*The 21st Century Odyssey* is a video travelogue through love, liberatory technology, social and personal mythology, and the pleasures and rigors of making life into art told in part through the pixelated beauty of the videophone. Though rarely screened, it is a rich and resonant chapter in the legendary Barbara T. Smith’s careerlong experiments with machine innovation. Her partnership with Kate Johnson and EZTV documents an epic befitting their shared goals of evolving and synthesizing video art and performance art’s past and future. The film’s patient veneration of the quotidian alongside the grand coupled with the ache of long-term romantic longing re-embodies the interpretive act of translating this two-year-plus durational performance project into its video form.

The film sees Smith from 1991 through 1993 sending photo messages to her lover, physician Roy Walford, while he is sealed inside the Biosphere 2 and serving as its resident physician. Highlighting the newly-available and newly-aesthetically-permeable availability of transmissions via broadcast and teleconference by the Electronic Cafe International in Santa Monica, the film spans four continents and even the subject’s college reunion. Smith and Johnson’s resulting document of a durational performance is a stirring and strange tale of Smith as Odysseus. Unlike her inspiration, she can reach her (doctor) Penelope via semi-frequent messages. But the resulting tensions of their avant-garde and at-times intangible communication creates new permeations of distance-via-intimacy that are being newly defined as they happen, resonating profoundly in the world that these pioneers created for us. This is documentary as video art, love as performance piece, and a must-see for admirers of Smith, Johnson, and EZTV.

We are thrilled to present a special screening of David Cronenberg’s pitch-black Hollywood satire—a portrait of Los Angeles as an inferno of narcissism, greed and sexual perversity—whose polarizing reception upon release has led to its contemporary reappraisal as a modern camp classic.

This event is presented with *The Big One*, a print-exclusive literary magazine featuring emergent and established Los Angeles writers. Issue No. 4, “Wellness & Reinvention,” features an interview with novelist, screenwriter, and producer Bruce Wagner, and will be sold at the event.

Wagner’s darkly comedic depictions of the intersections of fame, desire, desperation, and metaphysics draw from his own experiences living in Los Angeles, delivering transgressive, surreal, and sometimes cynical narratives. He is a conduit of Hollywood lore, having gone from chauffeuring stars as a local limo driver himself to portray Robert Pattinson portraying the limo driver in *MAPS TO THE STARS*, a screenplay Wagner wrote twenty-three years prior to its release. He sat down with *The Big One* to discuss Los Angeles literature, his legacy, and the film:

“It was something I wrote out of utter exasperation… I wrote MAPS TO THE STARS when I felt stillborn. I felt that everything had died, in essence, so I wrote something like a dream journal. I wrote something that I felt would be impossible to make into a film. Not that it wasn’t cinematic, but that it didn&#8217;t cohere or imitate or feel remotely compatible with Hollywood movies and even as an independent or a foreign film.” – Bruce Wagner

*Cinema-ye Azad*, or Free Cinema, was an underground movement of filmmakers in Iran that began in 1969, with the explicit aim of creating a fully independent cinema opposed to the mainstream “Filmfarsi” in both form and content, methods and ideals. Where the better-known, contemporaneous Iranian New Wave predominantly consisted of foreign-educated, Tehran-based middle-class filmmakers, *Cinema-ye Azad *consisted of self-taught filmmakers, sharing resources and knowledge with one another to bring the possibility of cultural production to disadvantaged provinces. At its height, *Cinema-ye Azad* boasted hundreds of active members, a critical magazine and festivals around the country, but the dream was short-lived as the movement ceased activities after the revolution. Its works, however, are being rediscovered thanks to the dedication of curators and archivists in London and Iran. As part of this year's UCLA Celebration of Iranian Cinema, the Archive is pleased to present two screenings highlighting the films of two key *Cinema-ye Azad* figures, Nasib Nasibi and Behnam Jafari.

Every day, a young man plays his trumpet from the top of a half-finished building while facing the city. Ambiguous happenings around him suggest the outlines of what may lurk below the peaceful surface of society.

This satirical collage of Iranian cinema stages a confrontation between the ethos of the commercial “Filmfarsi” and the artistic ambitions of the New Wave cinema. In a direct reference to *Cinema-ye Azad*, the film ends with the arrest and exile of young amateur filmmakers from professional cinema.

