Humphrey Bogart is an aimless fisherman who gets drawn into the growing French Resistance in Martinique. Lauren Bacall is the American songbird who seduces him and subsequently reawakens his sense of purpose. Ernest Hemingway’s self-described “worst” novel is gleefully translated to the screen by director Howard Hawks, who ditches most of the plot to play up the nuclear chemistry between his two leads. Sure, there’s a lot borrowed from 1942’s CASABLANCA, but you’d be hard-pressed to hold back a smile whenever Bacall teases Bogie or tutors him on the importance of whistling. It’s a debut performance for the ages, bolstered by the memorable tunes that Bacall sings alongside co-star/songwriter Hoagy Carmichael. Featuring a Walter Brennan character that can best be described as a “Walter Brennan type.”

The tumultuous life of dancer-singer Ruth Etting (Doris Day, in a revelatory performance) gets a vivid retelling in this vivacious and vitriolic biopic that is equal parts lavish musical and noir-stained psychodrama. Daniel Fuchs (HOLLOW TRIUMPH, CRISS CROSS) won a “Best Writing, Motion Picture Story” Oscar for this tale of the 1920s singing and dancing sensation who makes a Faustian bargain for fame and glory—becoming a protégé to Chicago gangster Marty Snyder (Jimmy Cagney, in an Oscar-nominated performance). The role is such a scintillating showcase for Doris Day’s talents that it’s hard to believe Ava Gardner was the studio’s first choice for the starring role until Cagney convinced producer Joe Pasternak that Day, borrowed from Warner Bros., was the perfect choice. Many of Etting’s greatest hits are performed by Day, including “Ten Cents a Dance,” “You Made Me Love You,” “Stay on the Right Side, Sister” as well as “I’ll Never Stop Loving You,” a 1956 Oscar nominee for Best Original Song.

There’s a perverse delight in watching party gossip spread like wildfire, especially when you know the source will get burned, but ALL NIGHT LONG isn’t just a slick meditation on celebrity. The film captures musical icons Dave Brubeck, John Scott and Charles Mingus in their prime, making it an invaluable time capsule of the London jazz scene in the early 1960s. When Oscar is killed by police during a bust gone bad, his spirit journeys from the past &#8212; where he sees his parents before their deaths &#8212; to the present &#8212; where he witnesses his own autopsy &#8212; and then to the future, where he looks out for his sister from beyond the grave. Give yourself over to this experiential head-trip and leave the real world behind!

**About the score/soundtrack**:

*Enter the Void* is the 14th installment of Vidiots’ & Synth History’s *Iconic Scores* screening series, which highlights pioneering scores and soundtracks in electronic music!

The soundtrack for *Enter the Void *blends musique concrète, experimental, and electroacoustic styles. Noé would collaborate again with Thomas Bangalter (of legendary electronic duo Daft Punk), who also scored *Irréversible*. Bangalter was originally approached to create an original score for the film, however due to his involvement scoring *Tron: Legacy*, he&#8217;d take on the role of sound effects director instead, providing a library of ambient sounds and experimental samples which Noé then compiled.

One source of inspiration was &#8220;Revolution 9” by The Beatles, a collage of sounds that Noé described in The Quietus as a work &#8220;where you catch the beginning of a note, or of a melody and then it&#8217;s already somewhere else.&#8221; The film includes a recording from electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire (BBC Radiophonic Workshop) of Bach&#8217;s &#8220;Air on the G String”, *ANS *by Coil which utilizes the rare, photoelectric ANS synthesizer (if you came to our screening of *Solaris* you might remember that composer Eduard Artemyev also used this!), Throbbing Gristle’s &#8220;Hamburger Lady,” LFO’s “Freak”, nearly every part of electroacoustic musician Jean-Claude Éloy&#8217;s compositions *Shânti* and *Gaku-no-Michi, *Toshiya Tsunoda&#8217;s &#8220;Music for Baby&#8221;, Alvin Lucier&#8217;s &#8220;Music for Gamelan Instruments, Microphones, Amplifiers and Loudspeakers&#8221;, works by Denis Smalley, Lullatone, Zbigniew Karkowski, and Thomas Bangalter‘s own track &#8220;Désaccords,” originally composed for *Irréversible*.

