbara McCullough’s documentary *Horace Tapscott: Musical Griot* is a poetic meditation on the life of Los Angeles jazz musician, composer and community activist, Horace Tapscott (1934–1999). Screened in conjunction with the Getty’s exhibition [Photography and the Black Arts Movement, 1955–85][1], the film—four decades in the making—is a loving portrait of Tapscott, Black Los Angeles, and musical history. After the screening, McCullough will be joined on stage in conversation with Kristin Juarez, senior research specialist for the [African American Art History Initiative][2] at the Getty Research Institute. 

This program is part of the [Art on Screen][3] series, which celebrates moving-image media and its intersection with art and art histories, as well as the series [Black Visions: Film as Archive][4]. In addition, Barbara McCullough is featured in the Getty Research Institute’s [oral histories collection][5] as related to the 2008 program [Modern Art in Los Angeles: African American Avant-Gardes, 1965–1990][6].

These nine Los Angeles based filmmakers move across California to China, Norway and Argentina in an evening program that examines intimacy and spectacle, consciousness and catharsis, memory and dreams.

Elenie Chung’s *Citric Acid* traces the slow fracture of an artistic bond under the pressure of competition, unfolding with quiet tension and striking subtlety. Tempe Hale’s *Pick Up the Stick* explores sibling intimacy through road trip footage and improvisation, while Maya E. Rudolph’s *ICEBERG* captures the emotional dissonance of youth caught between music, family obligation, and the ache of first love in a hazy Beijing summer.

Several works interrogate how private lives are entangled with broader systems of power, history, and spectacle. Norbert Shieh’s essay film *Two Miles East* revisits a military jet crash to meditate on suburban life, militarization, and the myth of paradise. Alex the Brown’s *Apologia* reframes public apologies by powerful figures through analog video manipulation, exposing the hollow choreography of accountability, while Sue Ding’s *A Spectacle of Her Appetites* uses found footage to explore an emotional spectrum of appetite.

Threaded throughout the program is an interest in how memory is recorded, distorted, and performed. Trevor Byrne’s *Indelible Laughter* excavates male camaraderie through humor as both bonding ritual and mask. Sean Huntley’s *Lapse* destabilizes perception through horror and photography, while Anderson Matthew and Satira’s *Madre de los Descalzos* reinterprets an Argentinian folkloric figure through a queer lens, in a fever-dream convergence of music video as experimental film.

A performance by corrido singer-songwriter Gallo Armado (Monterrey, MX) will precede the screenings, and following them, filmmaker Maureen Gosling (editor of *Chulas Fronteras* and co-director of *Del Mero Corazón*) and Juan Antonio Cuéllar (longtime archivist of Arhoolie Records’ Frontera Collection) will join moderator Alexandra Lippman (Discos Rolas and Pomona College) for a discussion of the two films. The talk will be followed by DJ sets by Sonido Sabotaje (Monterrey, MX), Trucha Soul (Austin), and Sonido Sapo (LA).

Directed by Les Blank and Chris Strachwitz, *Chulas Fronteras (Beautiful Borders)* celebrates the famed Mexican-American musicians of the borderlands, the migrant farming communities from which they come, the strong family bonds of Tejanos, and the social protest ethos inscribed in their music. From joyous, lively dance tunes to soulful, political work songs, musica norteña fuses traditional Mexican harmonies with central European dancehall rhythms. The film brims with tender affection for its subjects, the vitality of their marvelous music, and the generosity of spirit that they show in the face of hardship. *Del Mero Corazón (Straight from the Heart)*, directed by Les Blank and Maureen Gosling, is a lyrical journey through the heart of Chicano culture as reflected in the love songs of the conjunto tejano and musica norteña traditions. The film was constructed from outtakes from *Chulas Fronteras* and additional footage shot in California.

Originally staged by the East West Players, pioneering author [Wakako Yamauchi](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/09/obituaries/wakako-yamauchi-dead.html)’s adaptation of her award-winning play, “And the Soul Shall Dance,” for KCET’s *Hollywood Television Theatre* is a poetic, haunting drama that reveals the hardships Japanese Americans faced during the Great Depression. Set in California’s Imperial Valley, Yamauchi's moving work explores the lives of two farming families as they struggle to make ends meet and assimilate in a so-called land of opportunity defined by systemic racism.