This film follows the restless lives of two young pickpockets through the labyrinth of seedy streets and shadowy alleyways, in a world where every day ends in triumph or ruin.

A social portrait of two young lovers that reflects the larger prejudices of society.

In his cinematic debut, Saeed Poursamimi plays a former inmate who frees a genie from a bottle. After thousands of years of captivity in the bottle, the genie finds himself in a world that has been completely transformed by its people’s beliefs. The two embark on a bitter journey to find the remnants of the forgotten magical realm. Director Behnam Jafari uses stark visuals and provocative metaphors to explore the impossibility of relying on traditional myths in the face of a new world.

During the height of the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis, a busload of Iranian college students returning to the U.S. after a field trip in Canada are thrown into political and legal limbo when they’re refused entry at the border. A ripped-from-the-headlines urgency drives writer-director Parviz Sayyad’s *Checkpoint* as the students split along factional lines in their struggle to reclaim their rights and dignity. Executive producer Mary Apick also leads a committed ensemble cast that never loses sight of the fragile, individual humanity ever at risk amid grand ideological clashes.

Based on a short story by Anton Chekhov, *Dead End* plays with themes of voyeurism and surveillance in a society on the verge of radical transformation.

With its painterly, sun-dappled images and indelible use of Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 21, this 1960s art-house sensation is the most ravishing expression of Widerberg’s recurring theme of the tension between individual freedom and social responsibility.

Blending comedy, original music, live performance, and film, the production brings together performers from across The Miracle Project’s programs in a bold exploration of identity, performance, and self-acceptance.

_Unmasked_ will be presented in two performances on Sunday, June 14. Both performances feature the same core storyline while highlighting different members of The Miracle Project community through unique sketches, musical numbers, and performance pieces. Audience members are encouraged to attend both shows for the full experience and can join us for a cast celebration and community gathering between performances. With each iteration of these video compilations, we aim to showcase work from different generations, localities, and styles. Works shown in the Third Transmission span nearly 50 years, connecting 10 artists across 10 towns, 2 oceans, 3 countries. *“In 1974, Sveriges Radio in Stockholm invited members of the Swedish public to submit teleplay scripts dealing with the “future.” One of the scripts selected was by Bo Melander, a noted journalist working for The Gothenburg Times. I accepted to direct the play when it was chosen for production, and in January 1975 Bo and I worked on developing the script, deciding to concentrate on the nuclear reactor issue which was becoming a major political concern in Sweden in 1974. THE TRAP is set in the underground living quarters of a scientist working at an international nuclear waste station near the west coast of Sweden. It is the end of 1999, and the TV in the oppressive living room inhabited by John (the scientist), his wife, Margereta, and their son Peter, is proclaiming optimistic statements about the promise of the New Millennium. John’s brother Bertil, accompanied by young Bo, the son of a third brother – imprisoned by the Swedish authorities for ‘antisocial’ activities – arrives at the waste site to celebrate the new century; they are first seen via monitor screens – making their slow progress through the security checks. Their visit with John and his family is tense and soon breaks down. Bertil holds a political position completely opposed to that of his establishment brother, denounces the consumerist society which has led to the need for all the nuclear waste embedded in the nearby rocks, and argues bitterly with John, telling him that he and his colleagues are like caged rats, trapped within the confines of a system they defend blindly. Too angry to stay on, Bertil takes Bo and attempts to leave, but is arrested at a security checkpoint. In *French Wedding, Caribbean Style*, a supposedly joyful interracial wedding descends into chaos when long-buried prejudices and family secrets rise to the surface. Shot on self-reflexive MiniDV by the bride’s cocky younger brother, what begins as a lighthearted summer affair turns nightmarish as scandal threatens to destroy the unlikely couple’s big day.

The *Old Sorceress and the Valet* follows Eugénie and Armand, an elderly couple who have lived in Paris since 1921 as part of the wave of post-war immigration from Martinique. Eugénie, a former dancer with Josephine Baker’s Black Revue, has become a professional quimboiseuse, practising black magic for a white clientele. Armand, who had been a servant, is retired. Now, they are both old and bitter, still quarreling with each other. One day, they set out arm-in-arm for one last walk through the metropolis, confronting their past, their stifled dreams, and long-kept secrets.