Best known for his avant-garde meta-documentary *Symbiopsychotaxiplasm*, William Greaves (1926–2014) was also the director of over 100 documentary films, the majority focused on African American history, politics, and culture.

NATIONTIME is the long-lost film that William Greaves made about the National Black Political Convention of 1972, when 10,000 black politicians, activists and artists went to Gary, Indiana, to forge a national unity platform in advance of the Republican and Democratic presidential conventions. The delegates included a wide array of political thinkers — Black Panther co-founder Bobby Seale, Pan-Africanist Amiri Baraka, PUSH founder Jesse Jackson, elected officials Ron Dellums, Charles Diggs, Walter Fauntroy, Richard Hatcher, Carl McCall, plus key women in the fight for racial equality -- Coretta Scott King, Betty Shabazz, Fannie Lou Hamer and Queen Mother Moore (who was arguing for reparations). Entertainers Harry Belafonte, Dick Gregory, Isaac Hayes and Richard Roundtree lent their star quality and entertained the crowds. Sidney Poitier & Harry Belafonte narrate the film.

One of the most powerful films Greaves ever made, this is the director’s original 80-minute version that was never released. Found in a Pittsburgh warehouse in 2018, the 48-year-old negative was painstakingly restored by IndieCollect under the supervision of Louise Greaves, the director’s widow and filmmaking partner. Lightstruck is elated to present two full evenings of rarely screened animated shorts from one of the most significant centers of experimental animation production and creativity in the history of the medium: Poland. Spanning the early 1960s to the late 1980s, these two programs (March 26 and April 16) will showcase an incredibly eclectic selection focusing on little-known masterworks and deep-cut revelations, all screening in recent restorations.

Poland has an extraordinary animation history marked by radical experimentation in technique and texture, investigating dark and complex themes inspired by social critique and surrealist visions alike. Spanning stop motion, cutout, cel, paint on glass, and hand-drawn approaches, these programs extend to include exceptional techniques such as Zbig Rybczyński’s hyper-complex optical printing, Piotr Dumała’s exquisite renderings on plaster slabs, and Julian Antonisz’s unhinged cameraless animation produced on ingenious, visionary devices of his own making. A morbid and uneasy humor often punctuates these works, which pulse with rich, emotional, and dramatic narratives and themes matched only by the exceptional imagination and talents of their authors.

We selected the films for these programs with an emphasis on shorts not generally available on home media, and spanning a particularly diverse array of styles, aesthetics, techniques, and sensibilities. Widely celebrated artists like Rybczyński, Antonisz, Ryszard Czekała, and Jerzy Kucia will be represented by lesser known (but magnificent) offerings, while deeply memorable obscurities from Jacek Kasprzycki, Zofia Oraczewska, Ryszard Antoniszczak, and Ewa Bibańska will further illuminate Poland’s incredible spectrum of animation genius.

Shadow Kitchen returns to Coaxial Arts with Animation Spring Mix: a super bloom of eight animated short films made by Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artists. These works demonstrate the visually diverse nature of animation made by filmmakers with tactile backgrounds in painting, illustration and sculpture. Whether the films are non-fiction, observational, or revealing the surreal and emotional world behind the veil of everyday experience, they are painstakingly created frame by frame. These are unique and tender films blending hand-drawn, painted, printed, digital and collaged storytelling forms.

Part of "Worlds Apart: The Films of Athina Rachel Tsangari," a complete retrospective of the Greek director's films presented by Acropolis Cinema and MUBI and running from April 17 - May 9 at 2220 Arts + Archives, Vidiots, and the Los Feliz 3.

Greek filmmaker Athina Rachel Tsangari, who deconstructed human behavior within bounded communities in *Attenberg* and *Chevalier*, sets her sights on entirely new environs in *Harvest*, which takes place in a remote village in medieval England.

