Spellbound

When Hitchcock's REBECCA won Best Picture in ’41, he also had another film in contention: FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT. Expertly paced, it finds Hitchcock honing the formula of a breathless chase across multiple locations, even sketching out ideas later to appear in NORTH BY NORTHWEST.

The impulsive slugging of a cop by reporter John Jones (Joel McCrea) gets the attention of his editor, who seeks a scribe to cover Europe’s unstable situation without the biased tone of a foreign correspondent. Things get sinister when Jones’ first interview subject, a Dutch diplomat, is assassinated in a spectacularly Hitchcockian sequence involving a gazillion umbrellas. From there, Jones is embroiled in a deadly plot to undermine the stability of the Western world.

A flawless example of a classic Hollywood thriller with perfect balance between comedy, tension and visual ingenuity. The film is also a harbinger of things to come from the director, who also dabbled in war-themed shorts and chronicled WWII’s evolution in SABOTEUR and LIFEBOAT, followed by a perverse look at its aftermath in NOTORIOUS.

The World*, Wright&#8217;s beloved cult classic, follows the titular Toronto slacker and indie rocker (Michael Cera) overcoming his beloved Ramona Flowers&#8217; seven evil exes and learning some self-respect in the process. Not only is Wright&#8217;s adaptation one of the best comic book movies ever, it&#8217;s one of the best video game movies, aping the structure of a sidescroller to give this wildly inventive comedy some 8-bit flair. Try not to fill up on garlic bread because movies as special as *Scott Pilgrim*only come around so often.

Bill Lee (Peter Weller) is an exterminator with a penchant for ingesting pesticides. While hallucinating, Bill begins to take orders from a giant beetle that commands him to kill his wife and flee into the Interzone. As the summer before their 16th birthdays approaches, these four best friends with diverse family backgrounds and personalities hatch a plan to stay connected despite being separated for the entire season. The girls pass around a pair of secondhand jeans that, magically, look wonderful on all of them despite their different sizes, with each teen keeping the pants for two weeks. Over the summer, the pants come to represent the girls’ mutual support of one another. But the jeans also lead each teenager into bruising yet ultimately healing confrontations with love and courage, death and forgiveness, in the days of THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS. Based on the original comic by Monkey Punch, when a perfectly-executed casino heist turns up fake dough, the grandson of the great gentleman thief and his oddball crew of thieves head to the tiny country of Cagliostro, the source of the funky bills. There, they become embroiled in intrigue involving a forced marriage and the country’s fabled treasure. But to pull off this job perfectly, Lupin III will need help from his nemesis, Inspector Zenigata! The first feature from Hayao Miyazaki is a showcase for the talent to come out of Studio Ghibli.

Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro

One of Alfred Hitchcock's most chilling films, Shadow of a Doubt, was considered a personal favorite by the director himself. After her charming Uncle Charlie (Joseph Cotton) comes to visit in the sleepy town of Santa Rosa, his favorite niece and namesake, "Young Charlie" (Teresa Wright), begins to suspect him of being the infamous Merry Widow murderer. As she draws closer to the truth, a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse begins, leading to a shocking climax in this riveting psychological thriller from the Master of Suspense.

Shadow of a Doubt

Alfred Hitchcock's exciting 1942 wartime thriller stars Robert Cummings as a Los Angeles aircraft factory worker who witnesses his plant's firebombing by a Nazi agent. During the deadly explosion, Cumming's best friend is killed and he, himself, is wrongly accused of sabotage. To clear his name, Cummings begins a relentless cross-country chase that takes him from Boulder Dam to New York's Radio City Music Hall, and finally, to a harrowing confrontation atop the Statue of Liberty. Hitchcock's first film with an all-American cast moves with breakneck speed towards its spine-tingling climax to create a riveting masterpiece of suspense.

Saboteur

From 1979–1984, JEB performed \*The Dyke Show\* more than 80 times to packed audiences at community spaces and universities across the US and Canada. Originally titled \*Lesbian Images in Photography: 1850–1984\*, the pioneering show includes portraits, documentary, and erotic images by historic and contemporary photographers ranging from Alice Austen and Berenice Abbott to Tee Corinne and Leigh Mosley. JEB’s accompanying narration is a unique fusion of art history, activist inspiration, and stand-up comedy.  
Following the screening of \*The Dyke Show\* (pre-recorded in 2023), photographer Amina Cruz will join JEB on stage for a talkback and Q&A.

### **ABOUT THE FILM:**

Directed by Otto Preminger and penned by Elaine May with an assist from Joan Didion and others, this barbed black comedy features Golden Globe nominated Dyan Cannon as the busy housewife Julie Messinger, whose only gripe about her art-director husband, Richard (Laurence Luckinbill) is that he’s a little selfish and too committed to his job. It’s not until a routine operation gone awry leaves him in a coma that Julie learns his secrets. Richard had been carrying on numerous affairs, some of them with Julie’s close friends. Stunned at how naïve she’s been, Julie works through her pain by way of a lot of drinking and a few torrid affairs of her own. Complete with turns from James Coco, Louise Lasser and a memorable scene with Burgess Meredith.

