Animation is a special medium within the spectrum of filmmaking, an artistic avenue where truly anything is possible. It can be made collaboratively with big teams, and can adhere to traditional narrative filmmaking principles, or it can be made by a single person and truly eschew any rules. It can make manifest the imaginary while also showing its own handmade analogue craft in every frame.

The independently produced animated short is a special format within the medium. The films in this program exist outside of the boundaries of the commercial industry, and genuinely function as art for art’s sake. They come from a diverse range of artists from all over the world (including the United States, where, without much support for the arts, it is incredibly difficult to create animated shorts), featuring a wide variety of techniques, from tactile stop motion made by veterans of the craft to cutting-edge 3D by young mavericks that are giving the big studios a run for their money. And beyond the medium, they are just unique, compelling films made by radical filmmakers.

I'm incredibly excited to present these films to an LA audience. In a time when organic creative processes feel constantly challenged, it’s inspiring to remember what’s still possible.

Long out-of-print and beautifully restored, the late Filipino master Lino Brocka delivers one of his most enthralling films with this queer coming-of-age story set in Manila's bustling gay clubs, which demonstrates Brocka's flair for socially conscious melodrama with pulp provocation. The film follows ingenuous teenage sex worker Pol (Allan Paule) as he leaves his small town to go to the city, where he gets hired as an erotic dancer—meeting new friends, lovers, and potential enemies. Featuring extended, seductive dance sequences that pulse with sweat and longing, the film is at once salacious and wonderfully sincere, ever sensitive to the fragile dreams of youth. With his sharp eye for class-based exploitation, Brocka doesn't shy away from tragedy in this bold, highly entertaining depiction of the realities of sex work. -BR

Frank Sinatra is Frankie Machine, a hustler and recovering drug addict. Frankie decides to go straight and pursue his dream of becoming a musician, but the more time he spends on the outside the harder it becomes to resist the temptation of the needle. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM is the darkest noir gets, bolstered by Otto Preminger’s unflinching direction and Sam Leavitt’s cinematography, which renders every moment of Frankie’s sobriety a claustrophobic nightmare. The real highlight of the film, however, is Sinatra’s Oscar-nominated performance. He’s remarkable as the weak-willed drummer, utilizing his slight physique and baby-blue eyes to haunting effect. Featuring Eleanor Parker and Kim Novak as the devil and angel, respectively, on Frankie’s shoulders.

Disgraced ex-cop Dave Burke (Ed Begley) masterminds a piece-of-cake bank robbery in upstate New York, but to pull it off he requires the cooperation of two dangerously mismatched cohorts: hot-headed redneck war veteran Earle Slater (Robert Ryan) and gambling addict jazzman Johnny Ingram (Harry Belafonte); their racist antagonism threatens to thwart a seemingly fool-proof plan. Silent producer Belafonte hired blacklisted screenwriter Abraham Polonsky to adapt William P. McGivern’s novel, specifically to subvert the sanctimony of THE DEFIANT ONES (1958), a “feel good” movie about racism. Jennifer Jason Leigh is a Jean Harlow obsessed housewife trying to free her loser husband from the clutches of a local gangster. She kidnaps the wife of a politician as leverage, but things get complicated when the two women develop a friendship and discover just how crooked their city has become. All this on the day before the 1934 Democratic primary election, no less. Shot with painstaking attention to period detail, director Robert Altman enlists real musicians to play venerated jazz figures like Ben Webster, Lester Young and Mary Lou Williams. Their performances, captured by Altman in a concert-documentary style, give the film an intoxicating sense of excitement despite its bleak conclusion. Featuring a sensational late-period turn by Harry Belafonte as the incredibly named “Seldom Seen.”

Originally released July 31, 1955

The lone Technicolor offering of the festival has Jack Webb as a Prohibition-era bandleader who refuses to bend the knee to a local bootlegger. The actor maintains the same ironclad will that made him a star on DRAGNET, but PETE KELLY’S BLUES, which he also directed, ventures further into the darkness than the procedural franchise ever could. The gangland violence and speakeasy musical numbers are skillfully recreated, especially when they collide in the astonishing final act. Webb also assembles a Murderers’ Row of supporting talent from noir stalwarts Edmond O’Brien and Lee Marvin to vocal powerhouses Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald. Lee, in only her third onscreen appearance, scored a 1956 Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her performance as a boozy torch singer.

Singin’ in the Rain

Considered the first Chicano feature, Efraín Gutiérrez’s landmark independent film *Please, Don’t Bury Me Alive! *(*¡Por favor, no me entierren vivo!*) was believed lost for years until UCLA Distinguished Professor Chon Noriega tracked down the director and relocated elements to the UCLA Film & Television Archive, where collaborative restoration efforts brought the film back to life.

Incorporating Chicano forms of popular theater and music, the bilingual film offers a rhythmic, in-depth look at 1970s-era South Texas Chicano culture, as its central character questions his place in a society that undervalues Latinos, so many of whom had been killed in the Vietnam War. A historic, influential hit in regional theaters, the film’s tremendous impact on Chicano cinema was further cemented in 2014, when it was named to the National Film Registry for its historic, cultural, and artistic significance. Today, in a moment when visibility itself can feel precarious, the film’s call to live boldly in defiance of erasure resonates as powerfully as it did 50 years ago.