Adapted from the acclaimed novel by British writer Jim Crace, Tsangari’s film stars Caleb Landry Jones as Walter Thirsk, the former childhood friend and manservant of the village’s weak-willed landowner, Master Kent (Harry Melling). Marked by superstition and the scapegoating of outsiders, the town’s denizens fall under new threat after Kent’s iron-fisted city cousin comes into possession of the land, with new plans for agricultural profit. Shot in the sun-dappled Scottish countryside with natural light by cinematographer Sean Price Williams, Tsangari’s most ambitious work to date is both carnal and cerebral, a multifaceted reflection on man’s relationship to the land, rich in atmospherics and thematic resonance. Created during his time at the UCLA Animation Workshop, Robert Abel’s *Freight Yard **Symphony *presents a sensorial impression of a commercial rail yard, in which the destruction of semiotics makes way for a new language of rhythm, where alphabetical and numerical language indicators become purely textural amongst the frenzied jazz score. Using photo collage and paper craft, Abel’s early modernist work showcases the immense talent of this future pioneer of visual effects.

In Chel White’s *Choreography for the Copy Machine (Photocopy Cha Cha), *machine and human attempt to understand each other’s dissonant identities through the glass-plate barrier of a photocopy machine. This barrier, reminiscent of zoo or aquarium glass windows, distorts and abstracts to create a half-truth. Chel White straddles the line between sensual and grotesque representations of the human body, juxtaposed with the mundane artifacts that scaffold daily life, such as keys, currency, tools and playing cards.

Michel Gondry’s *The Science of Sleep *synthesizes live action and animation to emphasize dissatisfaction with reality, and the lure of imagination. Made in the age of CGI pipelines overwhelmingly contributing to special effects in the future film industry, Gondry’s trademark whimsical style prioritizes practical effects, taking a minimal approach to visual effects. Blurring the lines between real life and fantasy, this film invites us to experience the impossible.

Comics O'Clock: A Comic Reading (4/17)

Located on the Pacific Rim, LACMA is the largest art museum in the western United States, with a collection of more than 150,000 objects that illuminate 6,000 years of artistic expression across the globe. Committed to showcasing a multitude of art histories, LACMA exhibits and interprets works of art from new and unexpected points of view that are informed by the region’s rich cultural heritage and diverse population. LACMA’s spirit of experimentation is reflected in its work with artists, technologists, and thought leaders as well as in its regional, national, and global partnerships to share collections and programs, create pioneering initiatives, and engage new audiences.

As we count down to the upcoming World Cup, this outdoor screening invites audiences to revisit iconic moments from soccer history. Bring friends, family, and a picnic and experience the beautiful game on the big screen in a communal, joyful setting. *Pelé *chronicles the life of the Brazilian football player Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé. The documentary looks back at the extraordinary period when Pelé, the only player to win three World Cup titles, went from a young superstar in 1958 to a national hero, amidst a radical and turbulent era in Brazilian history. The film charts Pelé’s remarkable journey to becoming the "King of Football" and leading his nation’s team to their historic win at the 1970 World Cup. With rare and exclusive filmed access to Pelé himself, the film emotionally showcases the star reflecting upon his impressive career.

The documentary also includes rare archive and interviews from former legendary team-mates at Santos Futebol Clube and the Brazilian national team, including Zagallo, Amarildo, and Jairzinho, as well as extraordinary testimonials from family members, journalists, artists and other personalities who witnessed the golden age of Brazilian football.

Join us on the Catbus for one of cinema&#8217;s most magical and beloved experiences that no one of any age can deny. While certainly not the first film to come out of Studio Ghibli, *My Neighbor Totoro* is often considered to be the studio and director Hayao Miyazaki’s first animated masterpiece. A touching story about two sisters who befriend the wood spirits in rural Japan, *My Neighbor Totoro* is an endearing fable centered on childhood wonder, family, imagination, and the importance of taking care of nature. It’s almost as if the film was made specifically to overwhelm the viewer with good vibes, and it’s hard not to fall in love with this lush, magical world of trolls wearing leaf hats and a bus that’s also a cat. There’s a reason Totoro has become the mascot of Studio Ghibli, and one of the cuddliest-looking creatures in animation history.

