THE LAST LETTER (LA DERNIÈRE LETTRE) is based on a chapter of Vasily Grossman’s novel *Life and Fate*. It is 1941. A Ukrainian ghetto has fallen to the Nazis and all of its Jewish residents are slated to be murdered. In the midst of the impending horror, the town’s physician, a woman named Anna Semionova, dictates one final letter to her son, who is safe outside of enemy lines. The letter, with its detailed observations of daily life in a ghetto, reveals the fear, courage, frailty, compassion and dignity of this woman as she reviews her life and faces her death.

**EZTV SudZall Does it All! 45th Anniversary Screening!**

In 1979, a frustrated aspiring filmmaker named John Dorr used a borrowed black-and-white security camera and Betamax VCR to make his first feature, _SudZall Does It All!_, for the low, low cost of $10. Originally written as a play, _SudZall_ tells the story of Cordelia Coventry, an actress whose appearance in a series of laundry detergent commercials brings her fame and fortune as “America’s favorite housewife.” Can her cynical, but idealist director truly transcend the banalities of American popular culture? And what part does the Hillside Homo Hacker play in making Cordelia aware of the strange contusions that mediate between art and reality?



Join us as we celebrate the 45th anniversary of the first public screening of _SudZall Does It All!_, which took place at the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art on March 28th, 1980. This program will also feature the concluding episode of Ken Camp’s wicked gay soap opera satire _As the World Burns_ and some other surprises. Lesbian Erotic Video
Founded by On Our Backs magazine founders Nan Kinney and Deborah Sundahl at the height of the lesbian sex wars of the 80s, Fatale Video was one of, if not the very first companies dedicated to making erotic videos by and for lesbians. When a program featuring Fatale’s first two shorts—Private Pleasures and Shadows—caused a riot (!) at the 1985 San Francisco Lesbian & Gay Video Festival, festival programmer and EZTV associate John Canaly decided to bring them to the Video Gallery at the end of September 1985. This kind of programming would eventually lead to some of the more high-minded critics and video artists of the era to give the space the dismissive (and perhaps a bit homophobic) nickname, SleazyTV.

Drawing on the illustrious history of the great panorama paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries, The Velaslavasay Panorama is an exhibition hall, theatre and garden dedicated to the production and presentation of unusual visual experiences, including those of the 360-degree variety and linear moving panoramas.  The Velaslavasay Panorama panoramic exhibition encircles the spectator within a fully enveloping atmosphere; a vast painting of a continuous surrounding landscape, accompanied by sound stimulation and three-dimensional elements, affords the viewer an opportunity to experience a complete sensory phenomenon.

Historically, the panorama was an immersive 360-degree painted environment, often including a three-dimensional faux terrain in the foreground of the painting to enhance the illusion of depth and simulated reality.  An early ancestor of the motion picture, the captivated public would visit these paintings-in-the-round as an entertainment or novelty, much along the same lines as the cinema is seen today. 

Located in University Park in the West Adams Historic District, The Velaslavasay Panorama presents to the community an art form that has been nearly lost due to the technological advancements of our time and the multitudinous variety of ways in which the public consumes mass entertainment.

In addition to serving as a showcase for panoramic works and living garden wonders, The Velaslavasay Panorama also hosts events. The Panorama's past events include illustrated lectures on a variety of artistic and scientific subjects; film screenings; and presentations that vary from toy theatre productions and silent film programs to crafting meetings and other experimentations. 

Devoted to the continued production of things reminiscent of this landmark era in media history, The Velaslavasay Panorama is proud to participate in the cultural and artistic identity of the great city of Los Angeles,  known the world over as an entertainment capital and the center of magnetic showmanship and spectacle.

In this one-night-only event, join us as we transport you to a hypothetical evening at West Hollywood’s EZTV Video Gallery. Structured as two distinct blocks, this program features a mix of rarities and oddities both from EZTV and its sibling organization—the Washington, DC-based Video Free Earth—commemorating the community-oriented and, by and large radically queer video produced autonomously by both organizations at the height of the Reagan era.

