**Jimi Plays Monterey** (1987, 50 min)

Jimi Hendrix&#8217;s debut American set at 1967&#8217;s Monterey Pop Festival is generally considered one of the most radical and legendary live shows ever. Virtually unknown to American audiences at the time, even though he was already an established entity in the UK, Hendrix and his two-piece Experience explode on stage, ripping through blues classics &#8220;Rock Me Baby&#8221; and Howlin&#8217; Wolf&#8217;s &#8220;Killing Floor,&#8221; interpreting and electrifying Bob Dylan&#8217;s &#8220;Like a Rolling Stone,&#8221; debuting songs from his yet-to-be-released first album and closing with the now historic sacrificing/burning of his guitar during an unhinged version of &#8220;Wild Thing&#8221; that even its writer Chip Taylor would never have imagined. Hendrix uses feedback and distortion to enhance the songs in whisper-to-scream intensity, blazing territory that had not been previously explored with as much soul-frazzled power.

**Shake! Otis at Monterey** (1987, 20min)

Renowned documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker captures Otis Redding in his ascendancy, singing at the historic Monterey International Pop Festival in June 1967. Comedian Tom Smothers introduces Redding to a crowd that is leaving &#8212; until Redding grabs them with his charged rendition of &#8220;Shake.&#8221; Redding&#8217;s performance also includes &#8220;Respect&#8221; (which he wrote), &#8220;I&#8217;ve Been Loving You Too Long,&#8221; &#8220;Satisfaction,&#8221; and &#8220;Try a Little Tenderness.&#8221; Tragically, Redding died in a plane crash six months later. An innovative filmmaker who started in the 1950s making experimental films, Pennebaker garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature in 1993 for The War Room, his behind-the-scenes look at Bill Clinton&#8217;s 1992 campaign. His other subjects have included Norman Mailer, Bob Dylan, and David Bowie.

Initially, &#8220;Mulholland Dr.&#8221; was to mark David Lynch&#8217;s return to television. It is a retooling of a script originally shot as a 94-minute pilot for a TV series (co-written with TV screenwriter Joyce Eliason) for the channel ABC, which had approved the script, but chose not even to air the pilot once it was done in 1999, despite Lynch&#8217;s labours to cut the project to their liking. It was left in limbo until 18 month later French company Studio Canal Plus (also producer of &#8216;The Straight Story&#8217;) agreed to pay ABC $7 million for the pilot, and budget a few million more to turn the pilot into a two-hour, 27-minute movie. The cost of the film doubled to $14 million as sets had to be reconstructed and actors recalled.

*How To Have an American Baby* is a kaleidoscopic voyage into the shadow economy that caters to Chinese tourists who travel to the U.S. on “birthing vacations”—in order to obtain U.S. citizenship for their babies. Tracing the underground birth tourism industry from Beijing to Los Angeles, the film weaves together vignettes and deeply private moments. Inside bedrooms, delivery rooms, and family meetings, the story of a hidden global economy emerges—depicting the aspirations and anxieties, fortunes and tragedies that befall the ordinary people caught in the web of its influence.

More timely than ever, given the current administration’s attacks on the 14th Amendment and birthright citizenship, Tai’s film provides an intimate and nuanced look at some of the people actually affected. Filmed largely in the San Gabriel Valley and China, the film’s sensitive eye confronts us with the difficult choices, high personal and monetary costs, and fraught exchanges faced by these women, complicating our understanding of the socio-economic and legal issues surrounding “birthing vacations” and the desire for American citizenship.

**Leslie Tai** is a Chinese-American filmmaker from San Francisco whose work chronicles the dreams, anxieties, and consumer desire of China’s rising middle class and the Chinese diaspora through a distinctly female lens.

Mesoamerican artists held a cosmic responsibility: as they adorned the surfaces of buildings, clay vessels, textiles, bark-paper pages, and sculptures with color, they (quite literally) made the world. The power of color emerged from the materiality of its pigments, the skilled hands that crafted it, and the communities whose knowledge imbued it with meaning. Color mapped the very order of the cosmos, of time and space. By engineering and deploying color, artists wielded the power of cosmic creation in their hands. *We Live in Painting: The Nature of Color in Mesoamerican Art* explores the science, art, and cosmology of color in Mesoamerica. Histories of colonialism and industrialization in the “color-averse” West have minimized the deep significance of color in the Indigenous Americas. This exhibition follows two interconnected lines of inquiry—technical and material analyses, and Indigenous conceptions of art and image—to reach the full richness of color at the core of Mesoamerican worldviews.

Mesoamerican artists held a cosmic responsibility: as they adorned the surfaces of buildings, clay vessels, textiles, bark-paper pages, and sculptures with color, they (quite literally) made the world. The power of color emerged from the materiality of its pigments, the skilled hands that crafted it, and the communities whose knowledge imbued it with meaning. Color mapped the very order of the cosmos, of time and space. By engineering and deploying color, artists wielded the power of cosmic creation in their hands. *We Live in Painting: The Nature of Color in Mesoamerican Art* explores the science, art, and cosmology of color in Mesoamerica. Histories of colonialism and industrialization in the “color-averse” West have minimized the deep significance of color in the Indigenous Americas. This exhibition follows two interconnected lines of inquiry—technical and material analyses, and Indigenous conceptions of art and image—to reach the full richness of color at the core of Mesoamerican worldviews.

What does plastic surgery look like in a time before plastic? In order to help facilitate this, we offer a unique program entitled **16mm Brain Food**, for which we have catered an all-16mm meal of generous portions and incomparable flavors.

Spanning a 90-minute selection of eleven films chosen for their salutary and mind-expanding qualities, 16mm Brain Food includes errant eyeballs, psy-fi animations, fragmented dancescapes, flickering abstractions, secret language rebuses, illusionary kinetic sculptures, hand-drawn hypervirtuosities, DIY lenscraft, optical surprises, undisciplined slime molds, and the Capitol Records building launching a rocket into space.