Penelope Spheeris’ 1972 UCLA thesis film features Jennifer Michaels and Dana Reuben in Warholian docufiction. Fascinated by society’s degenerates, Spheeris employs loosely scripted reenactment as critique. Turning tricks, seducing trade and performing gender, Michaels and Reuben mock straight culture from its fringes. Michaels, an iconic trans actress who worked with Pat Rocco on *Sex and the Single Gay* (1970) and starred in *Changes* (1970), lends a particularly notable performance. The film was preserved by the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Academy Film Archive in 2012.—*Wilde Davis*

*A Little Stiff* doesn’t end where it begins so much as it ends where it’s conceived. In this precursor to Caveh Zahedi’s later autobiographical present-tense documentaries, the cast play themselves as they reenact roughly the same unrequited infatuation between Zahedi and McKim that led to the film’s own production. As Zahedi wanders around UCLA’s Arts building, feeds peanuts to squirrels with his friend Greg Watkins, and plunges himself further into a state of longing, we observe the mundanities and ecstatic moments of Zahedi’s spiral through intensely naturalistic performances. Shot on a shoestring budget, *A Little Stiff* feels like a mumblecore *The* *Sorrows of Young Werther.—Noah Brockman*

This is a hands class on with sharp tools and Sharpies and is intended for beginners 14 years and older. American-born Ugandan actor, writer, filmmaker, and playwright Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine will be present to discuss his film and its expansive journey with a special guest.

On April 24, 2002, filmmaker Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine’s car broke down in the small town of Mbirizi, Uganda. While waiting for it to be repaired he stumbled upon a small photo studio and met photographer Kibaate Aloysius Ssalongo, whose work spanned from the late 1950s to his death in 2006. This chance encounter turned into a 22-year journey documenting and exploring Kibaate’s life and photography and the profound impact it had on Ntare’s life and the lives of the entire community he documented. Executive produced by Steven Soderbergh, this intimate, nuanced documentary about the transformative power of photography was named best documentary at the Africa International Film Festival and won the Audience Award at the Pan African Film Festival.

Other Music was an influential and uncompromising New York City record store that was vital to the city’s early 2000s indie music scene. But when the store is forced to close its doors due to rent increases, the homogenization of urban culture, and the shift from CDs to downloadable and streaming music, a cultural landmark is lost. Through vibrant storytelling, the documentary captures the record store’s vital role in the musical and cultural life of the city, and highlights the artists whose careers it helped launch including Vampire Weekend, Animal Collective, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, William Basinski, Neutral Milk Hotel, Sharon Van Etten, Yo La Tengo and TV On The Radio.

The Man with the Iron Fists in 35mm

Vidiots is celebrating **Record Store Day** and we are thrilled to welcome multi-hyphenate icon **RZA** for a killer night of kung-fu including the rarely screened and influential martial arts classic *The Mystery of Chess Boxing*.

The original Ghostface Killer is on the loose!  A vicious villain with an unstoppable five element technique, Ghostface is killing off all his old rivals. Meanwhile, a young student tries to learn kung fu and is taken under the wing of an old chess master. The basics of chess prove to be the same as the basics of fighting, and eventually the heroes will have to fight Ghostface Killer, who verbally insults his opponents as he annihilates them. Written, directed and produced by Joseph Kuo (*Seven Grandmasters, 18 Bronzemen*) *The Mystery of Chess Boxing* is widely regarded as one of the greatest kung fu films, and an obvious favorite of the Wu Tang Clan.

