Gordon Matta-Clark, the artist, urban explorer, and “anarchitect” most famous for the “building cuts” he performed on various decomposing structures in the 1970s, made 18 short films before his untimely death from cancer in 1978. Aside from walking through the buildings themselves, which have all since been demolished, film provides the ideal venue in which to experience Matta-Clark’s singular artistry. The power of the cut to create strange new juxtapositions, the epistemological faculty of an opening that introduces light to new planes — metaphorical connections between Matta-Clark’s work and the cinematic apparatus abound. This program collects six of his films shot between 1972 and 1976, documenting four building cuts, one formal experiment, and one car crash. In all of his work, Matta-Clark sought to expose the thinness of the boundaries that divide people, mediums, spaces, and ideas. With sledgehammer, chainsaw, and his own two feet, he punched through these walls with an urgency that has been increasingly felt in the decades since his passing, cutting new holes for light to pour in.

Created by trailblazing multi-hyphenate Keenen Ivory Wayans, the innovative series turned primetime into a cultural battlefield, uproariously harnessing satire and spectacle to explore issues of race, class and celebrity. In his book, *The Black Pack: Comedy, Race, and Resistance*, author Artel Great situates *In Living Color *within the broader lineage of Black sketch comedy, illuminating how the innovative series served as an industrial weapon, seizing time, space and cultural power, often forcing America to laugh at what it preferred to ignore. In the process, the hit series won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series in 1990.

One of the great unrealized theatrical productions of the twentieth century, ROBERT WILSON AND THE CIVIL WARS would have been the legendary avant-garde filmmaker’s magnum opus: a twelve-hour historical opera in six distinct parts, each rehearsed in a different country (Germany, France, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands and the U.S.) for a holistic performance at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Over the course of the project’s ill-fated conception, documentary director Howard Brookner follows Wilson, composers Philip Glass and David Byrne, and several production troupes as they seek to perfect an epic that encompasses the American Civil War, the life and death of Frederick the Great, and the unification of Italy, along with imagery from Frank L. Baum, Jules Verne and Mathew Brady. Struggling to procure timely funding and constantly negotiating with striking Italian theater unions, Wilson nonetheless proves himself a force of nature, determined to follow through on his outsize dream of a Gesamtkunstwerk that brilliantly fuses art and life.

A train compartment is a space where people are temporarily removed from their everyday lives. For a few hours or days, they form a fleeting community, their experiences unfolding according to a timetable. A train journey can be beautiful and magical, but also deeply dramatic—sometimes filled with hope for change, and at other times marked by a stark absence of it.

Throughout history, similar scenes repeat themselves in railway carriages: soldiers departing for war and returning wounded—or not at all—followed by waves of civilians, evacuees, prisoners of war, and the aftermath of conflict. Eventually, these moments give way once again to ordinary travel, until the cycle repeats.

*Trains* is an artistic exploration that expands the language of cinema while rebuilding the emotional connection between the viewer and archival reality.

Here Eddie Murphy stands at the center of the Black Pack as Prince Akeem, heir to the throne of Zamunda, who leaves royal luxury for Queens, New York, in search of love on his own terms. The most commercially successful Black comedy feature of its era, this blockbuster is also a case study in power and authorship, as Murphy gives a tour de force performance of multiple characters and earns a “story by” credit. *“THE JOURNEY was born directly out of a collapsed project in 1982, when I tried to organize another antinuclear war film, to be funded by Central TV in England, and working with a number of peace groups across the UK. I felt that THE WAR GAME was out-of-date, and I was concerned about the escalating nuclear arms race, that was allied to the US foreign policy of a nuclear war that would be limited to Europe. My idea was to create a series of scenes, again depicting the consequences of a nuclear attack on Britain, on a larger scale than THE WAR GAME, that would allow citizens across Britain to express their concerns via their involvement in the production of this project. However, Central TV withdrew its funding, on the grounds that the budget was becoming too large, and the project collapsed. After rethinking the scale of the project into a more global film dealing with the general silence on the burgeoning nuclear arms race, I appealed for funding to a number of international TV channels. Without exception, every TV channel that I contacted refused, even though I was only requesting support for filming an ultra low-cost segment in each country, where I would ask local people what they knew and felt about the world arms race. *

*“During the time while I had no funding from the professional sector, I happened to be showing THE WAR GAME to the world’s oldest peace movement association, the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (SPAS), in Stockholm. In May 1983, during its 100th anniversary congress, SPAS unanimously decided to support fund-raising for a new film about the nuclear threat. Based in Stockholm, and with initial funding from SPAS, I immediately began to involve the network of friends and acquaintances that I had acquired over many years of travelling and lecturing, to build an international fund-raising drive for the new film, and to start research in those parts of the world where I would organize local productions groups for the actual filming.*

Entrenched in the devastating reality of postwar Japan, Naruse’s masterpiece adapts Fumiko Hayashi’s final completed novel to trace the lives of two repatriated lovers reunited in the ruins of a defeated nation. The wartime affair of Tomioka, a married Forestry Ministry officer (Masayuki Mori) and typist Yukiko (Hideko Takamine) continues in the postwar rubble, but their bleak existence pales against the faraway romance that took place in French Indochina. Reluctant to leave his wife, the lecherous Tomioka comes and goes at his leisure to visit Yukiko, who clings to him desperately, propping up the vestiges of their long-lost passion over the course of years. Takamine’s heartbreaking performance is perhaps her finest hour, a role of sheer emotional magnitude that bears an agonizing love, drawn from the fading memory of what once was.

Chantal Akerman somewhat disowned this unfinished film, in which the beautiful, lithe Claire Wauthion plays the mother of a sweet young girl, Daphné, with whom she reads Babar, prepares lunch and tries on dresses. Privately, with Akerman as a kind of mute but receptive presence, Wauthion confides her own sense of jealousy and disappointment toward her husband (“He really is such a baby”) and casts a critical eye on her body, citing a litany of physical shortcomings in a nearly five-minute single take that Akerman would repurpose for her 2007 video installation “In the Mirror.”

In its irreverent use of (new) Nouvelle Vague, musical, melodrama and nature documentary, ATTENBERG symbolically visualizes a change in generation and perspective as a father and daughter gently negotiate their individual rites of passage. The film follows a visionary architect who has come home to die in the vanishing industrial town that is his legacy to his daughter. Meanwhile, his daughter (played by Ariane Labed, in a performance that won her the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival) is exploring the mysteries of kissing with her girlfriend, and the beyond with a visiting engineer. Tsangari’s film—with a soundtrack featuring Françoise Hardy and Suicide—is poised between sincerity and hilarity, tradition and experimentation.