Julius-Amédée Laou, born on February 9th, 1950, is a distinguished filmmaker, playwright, theatre director, and writer. Hailing from Paris with Martinican roots, Laou made his mark with the short films *Open Mic Solitaire* and *Mist Melodies in Paris*. He later expanded his cinematic vision with two notable feature films: *The Old Sorceress and the Valet* (1987) and *French Wedding, Caribbean Style* (2002).

A compelling voice representing the Caribbean diaspora, Laou masterfully blends sharp-witted comedy to unveil the stark contrasts of a Black individual's experience in France. His films, imbued with fervent outrage, range from the fiery and thought-provoking to the tranquil and comical.

Sandrews was a major cinema distributor and at that time a production company (they were producing two films by Susan Sontag); they had just premiered THE WAR GAME in Stockholm, and offered to produce any film I chose to make. Holiday is joined in conversation by Georgia Anne Muldrow–singer, songwriter, and producer whose father Ronald Muldrow was a jazz guitarist–and Imani Archer–emerging singer-songwriter, and the only daughter of D’Angelo. The evening will close with an in-progress showing of “D’Angelo Elegies,” a new dance in dialogue with the music and life of the late singer that Holiday has developed throughout the run of the exhibition in collaboration with dancer and choreographer Bernard Brown.

Lightstruck presents *Jordan Belson: Knowledge Beyond Words pgm I.*

On June 25 and July 9, Lightstruck is honored to present two evenings devoted to one of cinema's unparalleled visionaries – Jordan Belson – an artist and filmmaker whose singular body of work has justifiably been the subject of devoted contemplation and ecstatic appreciation for over six decades. Belson's films defy concrete description, which is part of their deep and personal appeal, hinting as they do at "a knowledge that is beyond words", as Belson once told writer and curator Raymond Foye (to whom we are greatly indebted for being able to present these programs). While his earliest films embodied more familiar aspects of mid-century non-objective visual art, the early 1960s marked a radical shift into intensely mystical and elusive imagery – achieved largely through Belson's own remarkable photographic techniques – to give miraculous form to the innermost regions of imagination and consciousness.

For our first program, Lightstruck is excited and honored to welcome independent curator and scholar Raymond Foye in person for an illustrated talk on Belson and his art, informed in part by their many conversations over the last five years of Belson’s life. In addition to organizing exhibits of Belson’s paintings and drawings, Foye has been working with the Belson estate to preserve and restore his films photochemically as well as digitally. Following the presentation, we are thrilled to project an exhilarating selection of seven beautiful new 16mm prints, courtesy of the Belson estate and Raymond Foye.

Following the introductory illustrated lecture, the films screening in this program are: Caravan (1952), Allures (1961), Phenomena (1965), Samadhi (1967), World (1970), Meditation (1971), and Chakra (1972).

THE SECRET LIVES OF BILL BARTELL + BORN INNOCENT: THE REDD KROSS STORY

Premiering on June 27, 1966, on ABC-TV, *Dark Shadows *(1966–71) represented an outré experiment in daytime television that became an unexpected breakout hit and evergreen cult classic. Created by horror-maestro Dan Curtis (*The Night Stalker*, *Trilogy of Terror*), the innovative soap opera, which initially struggled in the ratings, expanded greatly in popularity in its second year with the addition of a 175-year-old charismatic vampire character named Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid). As the eerily atmospheric series evolved to fuse gothic supernatural elements and romance into complex storylines, it developed a passionate youth following and became a pop culture phenomenon. In the process, the videotaped series earned the distinction of being the first soap to spawn a theatrical motion picture spin-off, *House of Dark Shadows* (1970), and several additional feature films and reboots. The beloved original series ran for over 1,200 episodes before its abrupt cancellation in 1971. In the ensuing decades, the aura surrounding* Dark Shadows *has only intensified, with the influential program enjoying nearly constant reruns in syndication, luring an influx of new viewers into the mysterious, shadow-drenched world of the wealthy Collins family of fictional Collinsport, Maine. 

Join us for a celebration of* Dark Shadows*, exactly 60 years to the day of its premiere, including the debut episode and rare archival footage. Before the screening, historian Jim Pierson will sign copies of *Dark Shadows Noir: Classic Black and White Photography from the Dan Curtis Productions Archive. *Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with *Dark Shadows *star, actor David Selby, and Jim Pierson.

They tramp the urban wasteland at night, from arcade to diner to another sad club scene, and soon sparks fly between the boys, too.