Gordon Matta-Clark, the artist, urban explorer, and “anarchitect” most famous for the “building cuts” he performed on various decomposing structures in the 1970s, made 18 short films before his untimely death from cancer in 1978. Aside from walking through the buildings themselves, which have all since been demolished, film provides the ideal venue in which to experience Matta-Clark’s singular artistry. The power of the cut to create strange new juxtapositions, the epistemological faculty of an opening that introduces light to new planes — metaphorical connections between Matta-Clark’s work and the cinematic apparatus abound. This program collects six of his films shot between 1972 and 1976, documenting four building cuts, one formal experiment, and one car crash. In all of his work, Matta-Clark sought to expose the thinness of the boundaries that divide people, mediums, spaces, and ideas. With sledgehammer, chainsaw, and his own two feet, he punched through these walls with an urgency that has been increasingly felt in the decades since his passing, cutting new holes for light to pour in.

In 1970s Iran, Marjane &#8216;Marji&#8217; Satrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah&#8217;s defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own.

Premiering in 1990, *In Living Color* exploded onto the Fox Television Network, reinvigorating the sketch comedy genre by showcasing a multiracial ensemble unafraid of controversy. Created by trailblazing multi-hyphenate Keenen Ivory Wayans, the innovative series turned primetime into a cultural battlefield, uproariously harnessing satire and spectacle to explore issues of race, class and celebrity. In his book, *The Black Pack: Comedy, Race, and Resistance*, author Artel Great situates *In Living Color *within the broader lineage of Black sketch comedy, illuminating how the innovative series served as an industrial weapon, seizing time, space and cultural power, often forcing America to laugh at what it preferred to ignore. In the process, the hit series won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series in 1990.

Helping to launch a breakout cast of highly gifted comedians that included David Alan Grier, Daymon Wayans, Kim Wayans, Tommy Davison, Jamie Foxx and Jim Carrey, *In Living Color *introduced a lasting lexicon of original characters and catchphrases to pop culture, from Homey D. Clown (“Homey, don’t play that”) to Men on Film (“two snaps up”) that continue to resonate long after the series' final broadcast on Fox in 1994.

Join us in the microcinema for one of the most mesmerizing films in recent history, *Trains* &#8211; a dazzling found-footage documentary composed entirely of archival materials, creating a collective portrait of people in 20th-century Europe—capturing their hopes, desires, dramas, and tragedies. With no dialogue and a hypnotic score, you can&#8217;t help but become entranced by this meditative cinematic experience.

A train compartment is a space where people are temporarily removed from their everyday lives. For a few hours or days, they form a fleeting community, their experiences unfolding according to a timetable. A train journey can be beautiful and magical, but also deeply dramatic—sometimes filled with hope for change, and at other times marked by a stark absence of it.

Throughout history, similar scenes repeat themselves in railway carriages: soldiers departing for war and returning wounded—or not at all—followed by waves of civilians, evacuees, prisoners of war, and the aftermath of conflict. Eventually, these moments give way once again to ordinary travel, until the cycle repeats.

*Trains* is an artistic exploration that expands the language of cinema while rebuilding the emotional connection between the viewer and archival reality.

This time, we are showcasing the work of Devonté Hynes, also known as Blood Orange, a multi-faceted musician and visual artist who, in his self-directed videos, has developed a gorgeous and highly personal visual universe to accompany his musical output. Devonté has also directed work for Beck and Mykki Blanco, and composed the scores for films like Palo Alto, Queen & Slim, Passing, Mainstream, Master Gardener, and the upcoming The Invite. Join us for a program of music videos selected by Devonté Hynes, alongside a career-spanning discussion about the relationship between music and moving images.

The Directors Series is a celebration of the artistry of music videos and those who make them. As the music video continues to change and mutate in unknowable directions, we want to take stock of the directors and art we love, presenting hand-picked collections of videos in a format rare to the music video: theatrically, with a live audience, and with the filmmakers on hand to discuss their work.

Robert Townsend pens a soulful love letter to Black popular music in this film loosely inspired by Motown-era vocal groups. It follows a fictional quintet from 1960s chart success through industry exploitation, infighting and addiction.