You probably know the plot, but just in case: neurotic clownfish Marlin (Albert Brooks) sets off on a wild journey across the ocean when his son Nemo is captured by divers, in the process encountering pacifist sharks, surfer-dude turtles, and a forgetful blue tang named Dory (a pitch-perfect Ellen DeGeneres) who becomes his loyal traveling companion. Meanwhile, Nemo ends up in a fish tank at a dentist’s office, full of other creatures planning their own jail break. Made with an impressive array of nonprofessional actors and shot on location at a campus in Los Angeles, the film follows Isaiah (Isaiah Brody) who films himself on an iPhone as he experiences the daily indignities of being in high school. A bourgeois middle-aged dentist named Veronica (MARIA ONETTO) drives alone on a dirt road, becomes distracted, and runs over something.  Immediately she becomes disoriented, unmoored from her identity and reality, like a sleepwalker who’s actually awake.  As the week go on, she becomes obsessed with the possibility that she may have killed someone: a young boy whose body is found in a roadside canal.  Veronica tries to piece together what happened while her husband systematically erases her tracks.  A chilling parable about a woman in shock, Lucrecia Martel’s third feature explores the intricacies of class and the role of women in a male-dominated society.

**About the Restoration:******

Restoration carried out from the 4K scan of the original 35 mm camera negative, a first-generation internegative, and the original digital sound mix. Reference elements included a duplicate negative and a vintage 35 mm release print. The process included digital cleaning to remove the imperfections of time and color correction to restore the original brightness, contrast, and chromatic values. Effects created in the digital intermediate were preserved.

Restoration produced by Rei Pictures, with the support of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Additional support and organization by Strand Releasing USA. Carried out at Cubic Restoration in Buenos Aires. Color grading was led by Gustavo Biazzi, under the consultation of cinematographer Bárbara Álvarez; digital image restoration by Margarita Moscoso; sound work by Federico Esquerro; and mastering by Julián Giulianelli. The project was coordinated by Fernando Madedo, and the entire process was supervised by director Lucrecia Martel.

For the first time since its creation in 1979, *For Whose Entertainment *by renowned filmmaker, artist, and educator Ben Caldwell has its first public screening.

The film is a critique of Black comedians and their work, in which Caldwell asks who Black comedians are trying to appeal to and entertain most: Black audiences or white audiences? Through the use of appropriated footage and collage, the filmmaker deconstructs Blackness in entertainment in the 1960s and 1970s. *For Whose Entertainment* brings together important figures in Black film and scholarship, including documentary filmmaker St. Clair Bourne and cinema scholar Teshome Gabriel, to discuss issues around Black representation in film and television. Caldwell’s film oeuvre and life’s work is built around psychic healing for Black people, a self-mandate formed after serving as a soldier in the Vietnam War.

*Jack Smith (1932–1989) was a New York-based filmmaker, photographer, and actor known for his pioneering influence in experimental filmmaking and performance art. Smith moved to New York City in 1953, where he attended film classes at the City College of New York, finding employment as a photographer. He studied dance with Ruth St. Denis, direction with Lee Strasberg, and worked as an actor and assistant with Ken Jacobs before shooting his first film, Scotch Tape, in 1959. His best-known film, Flaming Creatures (1963), was confiscated by the New York Police Department and banned throughout the United States due to nudity and charges of obscenity. Smith never again created a finished artwork. From the late 1960s into the 1980s, Smith focused on theater and performance, and combined live happenings with screenings of films and slideshows. Throughout his life, Smith pioneered a radical artistic practice that challenged the economic conditions of late capitalism, fixed definitions of gender and sexuality, and the production and dissemination of art itself. Smith’s influence pervades experimental filmmaking and performance art in the US to this day, and is present in the works of Andy Warhol, John Waters, Laurie Anderson, and Cindy Sherman, among countless others. Join us in the microcinema for a local piece of musical history. This homegrown concert film directed by **Charlie Weinmann** documents the August 20, 2025 performance by guitarist/bandleader **Jeff Parker** and his **ETA IVtet** (with drummer **Jay Bellerose**, bassist **Anna Butterss**, and saxophonist **Josh Johnson**) at Highland Park, Los Angeles venue **Lodge Room**, which yielded the band&#8217;s forthcoming album ***Happy Today*** (to be released by **International Anthem** and **Nonesuch Records** on May 15, 2026).
*Happy Today* is the ETA IVtet’s first recording made outside of the now-shuttered, widely-beloved Highland Park, Los Angeles micro-club ETA. Part laboratory, part low-stakes proving ground, ETA was where the band’s collective sound coalesced over the course of a storied seven-year Monday night residency that yielded two critically-acclaimed records — 2022’s *Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy* and 2024’s *The Way Out of Easy* — the latter of which debuted #1 on the *Billboard* Contemporary Jazz Charts, and was called &#8220;a testament to the power of live jazz&#8221; by *The Guardian*.

With *Happy Today*, the ETA IVtet&#8217;s sound — honed in such an intimate setting — is scaled up for a much larger audience and space at Lodge Room. But the essential formula of the music remains the same, and has the same hypnotic, deeply-tuned listening effect. The almost alchemical musical communication between Parker, Bellerose, Butterss, and Johnson creates a feeling of connection not only between the band but also between the band and their audience – an ongoing trust exercise that invites listeners to become part of the exchange, and experience the joy of deep listening.

A shadow-laden, almost noirish capture of the band in its full sprawling glory, Weinmann’s *Happy Today* film makes the joyful experience of Parker&#8217;s now-legendary, ever-elusive ETA IVtet – a band who only ever played at a single small Los Angeles venue for the first seven years of their existence, and have only played a few shows since that venue closed at the end of 2023 – viewable and widely-accessible for the first time.