Yamauchi’s teleplay unfolds through the eyes of a sensitive girl, Masako (Denice Kumagai), who bears witness to the challenges facing her loving parents (Pat Li, Sab Shimono) and the unraveling lives of a neighboring couple, Emiko (Haunani Minn) and Oka (Yuki Shimoda). Abused by her husband from an arranged marriage, Emiko dreams of a return to Japan to reclaim her past life, far from an inhospitable America. Her profound journey represents an indelible requiem for generations of Issei and Nisei beyond the play’s setting of the 1930s, with Yamauchi herself unjustly incarcerated as a teen at the concentration camp for Japanese Americans in Poston, Arizona, during World War II.

In his last film, shot shortly before his death, Monteiro plays João Vuvu, a Chaplinesque retired widower who spends his days riding his neighborhood bus and conversing with old and new acquaintances in the streets of Lisbon. In his austere, elegant apartment, the light is both welcoming and seductive while playful exchanges on lust and desire occur with different women who bless a routine of poetic solitude, antifascist anthems, and the mysteries of spiritual pleasure. The film’s famous final shot—a reflection of the director’s eye—shows, like few others, that cinema, in reflecting the unseen and unutterable, is where life meets death.

With camera in hand, Eve-Lauryn LaFountain's Experimental Films extinguish mythical ideals of history in the American Southwest, while engaging a troth of interrelated dynamics between the land and those who hear its beauty and history. The films often bind together the very layered and enchanting awareness(es) between place and space, while concomitantly living life and critiquing stereotypical media representations of Native people and cultures. At other times, the films exhibit imagery symbolizing a liberated consciousness, free from a contaminated imagination suppressing the textures and colors of our everyday experience of land and landscapes. Eve memorializes the strained and distant relationship contemporary life has to a directly connected spirit to nature. Simultaneously she heightens the reading we have of existence through audiovisual blessings and cleansings, from legacies of colonialism(s), and cycles of ecological collision and collapse. The films leaf through dynamics of heritage and generational knowledge, juxtaposing meditations on tradition(s), with, as Eve says, a "braiding" and "resurrecting", an ascending, and descending, into and beneath time, and its reality. - Diego Robles, programmer

Eve-Lauryn Little Shell LaFountain is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. She is a multimedia artist, filmmaker, and educator. Her work explores identity, history, Indigenous Futurism, feminism, ghosts, magic, and her mixed Native American and Jewish heritage through lens-based media and installations. She is a Mandel Institute Cultural Leadership Fellow, and has received support for her work from the Sundance Institute, Mike Kelley Foundation, Andy Warhol Foundation, Cousin Collective and more. She has exhibited her work in venues and festivals around the world. She holds a BA from Hampshire College, and a dual MFA in Film & Video and Photography & Media from CalArts.

LA Filmforum: Eve-Lauryn LaFountain - Conversation Pieces

Director Fritz Lang’s post-war espionage thriller follows Gary Cooper’s nuclear physicist from his lab working on the Manhattan Project to an Italian resistance unit on an OSS mission to rescue a dissident scientist forced to help the Nazis on their own atomic bomb. Lang delivers some outstanding action sequences (no one socks a Nazi quite like Gary Cooper) while later-blacklisted screenwriters, Ring Lardner Jr. and Albert Maltz, put a progressive spin on the film’s nuclear politics — “When are we going to be given a billion dollars to wipe out cancer?” decries Cooper’s physicist — alongside its message that resistance to fascism isn’t only necessary but a moral obligation.

In this mystery melodrama, the legacy of a “great man” of America is called into question after his sudden death in a suspicious car accident. Spencer Tracy is the grizzled veteran reporter who starts asking all the wrong questions of Katharine Hepburn’s grieving but suspicious widow. Donald Ogden Stewart’s script comes with a few paeans to American exceptionalism — ”You and I are free men today because centuries ago some unknown guy got an idea in his head that he was just as good as the guy who was bossing him” — in a story that decidedly suggests “it can happen here” as homegrown fascists wrap themselves in patriotic imagery and rhetoric.
