Join us for a screening of *The Watermelon Woman* (Cheryl Dunye, 1996, 84 minutes). Supported by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and written, directed and edited by Dunye, this romantic comedy explores long-standing constructions of race and sexuality on-screen. Dunye stars as a documentary filmmaker trying to identify an unnamed actress who plays a stereotypical “mammy” character in a 1930s plantation drama, a role that many Black actresses in Hollywood were relegated to at the time. Banks and John Earl Jelks play Malindy and Arthur, a couple in 1910 Chicago, as well as Malaika and Nico, a couple living in the same city almost eighty years later. Their stories are deftly interwoven through the creative use of archival photography, an original score featuring ragtime and African percussion, and an editing style both lyrical and tender. Malindy, an industrious, intelligent dressmaker, falls for Arthur, an illiterate migrant from Mississippi, along the shore of Lake Michigan. "**2002** is a "concert film" that collects together footage of approximately forty bands videotaped by artist C. Spencer Yeh during the year 2002, including Deerhoof, Animal Collective, Sightings, Sudden Infant, Cock ESP, Double Leopards, Caroliner Rainbow, Comets on Fire, and more. Acting as a survey, tribute, and foreshadowing of the contemporary American musical underground, 2002 captures not only the artists, but the audiences, spaces, and networks that remain incredibly formative and influential over a decade later.

A handful of the segments were originally posted to Yeh’s personal website, before the coming of YouTube and other media-sharing outlets. The average duration of the edits were kept short due to the storage and bandwidth considerations of that time – a strategy carried over in revisiting the footage years later. In a style similar to Yeh's *Hair Police: 01-02*, the accustomed musical documentary talking heads, voiceover meditations, and evocative b-roll were eschewed in favor of a more observational "vérité" approach. A loose narrative was already found in the sequencing of these short glimpses during the span of a year – audience members one moment are then found to be the artists on stage in the next. Some venues iconic in their moment are now long gone, while others were revived in recent times, activating a new history.

In 1924, newly formed Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer staked its claim as a major Hollywood studio with HE WHO GETS SLAPPED, a film as bold and haunting as anything produced in the silent era. Lon Chaney delivers one of his most devastating performances as Beaumont, a scientist betrayed by his wife and patron, who flees his ruined life to become a circus clown whose only act is to be slapped—over and over—for the audience’s amusement.  Director Victor Sjöström, already a legend of Swedish cinema, was hired to co-adapt (with Carey Wilson) Russian playwright Leonid Andreyev’s dark, psychologically charged stage work for the film. Sjöström’s other major works include THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE (1921), THE SCARLETT LETTER (1926) and THE WIND (1928), and stars as the lead character in Ingmar Bergman’s WILD STRAWBERRIES (1957). A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE is the story of David (Haley Joel Osment), the first mecha (a futuristic term for a mechanized human being) designed with the ability to love. A couple whose son is in a coma “adopts” David to help them recover from their loss. Naturally, things do not go as planned, and David is forced to leave the mother (Frances O’Connor) he’s been “imprinted” to love, and make his way in the world. Traveling with Teddy, a hi-tech stuffed bear, David escapes the Flesh Fair, where angry humans destroy mechas to “purge artificiality,” and unexpectedly befriends Gigolo Joe (Jude Law), a robot designed to pleasure women. Joe agrees to help David in his quest to become human.

Presented by Topcat Management and co-presented by sogbots and the American Cinematheque, LA’s Rich and Successful Film Festival (RSFF) is the fourth annual curated presentation of short films from the next generation of filmmakers. RSFF is a non-competitive space by and for LA-based filmmakers to introduce their work to new audiences, connect with industry mainstays, and shake hands with future collaborators. The lineup includes 13 short films across genres, all helmed by LA-based filmmakers.

This year’s festival is curated by a unique jury comprising alumni filmmakers, junior executives, and seasoned programmers.