Here Eddie Murphy stands at the center of the Black Pack as Prince Akeem, heir to the throne of Zamunda, who leaves royal luxury for Queens, New York, in search of love on his own terms. The most commercially successful Black comedy feature of its era, this blockbuster is also a case study in power and authorship, as Murphy gives a tour de force performance of multiple characters and earns a “story by” credit. There&#8217;s a single piece of land around Flagstone with water on it, and rail baron Morton (Gabriele Ferzetti) aims to have it, knowing the new railroad will have to stop there. He sends his henchman Frank (Henry Fonda) to scare the land&#8217;s owner, McBain (Frank Wolff), but Frank kills him instead and pins it on a known bandit, Cheyenne (Jason Robards). Meanwhile, a mysterious gunslinger with a score to settle (Charles Bronson) and McBain&#8217;s new wife, Jill (Claudia Cardinale), arrive in town.

Tonight's show: LADY FROM SHANGHAI Michael O'Hara, against his better judgement, hires on as a crew member of Arthur Bannister's yacht, sailing to San Francisco. They pick up Grisby, Bannister's law partner, en route. Bannister has a wife, Elsa, who seems to like Michael much better than she likes her husband. After they dock in Sausalito, Michael goes along with Grisby's weird plan to fake his (Grisby's) murder so he can disappear untailed. He wants the $5000 Grisby has offered, so he can run off with Elsa. But Grisby turns up actually murdered, and Michael gets blamed for it. Somebody set him up, but it is not clear who or how. Bannister (the actual murderer?) defends Michael in court

Acclaimed Argentinean filmmaker Lucrecia Martel (ZAMA, THE HEADLESS WOMAN) takes a sweeping approach to this tragic true story, triangulating the murder trial of three men, the lives of activist Chocobar and his fellow Chuchagasta people, and the centuries-old, colonialist legacy of land and property theft across Latin America.

This screening will be followed by a conversation with **Lucrecia Martel **and Director of Photography **Ernesto de Carvalho**. Vidiots is thrilled to welcome the legendary and luminous filmmaker **Lucrecia Martel** for a very special evening featuring the new 4K Restoration of her mesmerizing mystery *The Headless Woman*.

A bourgeois middle-aged dentist named Veronica (MARIA ONETTO) drives alone on a dirt road, becomes distracted, and runs over something.  Immediately she becomes disoriented, unmoored from her identity and reality, like a sleepwalker who’s actually awake.  As the week go on, she becomes obsessed with the possibility that she may have killed someone: a young boy whose body is found in a roadside canal.  Veronica tries to piece together what happened while her husband systematically erases her tracks.  A chilling parable about a woman in shock, Lucrecia Martel’s third feature explores the intricacies of class and the role of women in a male-dominated society.

**About the Restoration:******

Restoration carried out from the 4K scan of the original 35 mm camera negative, a first-generation internegative, and the original digital sound mix. Reference elements included a duplicate negative and a vintage 35 mm release print. The process included digital cleaning to remove the imperfections of time and color correction to restore the original brightness, contrast, and chromatic values. Effects created in the digital intermediate were preserved.

Restoration produced by Rei Pictures, with the support of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Additional support and organization by Strand Releasing USA. Carried out at Cubic Restoration in Buenos Aires. Color grading was led by Gustavo Biazzi, under the consultation of cinematographer Bárbara Álvarez; digital image restoration by Margarita Moscoso; sound work by Federico Esquerro; and mastering by Julián Giulianelli. The project was coordinated by Fernando Madedo, and the entire process was supervised by director Lucrecia Martel.

Selections include Dylan’s first film soundtrack for 1961’s “Autopsy on Operation Abolition;” a devastating solo rendition of “Ballad of Hollis Brown” from the 1963 TV special “Folk Songs and More Folk Songs;” a rollicking 1976 take on “I Pity the Poor Immigrant” with Joan Baez; a gospel-infused “Blowin’ in the Wind;” an apocalyptically rocking “When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky” with Dylan backed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers; loving tributes to Johnny Cash and Tony Bennett; a glimpse into the Archive’s film restoration project with never-before-seen footage of “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” from 1966; and many