The camera lens and celluloid hold the transformative power to take the visceral human body and turn it into a thing of poetic and ethereal beauty &#8211; this exquisite program of rarities from the 1930s- 1960s will open your eyes to the endless possibilities for beauty in the synthesis between film and the human form. Featuring visionary work by **Norman McLaren**, legendary modern dance diva **Martha Graham** in *A Dancer&#8217;s World*, a mind-blowing musical number from surreal choreographer **Busby Berkeley***, and the breathtaking and scandalously queer ***Lot in Sodom**.* Plus, **Sally Rand&#8217;s** infamous burlesque number *Bubble Dance*, high-flying diving cuties from a 1940s newsreel, and more low-gauge corporeal fun. *Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted* is a wildly entertaining and fittingly unconventional documentary about convention-defying singer, songwriter and record producer Jerry Williams, aka Swamp Dogg, one of the great cult figures of 20th-century American music whose singular voice and ideas have shaped the history not merely of soul music, but of country, hip-hop and a dozen other genres. In the film, the titular artist and his &#8220;bachelor pad of aging musicians&#8221;, including the charming Guitar Shorty and lovably quirky Moogstar, navigate the tumultuous music industry, transform their home into an artistic playground and invite fellow musicians like Jenny Lewis and John Prine and superfans Mike Judge, Johnny Knoxville and Tom Kenny to play in their unique musical sandbox&#8230; and paint Swamp Dogg&#8217;s pool. One Crazy Summer

Lightstruck presents a 3-program tribute to Gene Youngblood’s 1970 book Expanded Cinema!

Program 2: Cosmic Consciousness & Cybernetic Cinema

In our second program focusing on Gene Youngblood’s 1970 book Expanded Cinema, Lightstruck will focus on artists who – through their visionary use of incredible machines both homemade and hi-tech – produced works that sought to extend and externalize human consciousness in a cinematic form uniting mind, heart, spirit, and soul. Youngblood was fascinated by the ambitious and artful employment of technology in motion pictures in the 1960s, and saw both the humble DIY innovations and the massive mainframes alike as potential conduits for enhanced human engagement, and an evolutionary stepping-stone for multi-sensorial exploration.

Trailblazing and wildly diverse computer animations by Stan VanDerBeek and Lillian Schwartz (each working with pioneer Ken Knowlton), as well as John Whitney and Michael Whitney, will establish the radical abstraction origins of the computer arts. In the analog domain, James Whitney’s rapturous masterpiece Lapis and three unparalleled films by Jordan Belson will make perhaps the most convincing possible argument for cinema as a vehicle for contemplative transcendence. The evening will conclude with what we believe to be the first 16mm performance of John Whitney Jr.’s legendary three-screen film, Side Phase Drift, in over 50 years, with John Jr. himself operating the center projector. This will definitely be a very special show not to be missed!

Turnstile: Never Enough is a forthcoming visual album by the American hardcore punk band Turnstile. This 60-minute film that serves as a companion piece to their upcoming fourth studio album, Never Enough, which is scheduled for release on June 6, 2025, via Roadrunner Records. The film is set to premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Festival. Directed by Turnstile&#8217;s frontman Brendan Yates and guitarist Pat McCrory, the visual album encompasses all 14 tracks from Never Enough. It aims to capture the band&#8217;s raw energy through striking cinematography and sound. The project marks the band&#8217;s first release featuring guitarist Meg Mills, who joined following the departure of founding member Brady Ebert in 2022. The film includes the title track &#8220;Never Enough,&#8221; as well as singles like &#8220;Seein’ Stars&#8221; and &#8220;Birds,&#8221; the latter featuring vocals by Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Blood Orange’s Devonté Hynes. These tracks have accompanying music videos directed by Yates and McCrory, which are expected to be part of the visual album.

“Think of the children!” wail the people whose real agenda is to erase transgender kids rather than protect them. One such child is Ludo (Georges Du Fresne) who absolutely and completely understands that she is a girl, no matter what it says on her birth certificate. Ludo’s unquestioning and unwavering commitment to her girlhood makes waves among her family’s closed-minded new neighbors, and even Ludo’s parents have a hard time coming to terms with their child’s gender identity.

Director and co-writer Alain Berliner skillfully captures the reality of the suburban bourgeoisie, as well as the cotton-candy fantasies where Ludo can be herself in the company of a Barbie-like doll named Pam, in a gently moving story of parents learning that truly loving their child means truly understanding her. (And this non-didactic movie is for families, by the way, despite the MPAA’s bizarre and probably transphobic decision to slap this lovely film with an R rating.)