The EZTV block features selections from its in-house videomagazine EZTV Eye; the re-premiere of Vertical Blanking’s collaboration with Beth Lapides, _Deep Thought_ (1990); and an assortment of long-unscreened videos (including _Conan The Waitress_, _Musta Been The Mustache_, and _Do It Yourself For Poets_) that show the range of the West Hollywood scene’s campy, transgressive, strange, inspiring, and beautiful DIY creativity.

On the other coast, videomakers (and federal workers) Jamie Walters and Leonard Braverman collaborated with poets, performers, and activists like Chasen Gaver, Jack Guidone, and Isabel-Lee Malone on a series of wickedly satirical and thought-provoking videos like _A Kennedy Trilogy_ (imagining a future in which Ted Kennedy was elected President) and _Louise Nevelson Takes a Bath_ (featuring the post-modernist sculptress as a “droll transvestite”).

Opened in 1983, the EZTV Video Gallery was a production studio and one of the world’s first video microcinemas. Home to some of LA’s most adventurous programming, a typical night at the theater might include a mix of video art, low-budget horror, political documentaries, queer video, and performance art of every kind. In this program, you’ll see a little bit of all of the above, plus long-unseen interstitials from the EZTV archives for what is sure to be a night at the movies unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before—unless you were there, which you probably weren’t.

One of the most significant films of the Indian Parallel cinema movement, Maya Darpan focuses on Taran (Aditi), who lives with her father in a small town on the cusp of industrialization. Taran has a strained relationship with her father, who is increasingly bitter as he is unable to find a suitable match for his daughter. The young woman finds solace in her interactions with an engineer, and claims her freedom by becoming his lover. The film was considered a breakthrough in cinematic language, as director Kumar Shahani adopted a painterly approach that moved away from a linear narrative using color, movement, and sound to represent Taran’s isolation and the conflict between the individual and society. In 1980, two biographies cross paths in a Paris cinema: those of young cinema-goer Alexander Horwath and the actor Henry Fonda. Horwath recognised early on that the popular view of Fonda as a “typical American” and the “conscience of the USA” in his acting roles doesn’t paint the full picture. It is the more convoluted paths of Fonda’s biography and how he played roles and embodied attitudes extending beyond individual characters that truly interest Horwath.

Thrillingly edited with Michael Palm—and with research and artistic advisement by Horwath's partner Regina Schlagnitweit—his essay film follows them across the history of film into an imaginary republic of places, times, characters: “The United States of Fonda”. Fonda becomes the link between an old and a new America, the thoughtful face of the alleged transition from the law of the jungle to civilisation as well as a critic of an American self-image that only serves itself. Paradoxically, it’s the magic of cinema invoked in the film that contributes to this (self-)disenchantment of America via its own specific techniques and the help of one of its greatest magicians. And in doing so creates a wonderfully complex cinematic memorial to both the USA and storyteller and actor Fonda—the president that never was.

Initially, &#8220;Mulholland Dr.&#8221; was to mark David Lynch&#8217;s return to television. It is a retooling of a script originally shot as a 94-minute pilot for a TV series (co-written with TV screenwriter Joyce Eliason) for the channel ABC, which had approved the script, but chose not even to air the pilot once it was done in 1999, despite Lynch&#8217;s labours to cut the project to their liking. It was left in limbo until 18 month later French company Studio Canal Plus (also producer of &#8216;The Straight Story&#8217;) agreed to pay ABC $7 million for the pilot, and budget a few million more to turn the pilot into a two-hour, 27-minute movie. The cost of the film doubled to $14 million as sets had to be reconstructed and actors recalled.

A personal essay about the United States, viewed through the life and work of a movie actor. Henry Fonda and the roles he played merge into a dazzling and conflicted figure. A very private man who thought he had “no good answers to anything” becomes the unlikely motor of a parallel history.

His voice, recorded during his last interview in 1981, and his onscreen avatars guide us through America’s past and present -on a road trip from the village of Fonda, NY, across the Midwest to the Pacific; from 1651 to the 1980s and the presidency of another movie actor. It takes many places and times and characters to imagine an invisible republic -the United States of Fonda.
